Character Creation & Rules Info

#1 Post by hedgeknight »

Character Creation:

> Core Books: Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, Forgotten Realms Adventures
> Other sources: Faiths & Pantheons (for Clerics); any others?
> Core Classes: Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Mage, Illusionist, Cleric, Druid, Thief, Bard. Multi-class characters are acceptable.
> Core Races: Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Halfling, Human.

Campaign ID: 961

Stats/Rolling the dice:
> 4d6 - drop lowest, make 1's and 2's a "3"; arrange to suit your character choice.
> Hit Points: All characters will receive maximum hit points at 1st level. Thereafter, you may roll, or take average hit points instead:
Hit Die Average Hit Points

d4 3
d6 4
d8 5
d10 6
d12 7
(Don't forget to add in your CON bonuses!)

Beginning XP and Level of character:
Everyone has 3,000 xp to start. This will put most characters at 3rd level, some at 2nd.

Starting Equipment/Gold/Magic:
> Pages 66-76 of the PHB.
> Each character will have 1-2 magic items. 2nd level characters have one magic item; 3rd level characters have two magic items.
Roll 1d4 to determine which list, then roll from the lists below:

On a roll of 1 or 2:
Potion (roll d20):

1/ Animal Control
2/ Clairaudience
3/ Clairvoyance
4/ Climbing
5/ Diminution
6/ Fire Resistance
7/ Flying
8/ Gaseous Form
9/ Growth
10/ Healing
11/ Invisibility
12/ Levitation
13/ Oil of Fiery Burning
14/ Oil of Impact
15/ Oil of Slipperiness
16/ Plant Control
17/ Polymorph Self
18/ Speed
19/ Sweet Water
20/ Water Breathing

On a roll of 3 or 4:
Minor Magic Weapons/Items: (Roll d100)

01-75 - +1 Ranged Weapon (arrow, bolt, sling bullet, dart; half-dozen)
76-95 - Bracers of Defense AC6, Shield +1, or Melee Weapon +1 (your choice)
96-00 - Ring of Fire Resistance, Boots of Elvenkind, Javelin of Lightning, or Quaal's Feather Token (your choice)

Miscellaneous Equipment:
I could list 100 or more items to add to the list from the PHB. Items such as winter blanket, grappling hook, horn, parchment, whistle, etc. It might be simpler just to say that if there is an item you want your character to have that is not on the 2E PHB list, just let me know and we'll work it out.
Edit: I would also like to use the Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue (or whatever it is called; like an idiot I sold mine a long time ago). I may have it on pdf somewhere...

House Rules

I really don't have a lot of house rules...even though we may come up with some as we go along ;)

As for NWP, what if we do this:
Everyone has 10 NWP. Yes, 10. Six of those are in the General area; four in your specific character choice. Some obviously compliment each other. If your character grew up on a farm, they would know about agriculture, animal handling, cooking, fire-building, riding, rope use, etc. Or their parents may have been weavers > this would entail artistic ability, leatherworking, weaving, rope use, etc, etc. Make sense?
Edit: *Using NWP is completely optional. You can flesh out your character with them or you can simply say, my character grew up along the Sword Coast so they know how to swim and jump and throw rocks. I'm not going to micro-manage this. Use as you see fit. If there's an issue, we can address it in your private thread.

Extra Resources

I'm fine with using the following extra sources:
Faiths and Avatars, Demihuman Deities, Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, Arms & Equipment Guide.
Are these sources necessary to create or flesh out your character? Absolutely not!
Everything you really need is in the PHB and DMG. But...I have always used these in my 2e games, so they are OPTIONS for you to access if you wish. If something is a bit overpowering, let me know and we can figure it out. If you don't have access to these guides, then don't worry about it.

What about Kits?
Let's hold off...for now. Maybe make them as part of a leveling up somewhere along the line? I don't know. We'll talk more about it.
