One of the other issues with fighting shin deep in brackish, foul muck is leeches, of which most of the men have found inside their boots once they get back to a dry spot. Before they can remove them though, Morwen squawks to leave them in place and let them feed. If they turn purple it means they have drunk blood infected with Ghoul Fever. Those whose leeches fall off and swim away are clear, others will need medicine.

Dwarves are stout folk though and liable to shrug off the sickness with a few pints of ale and some roast meat provided they haven't been injured directly. Bofur's claw marks are already turning purple and while he isn't affected otherwise he would do well to add some medicinal herbs to his brew later that night.

Balin is both a cleric and an alchemist and he sets about looking first at Bofur's injuries and then to the much more in-periled. He has no herbs to heal and nothing nearby presents itself. Only magic will help the two injured men.

Balin can still use his magic to help either JJh or the infantryman. Who does he pick?
Balin Alchemist [2d6]=2 No help at all and for this effect nothing he does (non-magically) will work. Its up to others.

Jing Ji-ho

"Him," Ji-ho said, pointing to the fallen infantryman. "Let us retire to the fort, perhaps Borav can help Morphin and I, as we are more used to the poison and abuse."

Would the potions be here or with Hemia?

Balin would select JJh first to aid.

As Balin goes to heal Jing Ji-ho the Easterling waves him off but the Dwarfpriest lingers enough to determine that the man will live long enough to get back to the fort but the other man is less certain to do so and he is locked in the grip of Ghoul Fever. If he dies he will rise as one of the hungry dead himself come nightfall.

But it is still morning and before the fog burns away Darfilla returns with reagents and the healing elixers they had found previously. She is sweating and exhausted from running and needs a few moments to recover. Gurav and his companions are not far behind but they are not much for running. They arrive after another 10 minutes.

In that time Jing Ji-ho is fully gripped in the paralytic action the the poison and can barely breath, but by the time the other dwarves arrive it seems to be fading and color returns to his complexion.

You now have 2 Clerics and some potions. You can use those resources here or try and return to the fort where Alchemy will be more successful.

Jing Ji-ho

As best he could, Ji-ho directed that the ailing soldier, Tomas, get whatever curing the clerics could do. He spoke weakly, but with conviction. "Darfilla, you are the alchemist. If we have time to get to the fort, and if you could better brew your work there, then let's do that. Otherwise, I'm feeling a little better but Tomas and Morphin need care. I trust you to decide well."

Keeping the potions as a last resort, as long as clerical magic and alchemical wizardy is possible.

Gurav is quick to agree with Bofur, that valiant as Tomas was, it is Jing Ji-ho's survival that is most vital to the mission. And so both resolve to bend their powers to that outcome.
It does not go well. Jing Ji-ho does yet live, but the fever is taking hold and they are spent for magic to cure Tomas.

Morwen has an alternative method, but if it fails there is no going back. Either the man will live, or he will rise as one of the undead.

You are safely back at the fort.
JJH will be ok for the day and they can try again.
Tomas, however is going to die unless you use a potion on him, or allow Morwen to try her Ravenkin cure.

The potion. If there was less risk in Morwen's cure, that would be the first choice. However, they are in the wild and Morwen is dealing with limited time and resources. He does not want her to carry that blame if she fails, and he does not want to fuel the fears of the humans if Tomas dies.

With the injured in need of rapid evacuation it nearly slips their notice that there are several, low barrows scattered across the patch of spongy earth where they were attacked. As the sun rises and dispels the mists they can see that in the many narrows furrows where water pools that some of the undead must have buried themselves in the mud there to hide from the full power of the day.

And in many of those spots are grisly finds of chewed bones, torn clothing and defiled possessions. The full extent is impossible to determine without excavating, but Morwen's keen sense for dark magic tells her a terrible ambush took place here some time ago. She keeps to herself that she will be able to extract a great deal of that foul energy for her own purposes once she has time to do so, and also that ghouls known to hoard the treasures of their victims in their lairs.

I had moment of dumb. You can use Ritual Magic to try again. It costs a shilling per attempt. Instead of Balin casting Cure he can use Protection from Evil on Tomas. This will prevent him from rising as a ghoul even if he does die, and gives him a bonus to the Save to survive to get back to the fort.

I will assume JJh values his soldier's life enough to pay the shilling.
Tomas save vs death [2d6]=7 And Tomas lives protected by the Runepriest's magic.

Your spellcaster's may now rest and try to recover SP.

Tomas recovers over the next week (a month total) automatically.

Jing Ji-ho should make 3 saves as well. If het gets 9+ before 5 or less he recovers. If he is alive at Week 3 Darfilla's cure works.

Jing Ji-ho

Still weak from the ghast poison, Ji-ho pushed himself to get fresh air and sunlight before he was fully recovered. Part of him feared that he would succumb, and there were things that needed to be said. He moved slowly but spoke to everyone who had been in the fight with the ghouls. He checked in on Tomas, and smiled as Darfilla mixed her potions. Resting one weak hand on her shoulder, he said, "You ran for help when it was needed, and your potions are helping we injured recover. Thank you, I am proud of you."

