Re: Garrotten
Lestadt
"As you wish." His posture suddenly relaxes and he casually resumes his seat, displaying no evidence of any knee injury whatsoever. "My real name is Lestadt. After I explain our true purpose here, I trust you will understand our caution."
He rests both hands on the head of his cane and gazes intently at the Curate for a long moment. "The Baron of Restenford is dead. Murdered in his bed two nights ago. We have been sent here by the Wizard Pelltar to identify and apprehend the assassin ... dead or alive.'
Lestadt allows a few moments to pass for Basil to process this revelation. He holds up a hand to allay any questions while he continues to explain. "Three pieces of evidence were discovered, implicating three prominent residents of Garrotten. A golden lute string, a red leather vest button, and a tiny ruby."
"All three individuals were seen entering Restenford the night of the murder. None were seen leaving. Balmorrow the playwright, Abraham the innkeeper ... and Harper the High Priest. We have deduced these items were planted at the scene, confirmed the string and button stolen, and their respective owners had not travelled to Restenford recently."
"The ruse concerning the octopus, as you astutely surmised, is a cover to conceal our true mission. Harper's condition would prevent him travelling to Restenford for dinner, let alone thereafter murdering a man. I checked his holy symbol for a missing ruby eye ... interestingly, neither are missing."
"As to why these three individuals were falsely implicated? Both Balmorrow and Abraham are aware of the assassins in Garrotten, and from your own admission, the Guild is known to the church of Osprem, as well. I suspect this has not gone unnoticed ..."
He leans back into the cushion of the chair and gestures nonchalantly to Basil. "Now, we would be very interested in what you can tell us."

Luna walks out with Zahra and asks: "What did you make of that? Other visitors? And did you see the groundskeeper? I'd really like to talk with him."

The Not So Secret Investigation
Godsday, Morning, Clear
Second Day After The Barons Murder
The Church Of Osprem (3)
The two visitors are shown the door, but in a very polite manner. They are then escorted to the outer gate where the sign announcing services times is clearly posted.
There is no indication that the groundskeeper is still around.

The Church Of Osprem (3)
Curate Basil looks upon the revelations from Lestadt with an expression that he himself was easily duped by the disguise. He lets the man speak uninterrupted until he is finished, before looking at the pair with slowly waning astonishment. "My word. And to think.....we were concerned about you being involved with the assassins."
After hearing the news about the Baron, Basil sits down at the table, urging Draxon to also sit, offering both men a glass of wine as he fills his nearly to the brim.
"The Baron? This is getting even more serious than we thought. We know of Pelltar, and consider him to be a good man, but you guys......"
He points to Lestadt again. "You're very good at what you do, I must admit. And if you were sent by Pelltar, I promise the church will cooperate fully."
"Now, to answer you....... I can assure you that Harper was NOT in Restenford recently. But of course you already know that. Though we are aware of the rumors of assassin activity, murders are simply not happening in or around Garrotten. I think that fact makes tolerating some bad actors a little easier for any budding or established businesses in town. Most folks don't know or care where the money is coming from, as long as there are profits to be made."
The priest takes a long drink of his wine before finishing his thoughts. "I have heard there are some questionable folk living right under Abrahams nose at his inn. Have you checked there yet? The church does know him well, and trusts the proprietor, but the fact that he doesn't discriminate against such folk burdens our congregation with deep concern."

Priska's House (39)
As the grey rhino and its elven rider race off through the town to get back into the forest, they hear all kinds of chatter from throughout the scattering townies.
"I saw em up close! Definitely assassins! Both of em!"
"They killed Priska! And that poor man wouldn't hurt a flea!"
"Don't let em get away with this shite! Eye for an eye around these parts!"
"They wont be hard to track with those huge feet pressing holes into the ground everywhere they walk."
"What the hells is that thing?"
"How we gonna get poor Priska out of that house now if its collapsed?"
"I think they are trying to get away by running into the forest!"
"Fire at will, boys!"
The 8 castle guards continue their hot pursuit through yards and lawns, unable to catch up with the animal but keeping it in their sights instead of reloading and stopping to fire again. More commotion escalates as the duo flees, causing even more folks to come out of their houses to see what is going on. The huge animal eventually makes the tree line where they were earlier, ducking into the foliage as soon as they arrive, but the guards are still hot on their heels stumpy thick legs.

Quicksilver Carling
Just hoping the rhino can keep or even increase distance between us and the pursuers.
nice use of the potion, very creative.
He has no tricks up his sleeve. "Say did you quaff all the potion or just half?" he asks figuring if Redgrave was benevolent enough and a portion was spared then he could avail a sip and we both turn into wood pigeons and fly away.
If not, he might have to think other creative ways to escape mob justice. Surrendering now to the guards is out. But perhaps the furore might open a door into the Assassin guild if he can figure some convincing story.
Our only link, alleged suspects Philmar and Oscar. Hope Abraham's suspicions prove correct and he can make some kind of contact but must slip the guard to make the tavern.

Karloff Redgrave
An unusual feeling. Running through the forest on four stumpy legs instead of two ones. Redgrave rhino is probably quite uncoordinated.
The potion has all been quaffed unfortunately so changing Carling is not possible. Perhaps if I had thought about it in the shack we could have had two Rhinos.
Not wanting to end up as a trophy head upon a tavern or mayoral wall, I will keep going through the forest past the bandit camp, heading towards the riverbank. My plan might be to go hippo, swan, eel or another animal that I can camouflage myself as.
"I agree we need to contact those gamblers. Find which one may be associated with the Assassin guild and try to infiltrate it."
I will dodge through the denser foliage and by thicker trees so Carling can perhaps find a tree to climb or hide while the guards follow the tracks.

