Re: [004] A Call to Retribution

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the implications for Satake Motoyuki. While he has a personal stake in this due to what happened to Satake Taka, he has to take care how to act considering his station. He also doesn't want to bring dishonor to his daimyo. So it seems like he has to be elsewhere and visible and only engage more directly once there is a thread of evidence that would justify his pulling that thread in investigation to develop enough evidence to bring to the daimyo.

Keiso is a Buddhist priest so probably also has to stand back from the ambush until there is more evidence.

Unless I'm misunderstanding...

Taka takes time to gather the herbs only found in the mountains of Nippon. With her one task-week of free time, she can compound them into one drug (1095.5 DRUGS AND HERBALISM) or poison (1095.4 POISON) of her choice. Drugs are well-known to her and she doesn't need a BCS. If she chooses to design a poison, she makes an Herbalism BCS to make a level 1 Poison with it being a level higher for every 4 Effect. Either way, she gets 2d3 doses of the compound she makes.

Taka prays at the statue. Treat it as a social test - roll your helping skills applied, then your social BCS for general society and tell me your final result.

You have done these things and set up the ambush halfway to Kiyomaru; you do not have time to therefore visit Kiyomaru before the attack.

Daitaro Amano can benefit from one week's tutoring from Taka as a mentor to open his own Herbalism skill. (If you don't mind calculating the math yourself and posting it.)

Saizo proves his worth as the only one with the mind for preparing clandestine and dishonorable action. He sees daily wagon traffic at Makoto's compound and decides two things - first, that the man really does have a lively and lucrative life as a successful merchant, and second that the guards that accompany every wagon are obviously trained Yakuza thugs. They're not mounted and dress as Ashigaru guards with wakizashis or as regular merchants with concealed weapons for when thuggishness is required. He is able to solidify that the local ninja clan has a high-ranking on close contract to Makoto, implying that he at least is Makoto's ally. He discerns nothing else about the ninja clan, which maintains its secrecy more closely than could be unwravelled without his direct time and attention.

Saizo lays out a clear plan to his companions. (I need everyone else to place yourself within it, then I'll open the interdiction scene.)

Zanrin trains alone in naginatajutsu. (I think that's just normal learning rate - please check and calculate and post the result.)

Satake Motoyuki contemplates his station. He cannot declare a blood feud because Taka is, after all, still alive. They arrive at the plan to gather evidence, or perhaps confession, that will convince the Daimyo of the serious crime of treason by Makoto. Such a plan is dishonorable, however, and it would impact him greatly to be directly involved. He makes a plan to rejoin his companions at the signal that the job is complete and returns to handle duties of court so he has a plausible alibi.

At court, Motoyuki finds much consternation about the peasants, who are more fiery than most of the court finds reasonable for the current conditions. They speculate many rumors of what may be inflaming them, none of them with evidence. Of equal concern, however, is the Daimyo's silence. The Daimyo remains in his chambers and makes only two appearances at all, and those are just to be seen and not to hear cases or make rulings. Motoyuki suspects the Daimyo is concealing some illness, and others whisper of it, too... a time of weakness for the Daimyo is a problem for the province.

Keiso considers his vows. He must avoid needless violence and avoid killing for any reason or he will be in sin. He is skilled in subduing rather than causing mortal harm, but he ponders. Is this violence needful? He must advise their course.

Could Motoyuki call on Keiso and possibly see the Daimyo?

Keiso is glad the attempt is to capture the brother for questioning so that is less violence, and perhaps the least violent way to gain more information, however, it still seems above the level of violent Keiso is comfortable committing to. It seems like waiting nearby to swoop in to heal anyone that might need healing would be tacit acceptance that violence is about to commence, though perhaps that is the Buddhist way, not to initiate violence but to be prepared to mitigate the damage when violence inevitably breaks out. If that seems reasonable, Keiso will wait far enough to not get drawn into the violence, yet close enough to be on call should his services be necessary. Clearly the others are committed to this path with Motoyuki abstaining from a sense of honor separate from a sense of not commencing violence.

