Prolog: Muntberg

#1 Post by drpete »

Your band of adventurers has come to Muntberg, a fortified village about 3 miles from the entrance to Dwimmermount. There is an old trade road that goes by the mountain, and it's reportedly well marked.

Rumors have been swirling that a number of adventuring parties have been converging on the area because something has changed.  You've heard tales of strange noises and lights on the mountain, and word that the main entrance is open.

The "village" part of Muntberg is in the walled section outside the Keep. In the "courtyard" in this picture, imagine several more buildings... You notice a Temple to Typhon near the gate and a small chapel to Tyche in the south part.  There's a market square, stable, general store, a smithy/armorer, and a few other specialty merchants, like gemsmith, moneychanger, and caravan merchant and several private houses. You all are sharing some private rooms at the mostly empty Green Dragon Inn. Across the street is the Flask and Scroll Tavern.

(You guys can assume that reasonable food/drink are covered. That includes simple fare at the tavern for breakfast and dinner, and a couple of beers. If you want fancier stuff, you can pay more, based on how well you want to live, or go a la carte. Living out of the tavern on simple fare, you're living on about 1 gp/day, but we'll assume the first week is covered)

Torgyr stands up from the table they've been nursing their ales at and stretches his back. He's of average height for his people, but not as solidly built. His slender frame is festooned with equipment, with ropes and tools hanging off his pack and belt. He is noticeably silent as he moves, despite being laden down. He's somehow managed to place items in a way that they don't clatter together. He downs the dregs of his tankard and grunts appreciatively, looking around at the others.

"Been sitting on our arses too long, friends. I'm getting stiff and sore from all this hanging around. It's about time we went and did something. Anything!"

His impatience is obvious, both in his words and in his quick, deft movements as he extricates himself from the group and heads towards the door.

"To be honest, I've not been out on much more than day trips up until now." He looks a bit sheepish. "I'm off to grab a couple more waterskins from the provisioners before we depart. Anyone else want to tag along?"

Torgyr will purchase 3 more water skins. On my phone at the moment, so I dont have the books in front of me - how much was a waterskin again?

Waterskins are 6 sp.

Muntberg is "Class V" so once we get going, buying expensive supplies here will become an issue, as will selling expensive treasures.

Solaine sips at her ale without pleasure. A few of the other patrons have turned to leer at her, only for their eyes widen in shock at the sight of her holy symbol and quickly look away. They need not worry, they will not receive the ministrations of the God of Warfare. Her mission here is too important to be concerned with the likes of them. They are indeed fools, and she pities them.

Seeing Torgyr rise, she rises as well. "I think we all might want to carry as much water as we can. You can never have too much." Especially in Dwimmermount, she thinks. It still remains to be seen if she can steer this group in that direction.

She will purchase one more waterskin.

Ranulf pushes a barmaid off his lap and rubs the 3 days of beard stubble on his face and his red eyes. "That sounds like a capital idea. Best to be moving out and seeking our fortunes and all that." He pulls out a leather coin purse and up ends it over the table. A few bits of lint and a small pebble fall out. The sellsword pick sit and examins it before dropping letting it fall to the floor. "Looks like I'm a bit light in the coffers though. Had a bad run at the tables and some of the women can be quite..encouraging." he says with a grin. "Anyone care to spot me a bit of coin until my purse is full again?"

Solaine slips Ranulf 4 gold pieces. "Stock up while you can, soldier. I have a feeling we may need it."

4 gp taken off my sheet.

"Thanks for the coin," Ranulf says, dropping them into this purse as he stands. "I'll need some time to visit the merchants and stock up, but will then be ready to go. Say..in an hour by the front gate?"

He pauses before heading out. "By the way, where are we going? Are we heading to this Dwimmermount place I've been hearing so much about? All kinds of talk and rumoors floating around abotu this place."

I'll have equipment ready later tonight, then I'll be good to go.

A mousy, brown-haired man in simple travellers garb approaches your table. He seems friendly and interested in you.

"You folks heading to "The Mountain"? Good luck! I hear that Typhon's Fist ran into trouble up there. Watch your step!"

The man laughs good-naturedly at Solaine's cautious response. He winks and taps the side of his nose, knowingly, then seats himself.

"Typhon's Fist went up a few days ago, and came back in a hurry. They ran into some skeletons that weren't very impressed by Typhon's might, and suffered some casualties. Name's Climent, by the way.

Climent holds out his hand, as if expecting to shake.

Solaine warily takes his offered hand. "Thank you for the information. We would appreciate anything else you could tell us about the mountain."

"Deed someone mention thees 'Mountain of Magic'?" asks an olive complected man in a black cassock. He strokes his pointed black goatee, clearly waxed, as he continues, "It ees, in fact, my very purpose in thees benighted little dungheap. I would join my arcane prowess with any who would venture there..."

Looking down, he appears to notice the mousy man for the first time, "Ah! But where are my manners? I deed not know you were speaking to thees...chicken farmer. Plees! Continue..."

The mousy man's eyes blaze for a moment when called a chicken farmer, then he continues, to Solaine, "I may end up a chicken farmer if my friends don't arrive soon. Is beard-y here right, you're looking for a mage for your expedition? For a little ... chicken scratch ... I'd be happy to help. An advance on my share is all I would ask."

Climent winks misceviously at Frederico as he makes the reference to chicken scratch.

Ranulf looks the scrawny man up and down. "And what exactly pray tell would you bring to the party, besides the abilty to pluck a chicken or be blown away by a stiff wind?" he says with a mischevious grin.

The dwarf and his automaton look skeptical of the man offering to join. "Now, I'm not opposed to extra help, but advancing a share is something else. We hardly know what we'll find. Shall we strike it rich or be chased of by skeletons. Maybe if you'd be willing to take a much reduced share, but ye can't just skip out on the risk.

The man holds up his hands. "Whoa, sorry... I thought your band was hiring a mage. If you're fine with this guy..." he says, motioning to Frederico. "I'm fine waiting for my friends, the Red Shields, to get here. I'll buy you a drink when you get back."

Torgyr returns from his brief foray to the merchant quarter.

"Ok, ready to go. Who's this guy?" He thumbs a question at the man addressing the group.

The man sighs. "You haven't heard of us? The Red Shields? We're an adventuring company. Like you guys, but... well, we have Red Shields... get it? I'm just waiting for them to get here, so we mount an expedition to see what's going on in "The Mountain". You've really never heard of us?"

Indeed, you have not.
