Sorry everyone. I am subscribed both to the Time of Dragons (5e) thread AND the Chapter One - Into the Shadows topic yet I haven't been receiving any notifications. Posting ASAP to the main topic.

That happens to me sometimes. Not sure what causes it. When it happens I un-subsribe and then come back to it later in the day and re-subscribe.

I did that right after I posted and so far I am getting notifications again. Hopefully that took care of it.

Are you guys liking the use of private forums to keep the character experience more specific? (If thats the right way to explain it)

I like them, but I'm willing to trust everybody to be able to separate player knowledge from character knowledge. I know private forums do increase the workload of the GM.

Agreeing with Enoch, I trust people to separate info and don't see them as strictly necessary.

That said, I do really like that it adds to roleplay and experience - when you provide details in private and then it's up to the player characters to introduce it into play, I think it adds something. I like not having perfect knowledge as a player and I like it being incumbent on us to share things in our roleplay.

I used private forums extensively on this forum in the large game I ran and I like that you're doing so. It is all extra work for you do if you are happy doing it, I will just be grateful. :)

I agree :) We are all adults here and I believe we can trust each other to play honestly, but if the GM really feels like something needs to be kept private for a bigger reveal later, that is fine with me as well.

I really like the private forums. It think it adds realism and a nice extra dimension to the game. But don't let it become a burden for you, Radrabbit.

I would like to be explicit in our agreement as players/DM about the implications, though, as agreeing on the concept of playstyle will help people be less disgruntled. Are we engaging in a single group story, or are we sandboxing with independent action?

If it is a single group story, it is implied that side diversions will be brief with OOC effort on the part of both players and DM to bring things back together and ensure that the action is available to everyone as a whole. (Rodrigo staying behind to resolve the map-girl, Awwrak coming back to get the group before engaging the plot hook, both of which were resolved relatively quickly and expressed reunification desires.)

The ability to divert into private forums feeds the latter, though. Side-tasks in a more Sandbox style. It supports "realism" in that it allows each player to take whatever action they want, but it is not in line with the implicit player agreement that we'll all be involved in sharing the story. (Lothien/Rodrigo in a side-channel while everyone else waits in the clearing, Kura at the tunnel without others catching up.)

Honestly, I'm fine with either a group on a single adventure, or with a sandbox of side-quests where we all are essentially on separate adventures where we hook up and compare notes later. I just want to make sure we're all in agreement on which one we're doing. In this case, I felt uncomfortable having adventures the others couldn't see, resulting in my coming back as soon as possible and making a big info dump post to bring everyone up to speed and reunify the group. If we're okay prioritizing IC motivation and private forums for the game actions, I will be okay with that and have Awwrak fly back ahead to where he was, letting the others have their side-adventure, too, and nobody feels guilty.

...I'm just not comfortable that there's three side-quests going on with Sade, 3of4, and Qualnaar standing in a clearing and waiting for them all to end before they get to participate in something.

I'm in about the same boat--Kura went off on his own because PCs started leaving without any attempt at building consensus on a plan, but I tried to wait to allow Awwrak to bring the group together before starting anything of importance. However, I started feeling silly just sitting there when it appeared that everyone else was off on side adventures, too.

It is essentially a single group set up with the freedom to split off temporarily before coming back together.
I wasn't planning on letting people just do their own thing indefinitely.
With regard to the folks in the clearing I was about to give you more information since I try not to let people be stuck around twiddling their thumbs.
That being said, if you want to stick with a single group story that is also fine.
The idea of the private forums is to make it more realistic that you don't know what's been going on.
Let me know what you guys would prefer.

Thanks for the clarification - I appreciate the approach and knowing that you're monitoring to make sure everyone is involved and all the threads converge is good enough for me.

I'll have Awwrak return to Kura, having delivered his news to the group, and let them enjoy their own arc with you. :)

I think the realism of not knowing what my character doesn't know is nice. But I do want to get Lothien back to the party, so the story can proceed as a group. And I don't want some nasty to pick off Lothien's little 1st-level self because of straggling from the group.... :)

And that's the trick. Stick together and not be distracted by the shiny objects.
If there was no issues brought up by the wandering monster die, Rodrigo and Lothien would be back with the main group mhahahahaha

Yeah, the private forums are fine. I enjoy it. :) If you decide on another route, I'm sure that'll be fine, as well. I'm liking the game, so far. Thanks for running it.
