[LFP] OSR Weird West Game (Waitlist)

#1 Post by Norjax »

I’m seeking 4-6 players for a game genre I’ve never played or run: Weird Western.

The game mechanics will be either 1e/OSRIC or 3e/OGL, depending on the player’s preference, with some custom bolt-on mechanics (concerning firearms). Humans only and generated as the following classes: Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Thief and Magic-user. These classes are then ported to Mystic, Gunslinger, Ranger, Swindler and Alchemist, respectively.

The setting, as outlined in the most popular paper on the frontier:

Lore of the Plains

WEST HAMBURG, July 7, 1869 – HISTORY AND REMEMBRANCE

On this day marking the Founding of the Federation, we reflect on the remarkable history of our Great Nation. In 1352, Murhic sailors from Northwest Africa, descendants of the Phoenicians, discovered this untamed and seemingly uninhabited continent. They named it Atlantica and established the port city of Tangier-Tequan.

Image

Shortly thereafter, the Holy Roman Empire expanded across the Atlantic, establishing its colonial sphere, followed by other Europan and African powers. The wild continent was home to large and dangerous megafauna, descendants of Ice Age beasts. In the northern interior, a lost colony of Vikings, who had migrated from the Isle of Greenland, evolved into several nomadic tribal groups collectively known as the Horse Norse.

The landscape of Atlantica is shrouded in an enduring mystery. Megalithic ruins, remnants of a pre-human civilization that once thrived here, are scattered across the land. Whispered rumors persist that these ancient beings, dubbed “Trogs,” may still inhabit remote areas and deep subterranean caverns. Hauntings and supernatural events add to the mystique of the Wild Frontier.

Image

Conflict over territorial boundaries eventually escalated into the Eight Winters War, with battles raging on both sides of the Atlantic. The war culminated in the defeat of the Holy Roman Empire by a coalition of Angland, Frankland, and Iberia. Although the Anglish Empire was granted the position of Viceroy over the land, it was too weakened and economically drained to govern them effectively from Europa. As a result, the Treaty of Cologne was negotiated, establishing a self-governing nation formed from the various colonial holdings: the United Federation of States and Territories.

Image

Today, the United Federation of States and Territories (UFST) is gradually recovering from the devastation of the Eight Winters War. Former Coalition troops now form the backbone of the new Federation Army, with their distinctive maroon uniforms serving as both a symbol of authority and a reminder of the Coalition's victory.

The Prussians of the Holy Roman Empire, the defeated belligerents, remain resilient within their cultural zone. Though anglicized and under the watchful presence of Coalition regiments, their pride endures. However, many German colonials, scorned and blamed for the war, have joined the latest waves of migration, heading westward into the vast, open frontier on both sides of the Barbarossa Mountains.

This is the background for Weird West adventuring.

In summary: An alternate United States on a parallel Earth set during the late 1800’s, replete with ancient ruins, supernatural disturbances, dangerous megafauna, and heterodox nomadic tribes.

Feel free to ask any questions. I look forward to new adventures. :)

Sounds interesting.

I read some of the Deadlands Reloaded 'Weird West' which was played using the savage world rules.

I might have to look at the rules you want to use but roleplaying a gunslinging mage might be interesting.

I am interested. Very familiar with 1e but no experience with 3e. I have played deadlands on here once as well. If in my vote would be for 1e.

Depending on your posting rate, I may be interested. I've been in a few short-lived "western" games, which fizzled away rather quickly. I'm for 1E/Osric, but I can see how 3e may be interesting with all of the skills and feats.

intriguing.

3e does have firearm rules

sounds like opportunity for dissidents to rise up, maybe form 'outlaw gangs' to terrorize western expansion colonists :o :D

I have only read and heard good things of Norjax's DCC/MCC Gam'A Zone game which should speak volumes about creativity and player immersion.

I played 3.5ed (D&D) which I think was one of my favourite systems but 1e is fine.

How 'western' should we think? Poker playing hucksters, cattle driving cowboys, wagon train guards on the pioneer trails?.

So doesn't 1e. The 1e DMG has firearm rules and Dragon Magazine issue #70 has more detailed rules as well. Both work just fine.

The 1e/3e choice is so the players don’t have to lean an entirely new rule set. Primarily character creation (before porting), ascending or descending Armor Class, and the Saving Throws mechanics. I didn’t really consider the skills and feats system.

The firearm mechanic involves the Advantage rolling system. Since firearms have such a high velocity, their chance to hit is greater. By rolling two d20 attack dice and using the higher of the two rolls, the likelihood of a hit increases.

Posting rate would be 2-3 time/week for players. The GM may post more in response to player actions.

The intent is a short, one-off adventure that could continue into a campaign if there is interest.

One idea for an adventure is based on the movie Open Range, where the free grazers are less benign. The desperate migrants are imposing themselves on other people’s property.

Thank you for the kind words. :)

The first adventure involves investigating the disappearance of a mining crew up in the foothills of the Barbarossa Mountains (west of the Rangemark Territory on the map). You’ll start in a frontier mining town.

I see you have 6 interested already so I will gladly wait on a waitlist but I love this genre. Either rule mechanic is fine with me as I have played both as well as Deadlands (d20, classic, and savage but not GURPS). I even kickstarted with Modern Necessities for OSE just to get his weird west rules. :mrgreen:

I'll get the character creation rules up tonight. Start thinking what character class you want to play:

Cleric = Mystic
Fighter = Gunslinger
Ranger = Ranger
Thief = Swindler
Magic-user = Alchemist
