02 - The Draconian Menace

#1 Post by sulldawga »

Fallcrest
The Nentir Inn
Twentysecondday, Fifthmonth 616 NF
Clear, 11 MPH winds, 47 degrees
Morning

The new day yields more sunlight but considerably colder temperatures. All awaken feeling rested and healed, thanks to Wick's Blessings and a good night's sleep in a warm bed. A leisurely breakfast in the common room is just the thing to bring some color back to the party's faces.

The party contemplates their actions for the day. They remember that the Lord Warden offered a bounty of 10 sp per kobold killed in the Cloak Wood, and they did indeed slay 20 of the scaly foes. They could visit Moonstone Keep and collect their silver. They also collected 169 sp (after deducting 3 sp for use of a farmer's barn and some dry firewood), 3 cp, and three small gems. So, for the time being, money is not too much of an issue.

Four slings costs a mere 4 sp and can be found for sale at a number of different locations around the city, so those can be easily purchased.

Just as they are finishing their meals, the party is greeted by Orok. He carries a hefty pack, which he shrugs off his shoulders and starts digging into.

I wanted to show ya my gratitude for rescuing me. That and the gratitude of my clan, the Goldspinners. You're a friend to Clan Goldspinner forever now.

He presents each of the PCs a silk pouch which contains 40 sp. He also gives the party a Healer's Kit: a small box that contains bandages, balms, and salves.

Everyone gets 2 HP of healing from sleeping in a safe and comfortable location. Wick casts Mend Flesh twice. This brings all PCs back to full health. Dain is at 11/12 hp.

Thea

"Thank you Orok, that is very generous. Would you, or any of your clan, be interested in helping us clear out the goblins? It would make travel so much safer in the area."

Dagr

"Some help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps some young warrior types? We could cover their rations and maybe come up with an arrangement on some sort of pay perhaps?"

Thinking of Hireling vs Henchman, not opposed to the later but not sure it is on the table at this point.

Orok strokes his beard. I'm interested in finishing the job with those kobolds, so no one has ta suffer the way I suffered. As for my clan, I can't speak for them, but I'll ask. I'll come back here tomorrow with their answer.

When you inquire about getting your gems appraised, Orok suggests you see if there's a caravan of dwarves in town at the Market Green. His clan's caravan master has left the city headed for Hammerfast or else he would recommend his kin. If there are no dwarves, he knows of a shop called Naerumar's Imports. It's generally considered the nicest shop in the city but he doesn't expect you'd get the best deal there. It's on the east side of town, just south of the Wizard's Gate.

He says his good byes and heads out.

CHA (Leadership) check on Orok: 2d6+1 8 I should have added another bonus since you saved Orok's life. We'll call this a friendly, helpful reaction.
: 1d20 15 This is just barely a pass. Orok will help in getting other dwarves to assist.

You could certainly attempt to recruit Orok as a henchman. I can roll on the Hireling Advancement table for the last adventure. My house rule is that I add +1 after every failed roll to add to the chances that a hireling turns into a henchman.
Hireling Advancement table: 2d6 6 He gains a piece of useful gear.
: 1d13 11 Pommel Blade (spring)

Note that all hired mercenaries cost 10 sp/day. For this adventure against the kobolds, Orok will work for free but not permanently.

You all know that there are no banks but wealthy people can act in that fashion. Your best bet in Fallcrest would be asking Grundelmar, the priest at the House of the Sun.

Fallcrest
The Nentir Inn
Twentythirdday, Fifthmonth 616 NF
Very Cloudy, 10 MPH winds, 64 degrees
Morning

The party spends another day resting and recovering from the venture to Kobold Hall. The weather looks mixed today, with the much warmer temps outweighed by the ominous clouds approaching. It smells like rain in the near future.

Orok returns, this time with four dwarves in tow. He introduces Azmumin, Tordek, Braddoum, and Krandrid. All are equipped with heavy crossbows and medium armor.

My clan-mates are willing to return with us to clear out Kobold Hall, at the usual rate of 10 silvers a day. Prob'ly worth waiting a day though. Storm's a-brewing.

