OOC 1 - Clacking and Talk-Smacking Zone

#1 Post by hedgeknight »

Hey folks > welcome aboard!
This is the official OOC thread for the group. If you have other, more private questions, please post them to me in your private forum. I will be setting up other threads as the day goes along. One for character creations, Realms rules, etc. Thank you for your patience.

Any objection to starting characters with a fixed xp total?

I will gladly start with zero xp, so this isn't an attempt at mechanical maneuvering or character optimization (or rules lawerness). I raise this question only because, the way my mind works, it bothers me that, by your rules, a Fighter would start at 1st-level but a Druid would start at 2nd... when both require the same xp total to reach 2nd-level.

The Ranger class is at a disadvantage against the Illusionist or Monk class in the same way, as all three classes reach 2nd-level once they reach the same xp amount, but the former remains stuck at 1st-level while the latter two both begin at 2nd-level.

If it helps, I would propose having all characters start with one of the following totals, depending upon what you're most comfortable with: 2,001xp, 2,251xp, or 2,501xp.
  • 2,001xp: Thief, Cleric, Druid, Fighter

I have a more prosaic question: does the map not work for everyone?

I just checked and it's not working for me, either.

I don't have an objection at all if that is the consensus of the group. My reasoning for starting at different levels is purely toughness and survival. Most 1st level mages & thieves are low on the survival scale when facing some of the challenges a 1st level fighter/barbarian/ranger can overcome. And if a cleric begins at 2nd level that just gives them an extra advantage of helping the party with healing spells (this is old-school thinking, in case you can't tell ;) ).

But...I'm flexible, and eager to hear what others say about it.

Oh, bother. It may be how I loaded it here at work.
I'll fiddle with it tonight when I get home. :)

That makes perfect sense.

For characters that start at 1st-level (e.g. Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger), do they begin at 0 xp? Or half needed for 2nd?

Survivability yeah I suppose that does make sense since almost all of the classes that start @ 2nd level get less HP. Though for me as a cleric with my stats and all that I have pretty good HP at level 2.

At any rate I have no issues with Dave's proposal for starting XP and the break downs by classes.

A Barbarian with a very high Con gets bootloads of HP and a d12 btw.. So at first level my pc could conceivably have 15 or 16 hp

I am fine with any of the starting scenarios so far. They all work.

Do the demi-humans still get the Ability modifiers from the PHB?

Can Halflings have a 19 Dex? (Assuming the answer to above is yes)

Would a Halfling Druid/Thief be allowed?

That's just the thumbnail, try this:

As for characters, I'll roll some dice and see if I can pull off crazy shit like a half-orc paladin (fighter/cleric)! :D

The link was normal sized for me as I posted the url but meh...I only had to remove like the parts after .jpg from what Hedge posted. There used to be a forgotten realms interactive map of Toril somewhere I used to use it like 10 years ago.

Found it! https://www.aidedd.org/atlas/index.php?map=R&l=1

BTW: I rolled up a Gnome Cleric in case that influences anyone else's character creation.

Nice map, thanks Ed.

I am undecided on my PC, could go several ways with my rolls so will hold off until I know what some others are making. Currently looks like a Gnome Cleric and Barbarian of some sort.

Hey guys > lots of good questions. Let's get to them.

Originally, I said the characters have ventured together and know each other, so they would begin halfway to 2nd level. For a barbarian that is more xp but just means they have earned xp growing up in the wilds before they joined a group of adventurers. I'm also fine with the 2nd table you provided Dave, the 2251 xp table. Very flexible. If everyone is cool with that, let's do 2251 xp for every character. The barbarian will be okay, I think. ;) Thoughts?

She will have max hp at first, so whatever that is...

Yes, yes, and erm...no > druid/thief is not a combo in 1st Ed.

I'm currently working on my female half-orc fighter/cleric, so we might not need two gnome clerics :D

Here we go:
Image
Questions: a fighter gets 10 hp at first level and a cleric get 8. As a multi-class I get both divided by 2, so 9hp?
Having no access to UA, can someone help me with Weapon Specialization?
Also, I haven't the slightest clue what my starting gold is :D
+1 Ranged Weapon (arrow, bolt, sling bullet, dart; half-dozen) So is the weapon +1, is the ammo +1 or both? :)