Zenrin spent the week practicing naginatajutsu with no teacher. His Learning Rate is 2, so I believe he goes from naginatajutsu 65 to 67 in one week.

Roll at the Tenjin shrine to know more about Tenjin. Theology skill 0, BCS 1. [1d20]=18 No good.

You play both Motoyuki and Keiso, so they can talk as much as you like. :)

You know you will not be able to gain audience with the Daimyo in the timeframe before this action. That is abnormal, because you normally would be able to request an audience, and it signals something is out of the ordinary. If you wish to talk to other bureaucrats you may - they're busier than usual handling all the Daimyo's business for him, but still accessable.

Previous answer was the by-the-book rules...
Keiso considers his vows. He must avoid needless violence and avoid killing for any reason or he will be in sin. He is skilled in subduing rather than causing mortal harm, but he ponders. Is this violence needful?
One thing about Buddhism (to expand further) is that it is intensely personal - you are responsibly karmically for only your own actions.
If you tried to stop a murder and killed the assailant, you are guilty of murder, period. No manslaughter justification or justifiable homicide concepts. In this case, that means Keiso can advise his companions but he is not then responsible for their violence. It is perfectly fine for him to stand aside, defend himself non-lethally if necessary, and heal them afterwards. That's kind of what the game expects. Your moral judgment is on "needful violence" that allows you to be more proactive...

For Zanrin: Sounds good!

OK, Motoyuki will seek to talk to the other bureaucrats about the Daimyo while avoiding interfering too much with their work. If there is something he can help with he will offer his help in exchange.

Keiso will advise the others about the moral perils of violence, and then will stand aside, prepared to defend himself.

Okay, Motoyuki is in a separate scene, then. He helps the bureaucrats to ingratiate himself then gets them talking about the Daimyo. His personal status BCS is 5. He will get a +5 BCS for "mutually beneficial" scenario. He can roll his BCS 8 Rhetoric and add/subtract the effect number. If you roleplay the context of the help being either relating to a hunt (tori-oi) or strategic deployment (senjo-jutsu) you can also roll one of those skills and add/subtract the effect number. Go ahead and roleplay to set the scene.

Is Keiso visible at the shrine or bridge or hidden in the woods?

Anything for Daitaro Amano and Satake Taka?

...anything else before we move to the encounter?

One of the "flaws" I see with Bushido is it isn't worth using a skill to modify BCS unless the skill is > BCS 10. It looks like it can be worth it if your BCS is very low and the other skill is sufficiently higher.

Motoyuki will just be of general assistance, not attempting to assert any particular skill.

Keiso will be hidden in the woods.

Taka

Taka finds the materials needed to create a mild stimulant in abundant supply and prepares small packets of herbs wrapped in thin string that she places in a small pouch beneath her clothes at her waste. She carries it back to the group and finds opportunities to individually give the bushi a share of one herbal packet each with instructions for its use.

Taka makes an offering at the statue.

Could you elaborate on the social test roll? It seems like Za-zen (meditation) BCS 2 is the most relevant skill and Taka's status BCS is 4, which I have rolled high against.

Taka Herbal Compound [2d3]=4
Taka Prayer [1d20]=7
Taka Social Status [1d20]=16

Daitaro Amano

Daitaro finds the highest point at the site of the planned ambush with a view to the bridge and the road in the direction they anticipate the arriving persons and stages 4 arrows point down in the soil to be easily retrieved and nocked to his readied bow.

Jemmus - I need a link for Kamine no Zenrin's sheet. :)

In the Court of the Daimyo
As weeks pass, the summer heat brings growing discontent in Takayama and throughout the Hido province. Normal grumbling about the coming harvest, the lack of rain, and the imposition of taxes has increased fervor, pervading the merchant classes and extending into the farmers and laborers who bring their grain to the city's markets. Dangerous talk about the need for change is no longer an anomaly - the mood of the city is tense. At the same time, the Daimyo is silent. Others speak on his behalf, but he has not done anything to quell the growing mood.
Rumors escape the palace, boiling through the chatty commoners faster than the summer heat. The Daimyo, Washima Fuhito has not been since by the populace since his return from Toyama City in Etchu province about a month ago.