Later, resting before going back inside, he found Morphin drilling the infantry. He watched for a while, and then smiled. His voice was a little stronger, but only a little. It was enough to be heard. "Morphin, you took a blow meant for me, and I am alive because of you. Thank you, I will not forget."

Morphin

Setting up watches and helping make sure the fort could be secured were on Morphin's mind. However, the ghouls and ghasts needed to be dealt with. Morwen would probably know how to best dispose of the bodies to ensure they didn't come back. Darfilla, if she ever got a break from brewing potions, might be able to help.

He and the heavy foot took shovels to made sure everything was dug up around the undead attack. For a moment he stopped and stared at one of the recently re-dead. "Oh, that's not good."

He gave one of the lights a verbal message for Lord Jing, and then sent the runner off. If Morwen is there (Bofur there before), he will explain. "These were not here before, we would have seen them. When we first fought here, Lord Jing and others were also gravely injured, we had to stay here for weeks. Several of us patrolled around the fort, and never saw anything like this. But it gets worse."

He pointed to one of the bodies. "I met him, he was one of the travelling nomads who came here for shelter, not knowing we had taken the fort. That was in the spring. So these undead are that fresh, if that's what you call them." Calming himself a little, Morphin forced himself to talk directly to Morwen. "If you have any advice for Lord Jing or I, I'm sure he'd appreciate it. This is bad news for many reasons."

If there's treasure dug up, Morphin will ask Gurav if his kin would do the counting.

Morwen

One thing Morwen knew for certain was that there had to be quite a significant concentration of dark magic built up here to have caused those recently deceased to become ghasts and ghouls. Finding the source of it would definitely go a long way towards helping to make sure no more hungry dead rise. Still, Morwen could certainly stockpile the dark magic and use it to make 'black water' - a necromantic reagent that she could use. While it would cost money for a cleric to sanctify the area, with Morwen's plan money could be made.

As none of the dead were Raven-kin, Morwen honestly felt nothing towards them beyond wanting to help grant them peace and rid the area of their presence. She kept her knowledge of what might be able to be found to herself, though she did make it a point to inform Morphin that an ambush must have taken place here, meaning that there is most likely a lair or two in the vicinity. Morwen takes it upon herself to both cast 'Detect Magic' (in order to locate any magical items and/or sources), and to send Macnav on a quick sweep of the Barrows to see if he can find any unawakened hungry dead that they might still need to clear out.

Morphin

Morphin nodded when Morwen spoke. It was easy to see that he was ill at ease speaking about such things, but most humans were. "I need to report to Lord Jing, if you would care to join me I am sure you could answer his questions better than I."

Once the initial digging was done, Morphin led everyone back to the fort to clean up any ghoul/ghast residue and then he went to speak with Lord Jing. Morwen's invite was open, should she wish to join.

Macnav leaves his heavier gear behind and alights across the marshy ground with ease using his wings to make incredible leaps.

"I count six open barrows for six ghasts, my lady," he reports, "It must have been they who turned these others."

He points the locations out so Morwen can target her detection magic. The ritual is quicker than usual due to the recent release of necromancy and she expends fewer reagents than she is able to collect. The barrows that have opened are clustered with one being larger than the others and it is in that largest barrow that Morwen detects the presence of enchanted objects. It is from there as well that the currents of dark magic have spread out over the others.

The only ordained clergy of the Lawgiver in the party is Hemia, and she is not present, having gone back to Borderton. So for now a proper funeral will have to wait. In the interim the only option is to allow the necromancer to draw out and tame the foul energy of this place while the Dwarven clerics perform cleansing rites on the bodies they find or to burn them. The second suggestion is not in keeping with local tradition, but it is expedient and no one doubts that Darfilla can conduct a proper way about it.

To Bofur this area looks like a vein rich in treasures. The wet ground and moving undead have no doubt spread any grave goods over a wide area and his prospector's eye knows just where to start panning.

Word of DM: There's no more danger in this encounter. The characters don't know that so they are cautious but they meet no resistance.
I assume patrol continue, though perhaps with more caution after the mists clear each morning. Thus it takes 2 more days after the ghoul fight.

Clearing Land Encounter Hex 2 [1d6]=5 Clear
Clearing Land Encounter Hex 3 [1d6]=1 Clear
Clearing Land Encounter Hex 4 [1d6]=4 Clear
Clearing Land Encounter Hex 5 [1d6]=4 Clear
The 5 sqmi around the fort are now cleared. So long as they are patrolled no Lairs will occur inside that area. You now roll on the 'Inhabited' tables which are much less punishing in general for random encounters at the fort.

Bofur can survey the area by rolling his Prospector Skill.
Morwen can harness the dark magic by rolling Scholar Skill.
Morphin is the current commander of the garrison. His Soldier skill can be rolled at -2 to organize patrols.
