{GM}

As the larger part of the party exits the plane, they find themselves in a large open hanger. Aside from Misty, Basil’s plane, they see two large VTOL planes and four helicopters. Floor-to-ceiling vehicle doors at the back of the hanger suggest that move aircraft may be stored in the facility.

Just 15 or 20 paces beyond the bottom of the stairs stands El Brigadier and the small entourage they had seen from the plane’s window. The Hispanic dwarf Ace had called Security 1 holds a scanning wand and runs it up and down Ace’s body quite a bit more casually than Randall’s men had. Basil stands to the side talking to the elven woman Ace identified as Management 3. Presumably, Basil has already been scanned. He has left his cane behind. About 15 other people are stationed throughout the hangar. They are spread out, presumably to go about varied tasks, but most are watching the newcomers – some discreetly, others with open interest.

El Brigadier waves a hand towards a large metahuman-sized door. From this distance, it’s hard to be sure, but it looks like it is built more or less to Ork scale. El Cid will have to stoop, but it will still be a lot more comfortable to go through than most human-proportioned doors.

“¿Por qué no vamos tú y yo a mi oficina, hijo?” El Brigadier says. “Para que podamos discutir esta situación y qué se puede hacer para que Nuevo Refugio obtenga una compensación.”

Ace shakes his head. “Lo siento. No puedo hacer eso, señor.”

“¿Disculpe?” El Brigadier snaps in a tone that suggests he’s not used to having his suggestions questioned, let alone argued with.

Management 3 whips her head around away from Basil. "Le dije, señor, cómo deberíamos manejar a la Araña y sus invitados."

“Ésta es una cuestión militar, no una cuestión de gestión,” El Brigadier barks in almost exactly the same tone he just used with Ace. Apparently, he doesn’t like his own people’s dissention any more than he does Ace’s. “Usted se encarga del papeleo. Yo me encargaré del incidente.”

“Sí, señor,” Management 3 replies as crisply as any soldier. She cuts her eyes hard at Ace before turning back to Basil. From the heat in that brief glance, Ace’s comment about her not being his supporter was an understatement.

El Brigadier focuses his stern expression back on Ace. “¿Por qué no?”

“Porque le di mi juramento.” Ace says, meeting El Brigadier’s gaze levelly, his expression as dispassionate as though he were sitting at a poker table.

“No juegues conmigo, hijo,” El Brigadier says. “No tengo paciencia para ellos esta mañana.”

“No estoy jugando, señor,” Ace says, keeping his tone calm and level, pitched softly so as not to echo in this large chamber. “Todo menos. Por teléfono le prometí que las nueve personas que llevaba conmigo no le causarían problemas, no le harían daño a Nueva Refugio y guardarían silencio sobre este lugar. No puedo hacer eso si estoy atrapado en su oficina mientras ellos están cenando, ¿verdad?”

“No, supongo que no puedes,” El Brigadier admits, his bristling lessening marginally.

“Entonces, a menos que quieras mencionarlos a todos conmigo mientras...” Ace pauses and switches to English for just a moment. “Read me in…” He shifts back to Spanish. “‘¿Leerme en?’ Lo siento. No sé si el modismo se aplica en español. Mientra usted…” He pauses, considering his words. “Dame detalles... detalles operativos.” The spider spreads his hands wide. “Perdone mi presunción, pero asumí que cualquier operación que quisiera discutir sería necesaria para conocerla. Dado que la cantidad de huevos necesarios y la marca de cereal para el desayuno que prefieren los lugareños se considera un Alto Secreto por aquí.” He chuckles.

El Brigadier does not. “Cualquier cosa que pueda dar información sobre nuestros números es un secreto muy bien guardado, hijo.”

“Lo sé,” Ace says, throwing his hands up in a placating gesture. “Por eso supuse que no querrías… informarme… con ellos cerca. Lo siento. Eso tendrá que esperar hasta que el negocio actual en el que estoy involucrado haya concluido y haya manejado ese otro asunto en Seattle que mencioné por teléfono. Después de eso, Nuevo Refugio tiene el primer derecho a reclamar mis servicios hasta que haya cumplido con mis obligaciones para con usted, señor.”