Satake Motoyuki seeks audience with the Daimyo and confirms that the Daimyo is not making customary appearances. He is a Bushi, not a petty bureaucrat, but his weight as a Satake carries certain gravitas and his interventions help ease the burdens on the harried and frazzled bureaucrats. Having gained some trust, he is entrusted to their gossip even if formal audience remains beyond him still.

"I have heard, it is from the porters, that the Daimyo never returned from Toyama. It cannot be said why, but he said the Lord's kaga was empty when he saw into it as they entered the city."

"Nonsense! He is in his bed! The washer woman says he sweats through his sheets nightly. They whisper... they whisper of his screaming." The second man swallows hard. "His strength and color are drained in the night attacks."

"There is disturbance... strange omens in the Hida-sanmyaku, the mountains to the southeast," says the third solemnly. "The poor timing of the Daimyo's illness cannot be coincidence when the flocks of sparrows fly thus."

"You are superstitious," chides the fourth, though making a subtle gesture to the kami for protection. "I heard from those on the journey with him that he quarreled with Mizobara Yoshisuke, the lord of Toyama. They fought and the Daimyo was wounded. War may break out because of the incident..."

Motoyuki is certain that, should he get favorable evidence, that it will sway them to back his attendance to those doing the Daimyo's work. The confirmation that the Daimyo remains either missing or indisposed, combined with the rising discontent among the people, is dangerous indeed.
Okay, Motoyuki is in a separate scene, then. He helps the bureaucrats to ingratiate himself then gets them talking about the Daimyo. His personal status BCS is 5. The Shrine of Tenjin

Image
The Tenjin Shrine consists of a small dais and a solemn carved statue, untended and struggling against the overgrowth of vines. Small gifts of passing pilgrims, some fresh and new, some decaying in the elements, rest on the forward edge of the dais.
Satake Taka makes her offerings at the shrine, meditating and praying to Tenjin. She feels nothing, however, as the shrine remains just a stone statue by the road.

Undeterred, Taka rises and returns to her companions with small, mincing steps. Taka offers Daitaro, Zenrin, Saizo (keeping the fourth herself) each a small packet of ground and prepared herbs, bound with an inert ingredient into a soft, gummy losenge. She explains it is a stimulant that will aid them if the battle is stiff.
Stimulant Cost: 5 Silver/Dose Level: 1
The initial Dose has the following effects:
  • Heals 1D6 of current Subdual damage.
  • +1 to Base Action Phase
  • +1 to all Physical Attribute Saving Throws.
  • —1 to all Mental Attribute Saving Throws.
The effects of this initial Dose last 1D3 hours. Once the initial Dose wears off, the character takes 1D6 of Subdual damage and may not safely use the drug again until he has had a good night's sleep.

The Kidnapping of Shoshen Kogataro
Saizo survails the mansion of Shoshen Makoto for the return of his son. It takes about two weeks before Shoshen Kogataro returns, reporting in to his father. There is a flurry of activity in the courtyards of the estate with wagons being loaded with goods - some by day and some under cover of night. As the wagons are finally mostly full, you find indication that Kogataro will go to consult the wizard on the next day, then return to accompany the wagons onward to their destination. You know you must execute your plan now or wait another month before an opportunity may occur again...

Tenjin Shrine Fight #1.JPG
Tenjin Shrine Fight #1.JPG (132.6 KiB) Viewed 744 times
Saizo, the only one clearly skilled at this sort of ambush and subterfuge, arranges the others for the kidnapping which is about to come. He conceals himself at the edge of the bridge.

Amano Daitaro finds the highest point at the site of the planned ambush with a view to the bridge and the road in the direction they anticipate the arriving persons and stages 4 arrows point down in the soil to be easily retrieved and nocked to his readied bow.

Kamine no Zenrin is ready with his long pole-blade, concealed in the tree line just north of the road. Satake Taka conceals herself on the south side, just on the far side of the shrine, in case her magic is needed. Keiso advises the others about the moral perils of violence, and then stands aside, resting casually on the steps of the shrine.