The dwarves would like two days' pay up front, so their kin get some coin should they not return.

Orok is recruiting his kinsmen to clear out the kobolds: Orok recruiting success: 2d6+4 14 Yeah, that's enthusiastic.
How many have crossbows? crossbows: 1d4 4 The party is in luck! No need to equip them.

Dain is now at full health.

Thea & Wick

Thea are Wick are both happy to wait a day after the last time they travelled in bad weather. They also have no issue in paying the 2 days up front. The day can be spent getting rations for everyone and anything else the PCs might need.

Added sling to Wick's gear

The party inquires with Orok, before he departs, as to the best place to obtain chain mail and shield. He recommends you try Teldorthan's Arms. You all, of course, know Teldorthan as the dwarf who gave you the quest to retrieve his dragon hide from Kobold Hall. His shop is to the south in Lowtown by the King's Gate (the southern gate of Fallcrest).

As for slings and rations, the Halfmoon Trading House is close, being in Hightown and just across the river. Sandercot Provisions, which you discovered upon your arrival next to the Market Green, is less expensive but has cheaper quality goods. Since the difference is likely to be minor for things like slings and rations, you buy them at Halfmoon.

Teldorthan has a chain shirt and a shield for Thea and Wick. It's relatively early in the season so his stock is full, and you also understand from the dwarf that his services are in high demand. The barbarians in the Winterbole Forest are becoming more active these days, making their way to the south to test themselves against man and orc alike.

Shopping only takes a couple of hours so you have time for other things today if you like. The sky looks increasingly menacing but the rain has not yet begun to fall.

Assume normal prices (40 sp for chain shirt, 20 sp for shield) and we'll roll the cost of rations into your Lifestyle expenses.

Wick

Wick purchases the shield.

He suggests that we talk to head priest Grundelmar to see if he might let us leave some of our money (and other gear) at the church while we are away. Of course it would only be fair to provide a donation to the church in return.

Why don't we use the 169sp to pay for the hirelings? That'll cover the first 4 days pay. We can start a group fund with an equal share of future treasure. That said, we still need to get those gems appraised so we could use some of that to start a group fund

We should see if there are any dwarves at the Market Green to look at the gems.

Teldorthan notes that he is a worker of metal and does not typically sell items of leather. He is willing to make a leather "jack" for Dain but it will take a week and require payment up front of 25 sp.

There are indeed dwarven merchants at the Market Green. They are willing to purchase your gems. One is a ruby worth 50 sp. The other two are garnets worth a total of 50 sp.

Grundelmar will hold onto silver and other possessions for Wick. He calls for a monk and instructs the woman to write up a promissory note for the amount of silver you share with him. Any church of Pelor will honor the note.

He pauses for a moment, giving you a chance to offer up a donation to the church.

How much are you donating?

Thea thanks Teldorthan and gives him the 25sp.

Thea wishes to leave her leather armour behind and Wick his manacles.

I'm not sure how much coin he will be leaving or donating, until we decide what to do with the 100g from the gems? Rex do you want to divide the 100sp from the coins between the four PCs?

Sure, but maybe split it 5 ways and give a share to the party funds.

OK, 20sp each and 20sp in the group fund. If we put the 169sp in the group fund too that puts it at 189sp, and we use it to pay for hirelings. Paying 4 hirelings for 2 days up front is 4x10x2=80sp, leaving 109sp in the group fund. Is that OK?

Fallcrest
The Nentir Inn
Twentyfourthday, Fifthmonth 616 NF
Very Cloudy, 4 MPH winds, 64 degrees
Morning

As expected, it rained all night, with heavy winds. Probably an inch of rain in total. The next day yielded similar weather as before, with a feeling that rain was probably still coming. Hard to say when, though, as the wind seemed to have calmed.

The dwarves showed up early, as expected.

We weren't sure if you wanted to go or not, but we're ready if you are.

If you want to retcon doing anything else on the 23rd, just let me know.