El Brigadier stands silent a moment. Then he nods. "¿Y supongo que preferirías que no te regañara delante de tus socios comerciales como si fueras un colegial travieso?"

Ace shrugs and flips his hands palms up. “En este momento la opinión que mi compañero tenga sobre mí es la menor de mis preocupaciones, El Brigadier,” he says. “Si necesita desahogarle…” Again he switches to English for a moment. “That’s another one, sir. I don’t know if it means the same thing in Spanish. ‘Get it off your chest.’ Does it?” He switches back to Spanish. “Para decirme en términos claros cómo te sientes, te escucharé sin protestar... Bueno, al menos sin más protestas de las absolutamente necesarias para preservar una pizca de dignidad.” He holds up a hand, palms forward. “Solo, primero déjame encargarme de las finanzas.” He says. “No quisiera retrasar a Administración más de lo necesario.”

“Why don’t you and I take a walk up to my office, son.” El Brigadier says. “So we can discuss this situation, and what you can do for Nuevo Refugio to make amends.”

Ace shakes his head. “I’m sorry. I can’t do that, sir.”

“Excuse me?” El Brigadier snaps in a tone that suggests he’s not used to having his suggestions questioned, let alone argued with.

Management 3 whips her head around away from Basil. “I told you, sir, how we should handle the Spider and his guests.”

“This is a Military matter, not a Management one,” El Brigadier barks in almost exactly the same tone he just used with Ace. Apparently, he doesn’t like his own people’s dissention any more than he does Ace’s. “You handle the paperwork. I will handle the incident.”

“Yes, sir,” Management 3 replies as crisply as any soldier. She cuts her eyes hard at Ace before turning back to Basil. From the heat in that brief glance, Ace’s comment about her not being his supporter was an understatement.

El Brigadier focuses his stern expression back on Ace. “Why not?”

“Because I gave you my word,” Ace says, meeting El Brigadier’s gaze levelly, his expression as dispassionate as though he were sitting at a poker table.

“Don’t play games with me, son.” El Brigadier says. “I have no patience for them this morning.”

“I’m not playing games, sir,” Ace says, keeping his tone calm and level, pitched softly so as not to echo in this large chamber. “Anything but. On the phone, I promised you that the nine people I was bringing with me would cause you no trouble, would do no harm to Nueva Refugio, and would keep silent about this place. I can’t very well do that if I’m tucked away in your office while they are off getting dinner, now can I?”

“No, I suppose you can’t,” El Brigadier admits, his bristling lessening marginally.

“So unless you want to bring all of them up with me while you…” Ace pauses and switches to English for just a moment. “Read me in…” He shifts back to Spanish. “I’m sorry. I don’t know if the idiom carries over in Spanish. While you…” He pauses, considering his words. “Give me specifics… operational details.” The spider spreads his hands wide. “Forgive my presumption, but I just assumed any operation you wanted to discuss would be need-to-know. Since around here, the number of eggs needed and the brand of breakfast cereal the locals prefer are considered Top Secret.” He chuckles.

El Brigadier does not. “Anything that could give intel as to our numbers is a closely guarded secret, son.”

“I know,” Ace says, throwing his hands up in a placating gesture. “Which is why I assumed you wouldn’t want to… brief me… with them around. I’m sorry. That will have to wait until the current business I’m involved in has concluded, and I’ve handled that other matter back in Seattle I mentioned on the phone. After that, Nuevo Refugio has first claim on my services until I’ve fulfilled my obligations to you, sir.”

El Brigadier stands silent a moment. Then he nods. “And I suppose you’d prefer it if I didn’t scold you in front of your business associates like you were a naughty school boy?”

