0006 Rumbles on Rangent
0006 Rumbles on Rangent
The clock counts down and 18 seconds prior to the expected emergence time, the crew begins to feel the twisting in their minds that always occurs at transition...normal...but not pleasant. There is the quick flash and the viewscreens change from blank to starfilled and the sensors and comm flood with data.
Flighty notes all systems on the Bridge are A-OK. He switches over from Jump Mode to System Mode with software changes and then brings up Library Data on his screen. "E 6 7 A 6 1 2 – 7" is what he gets. This is for the big moon around the inner gas giant, though. Nothing about the belters officially.
Donovan quickly scrolls through the sensor and comm data. There are no bogies nearby and he quickly locates 3 big nodes where comm traffic is centered. One is further in close to the K8 V Orange Dwarf star, specifically from around a big gas giant orbiting it. The second and third are just in and just out from where your ship emerged. One is from an area near a second gas giant and the other is trailing it near a large asteroid. There really isn't "a belt" in this system after all. There are a bunch of moons orbiting a gas giant planet and asteroids trailing behind it like a long tail. The "belter" society must occupy this area around and trailing the second gas giant. There is a third gas giant about 80 million km further out but it is dark on radio and sensor frequencies. Donovan quickly picks up a broadcast message coming from the inner world requesting all entering ships to turn on their transponders, but it appears to be a general repeating message rather than one aimed at The New Chance.
Sigrun at the controls for the turrets sweeps the skies for nearby dangers. None are showing on her screens. There are 4 moving transponders in near the inner gas giant, but that's 30 million km away. There are 12 moving transponders in the general area where you are, none are vectoring toward you though, and none closer than 800,000 km away. She picks up nothing from further out in the system around the third gas giant. This is all based on radio and transponders. She hasn't done any passive (won't give your position away) or active (will light up your position) radar sweeps yet.
Doug reports all Engineering systems are "Nominal", then adds, "But Bob's had a reaction to re-entry and needs to lie down for a bit."
Zaki and Karcsi quickly recovered from the gut and mind twisting of emergence and are doing just fine back in the crew commons area.

"Copy that."
Flighty kills the connection. "I hate being suspicious, but we never found the saboteur, if there really is one. Donovan, make sure the comm cannot send any signals, but that it makes sure to capture any attempted transmissions."
OOC: Eris, we had asked earlier about what the transmission that the avionics package tried to send, and Donovan was going to report on it. That must've fallen off your radar. Can we get an update on that so we can have done something about it during jump?
"Sigrun, I'm going to send Zaki to check on Bob and then Doug, but I wouldn't mind if you were somewhere close by, just in case. I don't want to assume guilt, but if he is dirty and makes a move, I don't want Zaki hurt or him spooked if he doesn't do anything."
Flighty will open a channel to the common area. "Zaki, Bob said he felt off after jump and wants to lie down. Could you give him a minute or two to get settled and go check on him? I'm sending Sigrun your way in case extra help is needed. Just to be thorough, check on Doug, too."

"Skippare. Gunnery reporting: scopes clear of immediate threats, batteries standing down. TAR not activated. Tactical: recommend Search Radar staying dark while we gather more ELINT and in system chatter".
As the jump clock counted down the "girly" pony tailed Sigrún became ever more less visible. Then with a day to go she braided her hair close across her temples and constantly wore her tactical rig in crew spaces. She became more taciturn, less polite, ever more brooding and seemed to exude restrained aggression.
Barging through the crew commons she calls to Zaki as she catches up "Come on hurry up - we are off to Engineering. I am... ah... your acolyte... assistant... nurse, já?"

"Já Foringi!" Sigrún locked her Gunnery station and stood to don the new plate carrier over her tac vest (and its three handguns). She reached down and her hand effortlessly found the grip of "Úlfs sára". She hefted the boarding axe over her shoulder and she smiled "Framt!"terrymixon wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2024 10:35 pm "Sigrun, I'm going to send Zaki to check on Bob and then Doug, but I wouldn't mind if you were somewhere close by, just in case. "Bodyguard, more like," Zaki says with a theatrical eye roll. She punches the door release for the cargo bay passage and steps through.

Re: 0006 Rumbles on Rangent
Sigrún's smile shows her sharp white teeth "Not if you let me have one of your blóðkross patches - then I am "Medic!"* nei?"
* Having apparently learned the word... somewhere... Sigrún's pronunciation is definitively "Imperial" but her copied delivery carries with it a desperate imperative...
Presuming "talk through" is (selectively but generally) "on" on our radio net (for increased crew safety) Sigrún comms Karcsi "Hæ, warrior. I'm walking the cargo making sure nothing's shifted during transition. Come through I could use extra eyes".

