Birthdays!
Birthdays are kind of a big deal in Alleborg, but of course none of us decide which day we're born. I meant to do this earlier, but I randomly assigned birthdays to active PCs. On that day, your PC will receive a gift from the DM. It will take the form of a mild to moderate boon, a clue or a low level magic item like a healing potion. Here are the birthdays, followed by a reminder of the months of the Masmurian kingdom. Hyde just missed his birthday - the game started three days after.
Galan - 27th of Glowinghearth
Korok - 13th of Grasses
Angus - 27th of Flowering
Dandelion - 10th of Fruiting
Yenny - 14th of Harvest
Arnulf - 17th of Harvest
Hellebore - 2nd of Threshing
Chet - 26th of Grapeharvest
Ilfrien - 30th of Grapeharvest
Hyde - 10th of Rituals
Glowinghearth (January) - Named for the warm fireplaces to ward off the worst of the cold weather.
Hewing (February) - Named for woodcutting, to keep the hearths stoked as winter drags on
Culling (March) - Named for the culling of the livestock, whose meat is often necessary as foodstuffs begin to run out.
Grasses (April) - The color green begins to manifest itself in nature.
Flowering (May) - More colors about, as flower buds open and promise a prosperous harvest.
Fruiting (June) - Celebrates the beginning of fruit to appear.
Harvest (July) – The harvest month
Threshing (August) – The threshing festival.
Grapeharvest (September) - Grapes are harvested for winemaking.
Fallingleaves (October) - Duh. Oct 20 – Veles and the dead. The dead parade around town.
Frost (November)
Rituals (December)

Shall we start the betting now on who of the above live to see their next birthday?

I forgot that we don't play in real time. So the OOC birthday present to the character from the DM will be based on the in-game calendar?

(I don't know what this smilie is supposed to represent, but I like it.)

Yes, that's right! Some examples of a birthday present could be:
Next training session to gain a level is free
Healing potion
Important clue or piece of information

Hi,
Just letting you know I updated house rules slightly. First, I removed the need to roll for initiative in rounds with 2+ attacks; I've reverted to BTB, where two attacks happen at the beginning and end of a round.
I also posted rules for fighting blind. These are pretty much BTB and follow common sense. Here's the added part:
Fighting blind
As stated in the rules, blind PCs (and their foes) incur a -4 penalty on "to hit" rolls when blind if vision is their primary sense used in combat. Blind combatants also incur a +4 AC penalty only if he/she can be seen by his/her opponent. Regardless, blinded combatants do not benefit from their usual DEX bonuses.

When I was a kid I received the D&D red box for Christmas. I would have been 11. That gift sparked a love for the game that has remained strong for more than 30 years.
May you all have a wonderful holiday, no matter what or how you celebrate!

Same here! I got the red box set Christmas of 1983. Still have the booklet (and some of the dice). I had never heard of it, but my aunt knew I liked numbers and heard kids liked it. My uncle (who was only 10 years older than me and was a freshman in college at the time) said that only dorks played that game. I was mad at him for awhile after that.
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all of you!
