I'd let players build their starting henchman along with their character if they wished, but I would run them, though your character can give them orders. I would be working under the assumption that off screen, your PC takes time to run drills and the like with their henchmen, so that in the heat of battle you can give basic commands, like Charge!,Protect the magic-user, Heal <name> that sort of thing. Of course, henchmen would be subject to morale rolls in combat, and I would decide how they interpret your commands.

Sounds like an interesting game. Now I just have to wait a couple of months.

You mean, giving something meaty for MONSTERS to chew on, right?archolewa wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 5:42 pm I really like the idea of henchmen, because they strike me as giving something meaty for players chew on, without having to give PCs a ton of fancy-pants powers like more modern editions do. The low level magic-user can give commands to his fighter henchmen. The high level fighter has a mid-level cleric and magic-user backing him up with buffs and utility spells.

Seriously though, I love henchmen too, although if done poorly, they can really drag down a game. My favorite use of them was in a game I ran back in the early 2000's where a paladin character had several henchmen. I was nervous at first allowing it, but they turned out to be some memorable NPC's and offered a lot of gaming opportunities.

And I'm steadily reading Rappan Athuk. I've finished reading through the outside stuff, the surrounding dungeons and level 1. So I should have enough of it read to get the game started by the start of the year. Don't have any big shakeups on the horizon in my life, so there's a good shot that I'll be looking to get a game setup in the first week of January or so. A lot will depend on how busy the holidays end up being.

Holidays are always busy I feel hehe.
But great news! Still planning on going with OSRIC?

Glad to hear it - I have heard great things about the system, and how it emulates AD&D.
Just recently got an A5 Layflat version from Lulu - looks really good. The font size is not easy on my eyes though.

I would love to find a learning group for D&D 4e.
Gave it a short try back in the day, but quickly put it aside for stuff like Pathfimder.
Nowadays I feel it deserves to be revisited, and would very much like to learn the system.

I'm enjoying the heck out of Scarik's Hauberk, a mashup of Chainmail and BX.
Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
Sorry, I can't help here as I have never played 4e. Wondering why the interest as I have only heard negative comments about it. I have played 5e pretty extensively and know a couple of players who tried 4e but didn't care for it.
Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
I had a whole post written down and it bugged out on me…
Bottom line, I feel like the ruleset was dismissed too fast by most people, including me. And having recently checked several YouTube and blogs about it, I have heard and read many good things about the system. So I would like to give it a second chance.
I love the aesthetics and the monsters, and the at-will, encounter and daily powers (which I initially detested) are starting to grow on me

And even though I am firmly going back to old-school as a DM, I am fascinated by the variety in 4e.
Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
I'm not familiar (at all) with 4e, but from what I've heard about it, I can definitely see where it might appeal to a highly tactical player interested in detailed combat.
A 'D&D (4e)' sub-topic could be created within the Scenario Simulator to give it a test run.

Is there any interest in a Mutants & Masterminds (3e) game or a Zombie Run using Old School Essentials?
Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
I wouldn't mind playing some of the most iconic 3.0/3.5/d20/PF1 stuff, using the simplest possible (compatible) system , perhaps PF1e Core rules only
We could even have some sort of round robin system? Everyone interested put forth a level 1 module they could/would DM, then all vote and play the most voted. Then everyone except the last DM does the same for another level 1, or a level 2 depending on whether the characters leveled or not. So on and so forth until all have DMed, then it goes full circle. Could be one shots, sequential or not, same characters or not. Maybe we have played all the way up to level 3, but there is someone who would really love to DM a specific level 1, no harm no foul, play with other level 1 characters.
Could also flip it around and instead put forth something you would really like to play, and then someone takes it up
Dunno, something like that
Thoughts?

I'd kind of like to run my own game called ARETE, which is set in Homeric Greece and fashioned to focus on honorable Hellenic heroism. If anyone's interested I'll PM you the pdf.
Neil Gaiman: "I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase 'politically correct' wherever we could with 'treating other people with respect', and it made me smile."..."I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking 'Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!'"

I'm pretty strained for free time, but I love the Iliad and Greek mythology, so I can't resist. What posting rate are you looking for?

Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
I’d love to play in a 2E/3E Ravenloft campaign set in 735 BC and playing through published adventures from the AD&D era like the Grand Conjunction, Bleak House, etc. Ideally, I’d prefer to play it using AD&D 2E rules using the Skills & Powers supplement, but I’d also like to play it with Pathfinder 1E rules (as that’s just a modification of 3.5, and Ravenloft has plenty of material in 3.5 thanks to , so it’s a quick and easy conversion).
I’d also love to play in a Forgotten Realms campaign during the 2E/3E era of the setting using AD&D (with or without Skills & Powers), Pathfinder 1E, Castles & Crusades, Shadowdark, or Old-School Essentials.
And if someone’s running Dark Sun, Birthright, or Greyhawk using any of the systems above, I’d be up for that, too.