Second Day After The Barons Murder
Outside The Church Of Osprem (3)
When the priest who escorted them to the gate turns around, Luna and Zahra do as well, heading back towards the cemetery behind the church. They spot the old groundskeeper pulling weeds along the outside of a long portion fence on the other side of the grounds. As they start making their way towards him, the priest who was headed back into the building hears them talking and turns around again, shouting in a stern voice.
"Ahhhhhh? Ladies? Can I ask where you think you're going now? Did I not just ask you to leave the premises?"

Back Into The Forest
The guards giving chase stow their crossbows and draw their swords once the fleeing duo gets beyond the tree line and into the foliage. If they thought it was easy to follow the heavy tracks in the soft ground, the obvious path the huge beast makes through the trees may as well have signs posted along the way. They continue their pursuit, even though the pair continues to put more distance in between the two groups.
Rhino Redgrave tries to charge under or nearby some sturdy branches in case Carling wants his ride to be over sooner, eventually breaking through the trees at the bank of the lake again. There they see two young boys with fishing poles sitting on the edge of the shoreline. The boys jump up in terror when they observe an animal they had no idea existed. "Hey! Jethro! What the heck is that thing?" The second, older lad looks like he might jump into the lake to avoid any contact. "I aint certain, but it sure dont look too friendly!"

"Yes, we have interviewed Abraham and he is cooperating with us fully. I wouldn't however characterize his behaviour as indifferent to unsavory folk; a pair of gamblers with no other known vocation. He is quite aware of them and their nature, but without reasonable cause to act on it, he risks alerting the Guild to his observations. We have associates working to either gain their trust as potential customers or Guild recruits."
"There is another odd fellow I mentioned before. The so called Captain Basmar, although we can assure you he is no captain and likely never sailed a day in his life. Abraham doesn't suspect him, but I am not so sure. He could be an agent of the Lord Mayor. I was planning on requesting an audience with her under the pretense of seeking a reward for slaying the octopus."
"Mr. Draxon and I were also planning to interview the lake workers, see what they can tell us about Captain Basmar, his history and known associates."

Quicksilver Carling
Jumps off by the riverbank and the two youths.
"That's okay boys. This beast is just a big soft puppy. One of the circus animals. Going to be in a show at Balmorrow's theatre."
He sheaths his sword which he has been using to giddy up his mount or swish branches out of the way.
Carling: Charisma check vs 14. [1d20]=16 Reactions +10% [1d100]=83
"He'll even let you guys ride him back to town. Won't you Red?"
He tries to convince the boys to exchange places, figuring if Red Rhino did run off into the forest, the guards won't fire for fear of hitting the children. If they accept the ruse (and Karloff does too), it might allow him to slip away and sneak back to the tavern?

Why I just didn't turn into a horse and ride away quicker is beyond me.
He decides not to speak. A talking rhino might be too much for these kids to take. He crouches down for the kids to mount then trots off.
I will take them to the edge of town then morph back into dwarf form.
"Sssh, it's a secret. All part of Balmorrow's show. Here take a coin each and treat yourselves and family to a ticket."
If he can his next stop, avoiding guards, might be the weaponsmith.

"I see. It sounds like your team is deeper into this than I initially thought then. I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone named Captain Basmar, so I cant tell you more than that. It isn't totally unthinkable that the Mayor may have people around town that keep tabs on certain things for her. I would think that likely in any town our size. That's politics, after all."
"Asking around town might help as well, but just remember, if you ask the wrong person the wrong thing, it puts an even bigger target on your own back. We here at the church don't know much about this situation so far, but that tells us a lot actually. Because if there really is an assassins guild here in town, and they are so good at keeping it a secret that neither the Mayor, the church, or the authorities know anything about it, this may lead deeper than any of us can imagine."

The two boys seem unsure at first, but once the offer of a free ticket comes up, they eagerly set down their fishing poles and hop on the animal with a boost from Carling. "Oh boy! A real live circus! Coming here to Garrotten? That's gonna be GREAT!"
As the huge beast trots off along the lake towards town again, the younger boy replies. "What's a circus?"
Watching them leave the area, Carling can hear the guards tearing through the trees in front of him, about to breach the foliage. The footprints the massive animal makes in the wet ground are even deeper here by the water, and by the sounds of the growing crowds shouting out calls for action back at the home they just destroyed, this situation appears to be far from over.

The footprints the massive animal makes in the wet ground are even deeper here by the water, and by the sounds of the growing crowds shouting out calls for action back at the home they just destroyed, this situation appears to be far from over.

Quicksilver Carling
"Meet back in the tavern." he says to the trotting off polymorphed dwarf.
With tracks going in one direction, I will set off in the other, not quite doubling back in case I run into the odd guard but going around the forest. Waiting for the hullabaloo to die down, I will look for a suitable place to hide for a couple of hours, perhaps under the bridge or in another thicket of the wood.

Karloff Redgrave
I think I will enact this.
I will take them to the edge of town then morph back into dwarf form.
"Sssh, it's a secret. All part of Balmorrow's show. Here take a coin each and treat yourselves and family to a ticket.
And if anyone asks, tell them the beast went into the lake."
If he can avoid guards, while he is in town, it might be worth ticking the Weapon smith off his list. Just to touch base with another business and one that might rival Krak's. He is not happy the half-orc abandoned us at the shack after being paid and perhaps I can find a way to undermine the guy's business.