Ace shrugs and flips his hands palms up. “Right about now my companion’s opinion of me is the least of my concerns, El Brigadier,” he says. “If you need to get it off your chest…” Again he switches to English for a moment. “That’s another one, sir. I don’t know if it means the same thing in Spanish. ‘Get it off your chest.’ Does it?” He switches back to Spanish. “To tell me in no uncertain terms how you feel, I will listen without protest… Well, without more protest than absolutely necessary to preserve some shred of dignity, anyway.” He holds up a hand, palms forward. “Just let me handle the finances, first.” He says. “Wouldn’t want to keep Management longer than necessary.”

El Brigadier nods his permission, and Ace walks over to where Basil and Management 3 are still talking, leaving the away crew alone with Nuevo Refugio’s leader.

El Cid considers saying more, but given the situation, remaining silent until asked directly may be prudent.
"If you need to scold Mr. Ace in front of us, you may do so. So long as Ace is unharmed, it will not impinge on our business with Ace."

El Brigadier takes his eyes off of Ace’s retreating back to meet El Cid’s.

“No necesitas preocuparte por la Araña mientras esté aquí dentro de Nuevo Refugio.. Él es más valioso para nosotros libre y completo. Reconozco esto. Management 3 lucha por verlo. Ella es joven.” He shakes his head. “No, el peligro no llegará hasta que él se vaya de aquí.”

El Brigadier sighs. “Habla bien de ti que hablas para defender a un amigo. Pero tenga cuidado con los nombres aquí. Pocos los usan y la mayoría se siente incómodo si lo hace. Ace es conocido por su nombre.. Pero aún así, la mayoría lo llama la Araña. Te sugiero que hagas lo mismo mientras permanezcas en Nuevo Refugio”.

“You do not need to worry about the Spider as long as he is here within Nuevo Refugio. He is more valuable to us free and whole. I recognize this. Management 3 struggles to see it. She is young.” He shakes his head. “No, the danger will not come until he leaves here.”

El Brigadier sighs. “It speaks well of you that you speak up to defend a friend. But be wary of names here. Few use them, and most are uncomfortable if you do. Ace is known by name. But still, most call him the Spider. I would suggest you do as well while you remain in Nuevo Refugio.”

"I apologize. He told us about the use of names here, but not how they he was known here." El Cid replies. "I have worked with the Spider off an on for a year. He has been good to me." El Cid looks around the hanger. "The elevator landing pad is very impressive."

“Me alegro de que la Araña al menos haya recordado repasar nuestras reglas y convenciones.” El Brigadier snorts. “Incluso si él mismo los ha olvidado.” Nodding, he said, “Me complace que él haya seguido asesorando a otros. Lo animé a hacerlo cuando tenía más o menos tu edad, tal vez un poco más joven. Con sus habilidades sociales, la Araña es un líder natural. Podrían haberlo metido en serios problemas si no los hubiera canalizado de manera positiva.”

El Brigadier nods. “Mi predecesor fue un ingeniero brillante. Su visión de este lugar ha salvado muchas vidas y ha sido invaluable para la causa.”

“I’m glad that the Spider at least remembered to go over our rules and conventions.” El Brigadier snorts. “Even if he has forgotten them himself.” Nodding, he says, “I’m pleased that he has continued to mentor others. I encouraged him to that when he was about your age, maybe a little younger. With his social skills, the Spider is a natural leader. They could have gotten him into serious trouble without channeling them in a positive way.”

El Brigadier nods. “My predecessor was a brilliant Engineer. His vision for this place has saved a lot of lives and been invaluable to the cause.”

Most of the work in the hanger seems like routine maintenance and cleaning. Pairs and trios of people of mixed metatypes but primarily Hispanic descent work on each of the vehicles. Others seem to be cleaning and organizing the hanger itself. Several people continue to watch the newcomers with open curiosity. Though Revs can’t get a close look at each team’s work, it feels a lot like the purposeful bustle in his own family’s garage.

El Brigadier turns his attention from El Cid to the group at large. “Welcome to Nuevo Refugio. I am El Brigadier, and I am responsible for this base.” His voice booms across the hanger, pitched to be heard by everyone within as he speaks in fluent English, heavily accented with Aztlan tones.

