Doubtful
We need to retreat! We can barricade the door in the barracks! Mai, this is not cowardice, it is making sure all of us stay safe. Many of us are not as strong as you and will not survive a standup fight. I'll help hold them off while all of you start back to the barracks. My club seems more effective with them.
Doubtful casts shillelagh on his club and attacks the closest oncoming crabman.

Fall back, then. I shall defend our retreat.
Next round, Mai will begin a cautious withdrawal, keeping her primary attention on Lobster Johnson and his buddies while moving to join the others.

Jonas knows they must stand their ground...he sees the crabmen making their way toward he and Mai. Jonas takes a couple steps forward to better his position. You see his hands and fingers fan out toward the crabman charging in his direction. Mai, wait for it...then attack again!!!. Magic Missile

Keilif knows that retreat may be the best recourse; however, he is reluctant to turn his back on the encroaching enemy.

Burly the Bumbling Baker
Wanting to run, but not wanting to leave his friends, especially since they have stepped up to fight, Burly swallows his fear, tries to not piss himself, and takes a wild swing at the closest crabman.
[1d20] = 2, [1d6] = 5

Crabalanche
Round 4
In the dark:
Mai shouts out for the group to fall back. None do. She gets the drop on her crabby enemy and fires off an arrow as it draws nearer. It thwacks off of the things outer shell but doesn't even slow it down. Her next arrow finds a shoulder joint, sticking half way into its soft flesh. It howls and hisses as it continues on. Jonas steps forward, towards the danger for some unknown reason, and quickly fires off a magic spell at the monster. A tiny bolt of pure energy shoots from his fingertips and hits the crabman at point blank range. It sizzles its flesh a little bit but fails to bring the beast down. It retaliates with two vicious swings of its huge pincher hands. One hits Mai but doesn't penetrate her armor. The other grazes Jonas across his upper arm as he stares back at the monster while now wincing in pain. 2 dam
Umrick the big gnome stabs at the floundering wreck at his feet. Again it doesn't defend itself or return an attack. It just flops around on the ground as if it has no control over its own motions. Even still, the gnome can't place an accurate strike on the huge creature.
In the circle of torch and lantern light:
Doubtful barks out orders that involve a hasty rearguard retreat towards the safety of the barracks. As usual, few actually listen to him. He then casts a spell onto his staff that he hopes will help him in battle with these mutated sea monsters.
Jervis, Keilif, and Burly are not intimidated by these massive, foul crustaceans. Instead of retreating as commanded, they all three move into an attack position, forming a tight wall across the narrow tunnel. Side by side the brave adventurers fight to the death, either their own, or the filthy crabmen.
Jervis dips down low and motions upwards with his sword as the monsters charge in on him. He moves to the side at the perfect moment and catches the first one just under it's hard shell. His blade sinks in deep as he thrusts upwards and stands. The monster let's out a deafening roar as gushes of bright orangish ichor spews out of its massive gut wound.
Keilif, the former crabber turned priest, has seen literally thousands of crabs in his lifetime. None quite like these crabs however. He remembers his uncles old crabber buddies speaking of strange monsters like these that roamed the depths, but he never once thought that he would be taking one on in mortal combat in the name of the Sea Mother. He uses his ornate mace just like he did his old crab mallet, choking up and bashing the injured monsters head in as it slumps over from its initial horrific wound. The thing crashes hard to the floor of the cave in a heap, dying in a puddle of its own digestive juices. Amazingly, in just two swings, the duo was able to take down and destroy a much larger and stronger opponent before it even had a chance to attack.
Their celebration is unfortunately short lived as Burly has far worse luck, attempting to help man the front lines even though he is already gravely injured. His swing flies wide as one of the monsters takes him on toe to claw. It counters with two pincher attacks of its own upon the mail-less mage, hitting with one. The claw tears through both clothing and flesh, ripping a large bloody gash open near his rib cage, and taking the young man down to the ground unconscious in the process. 4 dam Doubtful steps up with his enchanted weapon after seeing Burly fall. His attack proves fruitless amidst the chaos going on all around him.
Both remaining upright crabmen continue their frenzied attacks.

Since everyone has decided to stay and fight...
Doubtful will not leave anyone behind and since they will not retreat he steps up to swing again at the monstrous crab. We are in this until the end, he grimly realizes.

Umrick Histix, Gnome Fighter
Clearly not having learned to take his time and find a weak spot in the crab's shell, Umrick hastily jabs at the foul creature, anxious to aid his friends. Unfortunately, his lack of attention to his current task is preventing him from dispatching his foe.

Mai nocks and fires again- at what looks like point-blank range.
Initiative [1d10+1] = 6+1 = 7
attack [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7
another shot wasted. She makes a fast job of switching to her sword as the thing advances.

Jonas ignores the pain in his arm, he moves to the steps and begins concentrating on the crabman, using the Conch cantrip.

Keilif:
"No!" Keilif bellows at the sight of Burly falling. He vehemently tries to smash the horrid crabman, but his attempt is flawed.

Burly the Bleeding Baker
Burly grimaces in agony as he sinks to the dirty cavern floor. Blood runs down his chest and stomach, ruining his good clothes. As he loses consciousness, he looks at his finger. Covered with blood, it is no longer blue. He frowns at that...and then he is dreaming of Granny's biscuits...

Another Soul Lost
Round 5
The natural armor of these monsters seems nearly impenetrable all of the sudden. This time, no effective hits are scored against the crabmen as they press their attacks. Doubtful is cut and pinched again by a wicked claw of the fresh enemy in front of him. 4 dam Sadly, Burly the baking mage continues to bleed out, succumbing to his wounds and dying, right there at the feet of his friends.
Elsewhere, back in town......

In the darkness at the other end of the huge cavern, Mai and Jonas face the slightly injured crabman who is still very intent on adding more dead bodies to his casts easy food pile. Mai fires off an arrow at point blank range that unsurprisingly does nothing. Jonas backs up to try another spell and is hit as he retreats. 2 dam The other huge pincer takes a swipe at Mai as she ducks out of its way, drawing her sword in the process. Jonas backs up even more and begins a simple cantrip, hoping it will confuse the dumb creature. It seems to work momentarily as the creature stops flailing its arms at you and looks out stupidly down the tunnel it came from.coil23 wrote:Esmerelda Pootch suddenly rockets from her chair where she had been lazing in the front yard. Felled by something fishy! Even his firm thighs cannot help him now! Oh, dear, something terrible awful has happened!
She bustles inside to try scrying to discern what has befallen her blueberry boy.

Doubtful he'll last another round)
Goddamnit! Retreat had been an option, you know! I'll delay this lot long enough for you to get away! Now go! (this yelled at the group on his side of the cavern circle)
Doubtful stands to the fore (so as to be between his peers and the crabbies) and delivers a final attack.
Great, Pelor! I am your shepherd! I fall so that others may live! I offer you visions of steamed crab and clarified butter and hope to deliver you this menu with one final blow!

Keilif:
Unwilling to let the nature priest lay down his life, Keilif expels an oath and attempts to deliver a crushing blow to the crabman, "Those of you who are able, RETREAT!" He continues to shout above the din, "Shiliel, guide our hands to banish these perversions of the sea!"