Donovan nods to flighty. "Checking the the communications system now. I will also go on passive scanning while we coast to get a long baseline." He checks the transponder and communications systems to make sure nothing is out bound. After that is done he will set up the passive sensors.terrymixon wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2024 10:35 pm

"Bridge copy, going with Sigrún."
Karcsi Follows
Sigrún said she had her pistols, were we issued weapons again?

Only Sigrun can say. She still has the keys to the ship’s locker.
Re: 0006 Rumbles on Rangent
As Karcsi enters the cargo bay behind her and Zaki Sigrún whistles to get his attention and then comms "I think you'll find that there's something loose atop that orange crate. Check it out".terrymixon wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 2:25 amOnly Sigrun can say. She still has the keys to the ship’s locker.
With his great strength Karcsi will easily be able to access the orange container's top where he finds a ship issue rifle within easy reach. The weapon has a fully charged magazine and is safed. Sigrún then gives the military hand signal for "advance" in the direction of Engineering adding her own gentle motion of her hand held palm down for "slowly". She then comms "Looks like you fixed it. Karcsi, I think that if I ever need a hand you are a useful man to have around". She then waves him on before following Zaki towards Engineering.

Re: 0006 Rumbles on Rangent
Sigrún replies "Sword World women are more passive yet stoic and strong while their men are warriors fighting for honour against their inevitable fate. There is a good holo about a lawman on a mining station who must fight alone against a gang of villains as his honour demands. He stashed weapons about the place to help in his fight - that's where I got the idea. I think it's called "Outworld" but I might be somehow confusing myself as to the title... *"

"Sword Worlders often trust their own judgement and you I've looked in the eye over blades - I don't think you are the saboteur". She adds with a reckless smile "Even if you are I think that you have too much honour to shoot me in the back. That and I think for the moment the All Father finds me "interesting" and so I have a different fate".
She follows Zaki towards Engineering.
(OOC: * From memory the rather good "High Noon in Space" starring Sean Connery and, of course, it's Outland.
Apology for liberties taken with artistic licence in stashing the rifle but as "Ship's Troops" (and since she has the Armoury keys

No stray signals going out. The Transponder, doesn't try to come on automatically. You've dealt with that, and nothing is trying to send over the radio transmitters. You think you should be able to use them, now, without fear they are compromising you.

Transponder is silent and waiting to be switched on. The sensor and comm systems are on line and data comes in from both, but the transmitters are now "hard wired" and are dead until, or unless, they are manually switched on at Donovan's station.
Donovan's switches on the radio transmitters, and on the active sensors, too has three settings: Off, Test, and On. Off means off, no power, no workie. Test means on, but data only going to his station so he can monitor what they are trying to do. On means they are allowed to work normally.
The passive sensors begin building up a picture of the system.
There are 18 bogies flying in the area around The New Chance. Twelve of them have Transponders on, but six do not. None are currently attempting to actively scan you, and the quiet ones are very quiet...the ones with Transponders are conducting normal radio traffic that mining, transport, and small boats would be having with each other and with what appear to be two "Bases" here in the "Belt."
The two bases are providing constant transmissions with location and navigation data. The one near the Second Gas Giant identifies as Jackson Hole the one at a large asteroid trailing the giant by about 8 million km identifies itself and Louisa's Loonies. The 18 boats moving in the area are all heading toward one, or the other, of these bases.

The trio enter Enginnering to find Doug sitting at a console going through the logs on the screen
"Hey!" he hardly looks up, "The Jump drive is working just fine, but it's still running about 0.02% hot. Danged, if I won't get her to dead zero before we need to jump again."
Over in the corner of the Engineering deck you see Bob lying down on a cot with his eyes closed. Doug finally looks up and sees Zaki, "Oh, Zaki! Good! Bob puked and got light headed, so I told him to lie down until his gut settles. I told him not to eat that Prawn MRE today. Wouldn't listen. Never get sick. Yeah."
This gets a half-hearted "Groan!" from Bob.
Sigrun and Karcsi both see the pool of vomit on the deck and smears where somebody stepped in it and tracked it between the pool and the cot.
"It's gonna stink in here." Doug mutters as he goes back to work at the console where he is seated, "But dealing with the shutdown of J Mode and the startup of N Mode takes priority."

Sigrún nods "A little stronger on "backed up latrines" and we might just have hit "troopship". Chief, you're busy. Where's your bucket of "soak dust" and the shovel?"
She moves into Engineering after Zaki.
Re: 0006 Rumbles on Rangent
Karcsi catches Sigrun's eye and uses his face to point at the standing engineer and Karcsi moves to the one in the cot.
Puts the rifle on his shoulder and does a quick assessment of him, looking for bruising and knocks on the head.