“Please be patient as Security makes sure you are bringing nothing forbidden into our home. All weapons, no matter how small, are forbidden to outsiders while you visit Nuevo Refugio as are any communication devices. If you have brought any with you, return to your plane and leave them or remain within. Should you need to contact anyone outside this base, see me or see Management, and we will arrange secure communications if it is possible at the time.”

”We ask that you either remain on your plane or restrict yourselves to the Concourse, Temporary Residential, or the Food Center. We do not know you well enough to give you access to the rest of the complex. If you have any questions about these expectations, your status, or anything else about your stay in Nuevo Refugio, please ask now before any incident can strain relations.”

El Brigadier nods. “That’s why I brought it up now, before you left the area,” he says. “I wasn’t sure how thoroughly the Spider had explained the protocols, but given the large one he violated today, I thought it best if I made sure.”

I have just explained this to your companion,” he inclines his head towards El Cid. “But we here at Nuevo Refugio do not generally use names, not even street names. Everyone here is a fugitive from Aztlan in general and most are hiding from Aztechnology itself. That now includes you. Whether or not you are a friend to the cause, if the Aztlan authorities were ever to learn that you have been here, should you be taken into custody, you would be delivered to the Jaguar Guard and subject to drugs, torture, and blood magic, so they could learn our location. Please keep that in mind before you breathe word of Nuevo Refugio to anyone.”

“That’s good to hear. For now,” El Brigadier says, “Just stay in the designated sections and stay out of trouble.”

Having finished their business with Management, Ace and Basil make their way over to the group.

El Brigadier turns a stern gaze on Ace. “Ahora bien, hijo, ¿entiendes qué es lo peor que has hecho para dañar a Nuevo Refugio?”

Ace’s shoulders tense. He grimaces. He takes in a sharp breath through his nose and lets it go. Eyes cast on his shoes, he nods. Deliberately raising his head and meeting El Brigadier’s eyes, he says, “Sí, el Brigadier. Lo sé, señor.”

“¿De verdad, hijo?” El Brigadier asks in a tone a parent might use for a sulky tween. “Dime.”

Ace winces again. He closes his eyes and takes a long, slow breath. Opening his eyes, he squares his shoulders. “Les conté a mis compañeros sobre este lugar antes de pedir y recibir su permiso… señor.”

El Brigadier nods. “¿Y por qué fue esto peor que traer a nueve extraños?”

Ace lets out a huff of air. “Porque le forcé la mano, señor. Una vez que supiste que estas nueve personas conocían Nuevo Refugio, no te quedó más remedio que aceptar dejarnos aterrizar.”

“¿Sabías lo que estabas haciendo en ese momento?” El Brigadier asks. “¿O se te ocurrió eso después del hecho?”

Still meeting El Brigadier’s eyes directly, Ace says, “Lo sabía, señor. Fue deliberado. No podía correr el riesgo de que nos rechazaras. No teníamos otras opciones, señor.”

“Explícamelo,” El Brigadier says. “Quiero saber por qué no pensó que podía presentarme su difícil situación y confiar en mí para tomar una decisión humana.”

Ace shakes his head.

“Mierda,” Ace mutters under his breath. He casts his eyes heavenwards and draws another long, slow breath.

When El Brigadier finally finishes grilling Ace, the rebel leader asks Ace, “Entonces, ¿qué vamos a hacer al respecto, hijo?”

Ace gives a snort that borders on a harsh laugh. “¿Qué? ¿La multa que acabo de pagar y nueve favores de la naturaleza y tiempo que elijas que probablemente me costarán un año de mi vida a menos que me maten primero? ¿Eso no es suficiente?” He shrugs and spreads his hands wide and palms up. “No lo sé, señor. Si estabas pensando en pedirme juramento de que nunca más lo volveré a hacer, no puedo dártelo. Como dije, en el mismo tipo de situación, lo haría de nuevo. Con mi vida y la de varios otros en juego, haría lo que fuera necesario para ponernos a salvo.”

