The promise of opportunity in the neighboring town has drawn your group together, and rumors of strange happenings along the route make it almost a necessity to travel in numbers. The half-completed journey has been uneventful, but far more arduous than any of you expected.
The midday sun, rising in the east, split the twin ranges that mark your passage. A funnel of sorts.
Lush greens fill the landscape.
Several hundred yards head of you, a large tree stands in your path -- its sturdy trunk splitting to a 'V' an estimated 50-feet above the ground; each branch climbing skyward for another 50-feet or so.
This tree, you were informed, marks the half-way point in your journey... meaning, at least a half-days worth of difficult travel still lies ahead.

Along the lush landscape to either side of you, natural wildlife, mostly in the form of deer and goat, can occasionally be spotted darting about.
Giant birds -- falcons, or maybe hawks -- can be seen dotting the skies on occasion as well.
Then...
While squinting against the sunlight, you detect the seemingly casual movement of two bipedal forms at the base of your landmark tree.
The forms, which you suspect might be human, lack significant identifying detail from 300+ yards distant.
