Background

Gunnery Sergeant Jessyka Henker was born on Mirage ( a rich, balkanised, desert world in Gazulin subsector, an Imperial part of the Trojan Reach sector ) in the year 1075. Her mother Amina is a Mirage native, unemployed from age 20. Her father Mathius is an ex-pat from Pretoria, a retired Tomb Robber. Her Family were part of the general citizenry of the city-state Perchta, sustained by the government issued State Dividend – a proportion of the proceeds from ore mining, refining and export. The production process is automated, with all but a handful of the workers displaced – the Divi and a ready supply of drugs keep the populous mostly quiet, although there is growing unrest. Troublemakers are transported to exile aboard Mirage Cooperation Council ships.

The prospect of a life of useless indolence on the Divi appalled Jessyka and the few supervisor or technician jobs were unavailable to her social class. The local military forces of the various mining City States are dedicated to internal security, and the occasional “restoration of order” in a failing neighbour, but the Gazulin Army ( neighbour world and Subsector Capital ) regularly trains and recruits on Mirage. It was her chance to escape to a life with some purpose. Jessyka joined up the day after her 18th birthday, and took to the Army like finding a home.

Assigned to the 7th Dragoons, an armoured infantry regiment, her first tour of duty after training was supposed to be a simple rebel suppression on Junction ( a balkanised TL6 world ) that turned into a prolonged holding action for her patrol, surrounded by unexpectedly numerous insurgents, earning an MCUF and promotion to Lance-Jack for her conduct. This excitement was damped down by the tedium of garrison duty and base security for the rest of the term. The majority of the rest of Jessyka's service was spent serving in the “peacekeeping” occupation forces in the tunnels and domes of MacDermont ( a vacuum world whose government was destroyed by civil unrest ) or in the hinterlands of Junction, with occasional rebel hunts or Corsair mop-up for variety. Several of those "Corsairs" were in fact Aslan Ihatei bands, and an engagement with one of them on New Moscow at the end of her third term led to serious injury. Toward the end of her fourth term a poorly planned offensive to crush one of the major factions on MacDermont led Jessyka's unit into a well laid ambush set by the Aslan mercenaries hired to strengthen the local militia. Jessyka was made into a hero for her actions and sent on a recruiting tour. The disillusionment of grinding peacekeeping tours, the debacle of her last combat mission, and the PR circus that turned it into a “good news” story led to her leaving the service.

"I don't know about 'heroically breaking through the barriers'. I certainly wrote off my vehicle trying to get away. I was lucky there was a Tac to hand for that VRF or I'd have been shredded in the wreck instead of just getting a couple of needles. As to getting my commanding officer safely back to base to organise relief - I didn't even know the halfwit was hiding in the back of the APC I commandeered. If I had I'd have kicked him out and made room for more of the wounded. I do know I'll never follow an idiotic plan or stupid order again."

The recording of that frustrated, bitter, truth-telling over drinks with a “friend” meant the Army were happy to let Jessyka go.



The decadence of Mirage means she has no desire to “go home”, and she doesn't feel comfortable with her ( minor ) celebrity in the Gazulin Subsector ( although to most it was 'last years news' she is recognised by local military types). She doesn't feel ready for civilian life, and wants to do more with her training than serve as a recruiting asset. Perhaps the Spinward Marches are a good place to start over.

Description

Slightly above average height ( 5'10'' ), average build ( perhaps gained a few pounds since leaving active deployment ). Long dark hair usually rolled and pinned into a 'bun' or plaited in braids. Brown eyes. Scar high on the right side of neck, under her jaw. Typically eschews cosmetics, or uses a subtle minimum, but does like to get “dolled up” for special occasions. Normally jewellery free she will put on earrings if appropriate to the situation. Casually dressed, in clean, well pressed clothes. . Plain brown or khaki t-shirt/long sleeved top, weather-proof “Stockmans” coat or light-weight brown leather jacket, tan or taupe trousers ( neatly pressed ), hiking shoes or steel toe-capped “Rigger” boots. If outdoors wears a "Mirage - Oasis of Relaxation" peaked cap. An ammo pouch on her belt serves as a 'purse', and she uses a dispatch-riders shoulder bag for extra stowage. She likes to add a splash of colour with a scarf ( which also covers her scar). She also has a tailored Dress Uniform ( from her recruiting tour ), her demob “job-interview” business suit and shoes, a set of clean khaki mechanics overalls, and the inevitable LBD. She also has a large army-surplus backpack and a suitcase on annoying little wheels ( that she carries rather than hear rattle ).

Jessyka has several tattoos that are usually hidden by her clothing or hair. Mostly they mark significant events in her life, but the oldest are the mistakes of youth.


Someone familiar with her resume may notice, looking at her ribbons, that the MCG is not worn.

Communicator, Personal (“Comm”) A hand-held, single
channel communication device. On worlds with a Tech Level of 8 or
higher a personal communicator is able to tap into the world’s satellite

Not the most exciting piece of equipment ever, but the A101 will help keep you alive. It differs
from the standard tester in that it is worn on a wristband rather than being handheld, and is a
good bit smaller. According to the literature its high-technology systems react to atmospheric
conditions in 82% of the time taken by the ‘industry standard’ model, whichever one that is.
The A101 monitors air breathability and quality. A bleep and flash alert informs of hazardous
conditions (parameters can be set as to exactly what ‘hazardous’ means. The readout also

Before joining the Army Jess was a member of one of the gangs that raced dune-buggies and motorcycles in the deserts of Mirage. As the skills she learned then were the a good foundation for her Cavalry career it doesn't count as a misspent youth.

Probably wise - she may have dodged not a bullet but a (very charming and well intentioned) train wreck there! :D He's also clearly got some sort of on/off angry viking thing going on with Tourmaline ...

However, she gets the impression that his (bedroom) door's always open - which is perhaps the issue ... :roll:

I like to let the dice tell me about the character until I have a firm grip on it. Again, they rolled sensible result.

I think Jess is the sort who reacts to surviving a firefight by looking to enjoy life, but also sees the sense of the military non-fraternisation code. Best not to sleep with people in your chain of command. In this case, people you're working with. :)

I was thinking about the Char Lady the other day, when the idea of returning to Bartertown came up. She's Jess' first stop contact . Pity I haven't got any stims for her....

Still, there must be something we can spare. Cash, probably :D

I'm assuming the Vaporators have been building up a supply for Jess to trade, beside whatever the others can come up with.

I accidently rolled on Jess instead of GM earlier, I'll use that :D