With another shrug, Ace says, “Simplemente haga lo que va a hacer, señor.” He shakes his head. “No voy a discutir.”

Ace snorts again and gives a wry grin. Shaking his head, he asks, “Entonces, ¿estoy suspendido de Entretenimiento, señor? Eso duele, El Brigadier. Pero acepto tu criterio.”

“Compórtate mientras estás aquí, hijo,” El Brigadier says. “Y ve que tus compañeros también lo hagan. Son tu responsabilidad, Araña.”

“Sí, señor,” Ace says. “Comprendido.”

El Brigadier turns a stern gaze on Ace. “Now then, son, do you understand what the worst thing you’ve done to wrong Nuevo Refugio is?”

Ace’s shoulders tense. He grimaces. He takes in a sharp breath through his nose and lets it go. Eyes cast on his shoes, he nods. Deliberately raising his head and meeting El Brigadier’s eyes, he says, “Yes, El Brigadier. I know, sir.”

“Do you, son?” El Brigadier asks in a tone a parent might use for a rebellious tween. “Tell me.”

Ace winces again. He closes his eyes and takes a long, slow breath. Opening his eyes, he squares his shoulders. “I told my companions about this place before I asked for and received your permission… sir.”

El Brigadier nods. “And why was this worse than actually bringing in nine strangers?”

Ace lets out a huff of air. “Because I forced your hand, sir. Once you knew that these nine people knew of Nuevo Refugio, you had no choice other than to agree to let us land.”

“Did you know what you were doing at the time?” El Brigadier asks. “Or did that occur to you after the fact?”

Still meeting El Brigadier’s eyes directly, Ace says, “I knew, sir. It was deliberate. I couldn’t take the chance you would refuse us. We had no other options, sir.”

“Explain that to me,” El Brigadier says. “I want to know why you didn’t think you could present your plight to me and trust me to make the humane decision.”

Ace shakes his head. “Anything I say will sound like making excuses. It would be true, but I’m not going to try to excuse my actions. I did what I did. I will accept the consequences. I don’t need to waste your time with the reasons that brought me to that point, reasons that you may or may not agree are valid. But even if I had known in advance the debt you have claimed in recompense, I would do it again, El Brigadier.”

“You always have been a stubborn rebel, Spider,” El Brigadier says, “I don’t care whether or not you think your reasons sound like excuses. I will hear them.”

“Drek,” Ace mutters under his breath. He casts his eyes heavenwards and draws another long, slow breath. “Sir, to start with, I don’t have my phone. I had no way to contact you without explaining to someone that I needed to borrow a phone…”

Ace goes on to explain about all of the shadow ports that turned them down, the fuel situation, the inability to stay airborne until Ambrose passes, the distance to Atlanta. Under El Brigadier’s ruthless, incessant questioning, Ace explains that he had not slept for three and a half days and rested only six hours after that. He talks about his discomfort with flying and how that affected his sleep. He mentions that he needed to ask the pilot if a landing here was even possible before trying to contact Nuevo Refugio. Ace explains that he is not the leader of this team, so he needed to run the idea by the leader before talking to El Brigadier. Ace presents everything as facts, makes no attempt to appeal to El Brigadier’s emotions or to ask for leniency. Through creative wording, Ace manages to avoid saying anything that would give away his status as Gumberoo’s prisoner.

When El Brigadier finally finishes grilling Ace, the rebel leader asks Ace, “So, what are we going to do about this, son?”

Ace gives a snort that borders on a harsh laugh. “What? The fine I just paid and 9 favors of a nature and time of your choosing that will likely cost me a year of my life unless they kill me first? That isn’t enough?” He shrugs and spreads his hands wide and palms up. “I don’t know, sir. If you were thinking of asking for my word that I will never do it again, I can’t give it. As I said, in the same sort of situation, I would do it again. With my life and that of several others at stake, I would do whatever it took to get us to safety.”

With another shrug, Ace says, “Just do what you’re going to do, sir.” He shakes his head. “I’m not going to argue.”

