Re: The Green Room (OOC)

Somewhat revised version
Audition for the rhythm guitarist! Well, not really a formal audition, just the current band members acoustic-jamming at a house party near the Tufts University campus. (Not that any of them had anything to do with Tufts. Or probably the word 'university' either). The jam is going good, people of various unique types of and levels of consciousness have gathered around. Or going on about their partying, as new people come in. The bedrooms are all occupied with the doors locked. To everyone in the hallway's great chagrin, the bathroom's door is also locked. "Knock knock! You two wait for a bedroom, like everyone else!"

Somebody screeches a turntable needle during the middle of Kansas's "Carry On My Wayward Son." Strange raw music (Iggy Pop and the Stooges' "Raw Power") assault's everyone's ears for a minute or so. Everyone but the Band make faces or their eyes. Soon enough, there's a screech across that vinyl surface too, and Queen's "A Day at the Races" settles in.

At that point, two mysterious strangers somehow find guitars and join the backroom jam.
Aydon "Scott" Hamish

This guy riffs on the bass player's noodling, and takes it one level higher. "Dig it, keep on truckin'! Yeah. Bass, for the bridge move up like this. Same fingering, just a shift up." During a break, "My name's Aydon, but everybody calls me Scott. It's short for 'scotch.' Because I like scotch." The band kicks up again and they all go to new places they've never gone before.

James "Janx" Wilkie
Image
Wilkie came in a little later, after having waited a long time for the bathroom. "Good thing I didn't get arrested for public peeing. Man, wish they'd left that Iggy Pop on." Sits down, drops some Visine into his eyes, and gets right into the jam. But his playing is a little eccentric, not very blues-based. More like Yes-classical based, and more angle-y. He sings kind of a backing vocals thing with a few actual lyrics thrown in, "Da da-da da, breathes there the man with soul so dead, oo da-da da, bands of azure, bands of red...."

It's a great jam, they forget time, the riffing and soloing just flow all night until the sun comes up. Unfortunately, no one thought to record it.

Q: Who does the band select for their rhythm guitarist? Aydon "Scott" Hamish or James "Janx" Wilkie?
Q : If they do, do they remember it the next day?
Whoever's picked will be my PC. You can PM me your vote if you prefer.

I will try and get my sheet done Saturday. I am thing a female rocker just to mix it up, bass or drums are fine with me unless you want a straight vocalist.

What? Bummer, man. I see that while struggling with equipment problems, I posted variations of the same post three times. And the equipment won't let me erase the tapes, I can only record over them. I swear it was equipment problem and I wasn't trashed at the time-- I did it in the daytime while I was at work!
(Seriously, sorry about that. My edits to the original post weren't saved when I viewed it again. Seems that attempt at each edit and submit became a new post).

Re: The Green Room (OOC)

#30 Post by jemmus »

James "Janx" Wilkie has become a full member of the band. By virtue of showing up, hanging around, usually having a dime bag with him, and nobody really noticing or discussing any uptight business stuff. Such as, who's actually a member of the band.

One day he rushes into a jam (as much as laidback Janx can rush into anything) and says emphatically (as much as laidback and usually pretty toasted Janx can), Trouble, man. Might be trouble. Kim (Jimmy Daniels's, the current manager's current girlfriend, really old, like at least 30) said Jimmy says he needs a name for the band. I was like, "Kim, names are just labels, man. Baba Ram Dass, he wrote Be Here Now said, 'Whenever you put a name on something, you limit its possibilities.' It's like you put it in a box and put it on a shelf. Like at Sears or J.C. Penny's. Our music doesn't need a label putting limits on its possibilities. Be here now, man."

Well, Kim said, "You're right, Janx. No label, no label. Not even any gigs. Keep on pumping gas. There's your limits on your possibilities." And then she went on to that if say that if we don't have a name soon, Jimmy'l decide on one on himself. Like maybe "No," as both a tribute to Yes and a protest against the band's 'pompous bullsheet.' Then she threw out a few more. 'Silver Bullet.' 'Electric Butterfly.' 'Tricky and the Crickets.' She said he was leaning toward 'Tricky and The Crickets.' When she said it, she did that face he does, the one where you can't tell if he's serious, actually crazy, or just messing with your head.
See portrait of manager Jimmy Daniels, viewtopic.php?f=1082&t=10913

(Slowly and stonily contemplates a little). I think he's serious, man. He's might just name us Tricky & The Crickets. I don't want to be a Cricket.

After some searching, the bandmates manage to find the list of proposed band names. They're on the back of section of a brown King Kullen supermarket bag.

Tomb of Whores-- I kind of like that one! Everybody picking three sounds like a good plan.

The band member sheets seem done. They look great. I think all that’s left is the name. Urson has gotten stage fright and won’t be joining the band. He will no doubt regret it when you’re big and famous.

I’ll kick off the IC thread this week!

Janx, uncharacteristically showing a high degree of initiative and organizational skill, again finds the piece of brown grocery store bag with the proposed names for the band. Can't find a pen or pencil anywhere, but does find a stub of a red crayon.

Says with a comical dead-serious face, We are going to follow the rules of parliamentary procedure. a) Everybody gets three votes. Pick your three favorites. b) The take-back period is closed. Except for people who have already voted. That's Mel and me. c) We have to do it that way or we'll never get anywhere and Jimmy'll name the band something stupid for us. d) We need Derek's, Scamp's and Hooter's votes. If you want you can write them right on this paper.

Hooter gets all excited about the list and quickly finds a blue crayon to begin marking on the sheet. The names are so good! I still vote for The Critz! I think it is a good one, yeah?
Oooooo... and Tiamat like the dragon mama, yeah? This would be good! Big checkmark there...
Ohh.... Dungeon Master? We can go on stage looking kinky, right? I can wear my pvc Lederhosen! What? No? You sure? I could put them on now... Then you see? No?
Well... How about the TPK? Total Polka Kiddos, yeah? I will putz my check here, too!

Janx looks perplexed, which is not an especially uncommon look for him. But he marks the paper with what he thinks Hooter said. Then with Scamp's votes.

- Quasality
-Tetraquark
-Thunderfuzz
- Clockwork Angels
- Boomshanka
- Equinox
- Thac0 2 like it so far
- Tiamat 1
- Venger Rides Again
- Dungeon Master
- TPK 2 3 4
- Wandering Metal Monster
- Mosh Monster
- Tomb of Horrors or Tomb of Whores 2 Changing my vote - [legal signature] James Wilkie
- First Edition! 1
- Vorpal Opera!
- By-Tor
- Tobes of Hades
- Snow Dogs 1
- Strangiato 1 Changing my vote - [legal signature] James Wilkie
- The Critz! 1
- Dungeon Master 1

Has a bit of a logical quandary about the Dungeon Master proposal. Thinks, "Should it count as a vote? I mean, Hooter likes it so that's like a vote for it. But then I think Hooter would vote four times, which would be against parliamentary procedure. Ah well, Hooter's cool, being uncool to him would be uncool." Goes ahead and puts a 1 beside Dungeon Master. We just need The Whizzard's votes now.