The sound of hooves and the cloud of dust can be seen a ways off, giving about 20 minutes warning before the small cluster of travellers trundles into view. Kogataro walks at the front, leading the cluster of guardsmen and the wagon with its two horses, making their way towards the outlying village to see the wizard, as you expected. Besides the driver on the cart, there are four other men, wary and serving as guards. They wear heavy travelling garments (AC 2) and each walks confidently, hand upon his sheathed wakizashi.

As Kogataro crosses the sturdy wooden bridge, the grinding wheels of the wagon drum-like as they rumble onto the wooden planking, he spies Keiso praying quietly at the shrine and raises a hand to slow his men. He smirks, perhaps a glint of vicious intent in his eye, as they move slower across the bridge towards the humble monk.

Tell me how this trap springs. Whomever goes first gets a free action for surprise, then we will begin into turn order and everyone declares their first actions.

I'm not quite sure what Motoyuki's next action should be, continue to help the bureaucrats in hopes of more specific information? Can he seek audience with the daimyo?

I thought Keiso was hiding in the woods, not at the shrine...

Motoyuki is intentionally not in the main scene; I think he is just paused until it's conclusion. The update for him above addresses getting audience with the Daimyo (i.e. you are set as soon as you have evidence to present) and fulsome rumors from the bureaucrats.

Sorry I missed that - I placed Keiso at the shrine as the distraction to allow someone else to get surprise. If you want him to hide in the woods I can retcon that and look up how surprise actually works. :)

The intent was for Keiso to not immediately or directly be involved in the ambush. But if the other players think it would be good to use him praying as a distraction, I think that could work within his Buddhist tenets.

Zen monk Zenrin, defender of the Buddha's temple and believers, finds himself in the woods, about to ambush a yakuza. He cannot guess how the causation of karma and law of dharma have converged the parties in this point in space and time. It is not for him to judge.

When the merchant and first guard have passed by, the sohei steps forward and swiftly snaps the long blade of his naginata at his target.

Attacking the yakuza on the north side of the wagon. BCS 17, + 5 side attack = 22. -1 for Second Strike = 21. If target is surprised, +1, = 22.[1d20]=1 Damage [2d6+2]=6+2=8 Crit success [1d10]=4 Triple damage.

Butt stroke (second strike) - BCS 1/2 = 10 or 11, depending on if the yakuza was surprised. [1d20]=11 Damage [1d3+2]=1+2=3

I am allowing Saizo a surprise round (not a Bushido thing, allowed because Taisho chose to be distracting bait.) for his first attack. I then will begin the Turn Order count for resolution.
- I will use Saizo's primary action for his first Turn order, he can specify his additional actions in the round.
- I think Zenrin is good. I still need his character sheet.
- I need actions for Amano Daitaro, Satake Taka, and Keiso.

Keiso will look up from his praying if disturbed. If it looks like he is being threatened, he will raise his bo in defensive posture.

Sorry, I kept forgetting about the char sheet. It's posted in the Character sheets thread. Will post Saizo's next actions a little later.

Saizo quickly skips to the left for a better shot at the entangled yakuza. He whips the weight at the end of his thin chain.

Manrikigusari entangle attack, BC 13 + 10 rear facing = 23. (If still the rear facing. The yakuza was attacked from the rear and entangled, and has 12 restrictions. I don't know whether he'd be able to change facing. I can't find a rule about that).
Saizo's second action is Primary, because of Zanshin 2. BCS 13 or 23. [1d20]=20 [1d5]=1 Critical failure.
If BCS was 23, then it's just a regular miss. (1051.2) If it was 13 (or anything less than 20), there's a special effect.
[1d20]=15 14-15 Attacker falls down and suffers a Stun Special Effect. From the Critical Success table:
Stunned. Target foreits any Available Action Phases
remaining in that Detailed Turn and all on the next Detailed
Turn. The target is considered Passive during this time and
loses any benefits for Defense

Saizo's third action for this turn would be lost.

If no critical failure special effect, here's Saizo's third action. It's secondary, so at half BCS (BCS 16 or 6). [1d20]=11 [1d5]=1