El Brigadier nods. “Your rebellion, as unusual, comes from your convictions,” he says, “And you are honest about your motivation. The service already incurred is sufficient. You and your guests are free to use the Concourse, Temporary Residential, or the Food Center.”

Ace snorts again and gives a wry grin. Shaking his head, he asks, “So, I’m grounded from Entertainment, sir? That hurts, El Brigadier. But I accept your judgment.”

“Behave yourself while you’re here, son,” El Brigadier says. “And see that your companions do as well. They are your responsibility, Spider.”

“Yes, sir,” Ace says. “Understood.”

Ace turns around to look at the team. “El Brigadier’s going to let me live,” he says with a laugh that almost makes that a joke. “Who’s hungry? Shall we hit the Food Center?” He starts walking towards the ork-sized door on the far side of the hanger. “Are we still thinking Mexican?”

"Si!" El Cid says, "At least for me. I want some authentic Mexican food."

El Cid had listened to the exchange between "Spider" and "El Brigadier", but managed to keep a straight face at Ace's obvious discomfiture.

Ace is silent until the group gets through the ork door and about ten paces past. Then he lets out a long stream of air from between purse lips. His shoulders relax, almost slumping.

“Well, that went a lot better than it could have,” he says to no one in particular.

The Spider leads the team through a series of corridors with doors spaced widely apart. Most seem to be storage. A few mechanical rooms or generators and the like sit behind other doors, at least according to their Spanish signs. Ace stops at what looks like a service elevator and hits a button.

{Revs}

Revs goes with the group.

"Absolutely mexican! Don't forget, I need to pick up food and water for Baby Blue. Are those kind of shops open 24 hours here?"

“What kind? Convenience stores? Grocery stores? Yes, they have both on the Concourse. Their selections are somewhat limited, but they are here. Ration bars and water should be available, I think. I don’t know what their hours are. It’s what? Around 6 AM or so?” Ace shrugs. “Tears has my phone, so I can’t check. If they’re not open yet, I would guess they will be in two or three hours.”

The elevator doors open, revealing an empty car. Ace steps in and presses the hold button until everyone else gets in. Then he hits the button for 3. The elevator rises. It feels like an old model. It shakes and rattles and occasionally groans. Still, the car arrives safely. The floor is lined on their side with restaurants. None of which are named, but most have pictures or holos of the food they share. A few have prices listed or text descriptions of their food. Ace continues leading the group until they reach an unlabeled door of a restaurant whose windows have pictures of Mexican food.

Ace opens the door and holds it for the rest of the team.

[El Cid]

El Cid waits for the others to enter and makes sure Ace enters before he does. Once the others go in El Cid looks at Ace, "Age before beauty."

"Besides, us professional 'runners can't appear to be too trusting of our cargo." El Cid finishes with a wink.

Ace chuckles, steps under Cid’s arm, and moves into the restaurant, shaking his head. “Careful,” he says in a whisper that barely reaches Cid’s ears even though Ace is directly below his arm. “The walls here have ears as well as eyes…”

A late teen, early twenties, chubby Hispanic female elf walks over to greet you. “Welcome, please, sit anywhere…”

“Gracias,” Ace says and leads the group toward a back corner of the restaurant to a reinforced U-shaped booth that will hold El Cid’s size. The floor beneath the booth has a series of small steps, making it easy for smaller metahumans to access the bench as well. He slides in first, meaning he will be seated in the middle of the short side of the U, and no matter how the team arranges themselves, he will need to go through at least 2, possibly 3 members of Gumberoo.

The spider turns to the waitress and says, “Three pitchers of Modelo Especial Verdadero to start, please. And three of water, plenty of ice. Please bring queso and guacamole when you bring the chips, and bring tomatillo or poblano salsa as well as the red if you have it today. And you don’t need to ask. Everything that comes to the table is real. No soy. None, I don’t plan on dying today. ¿Lo entiendes?”

Wide-eyed, the waitress nods. “Sí, señor.”
