Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug 2021
Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
Stealthy Fingers - Cloak [1d6] = 5, Hide: [1d100] = 46
And, yeah, I think I'll re-roll that 1:
Initiative: [1d6] = 1
Not that it matters.

Hengist smashes with his mace when the gargoyles come within reach. Mace to hit (THACO 18, STR +1, imbued +1) [1d20+2] = 17+2 = 19 Damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3
Playing: At the Forest's Edge: Desmond Halfling Vagabond

Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
The gargoyles dive from the sky! With their wicked claws extended, they swoop down, trying to rake the group and escape back skywards. Four of them dive at the mules - Elmer (-10) and Buttercup (-8) are both cleaved to the bone, whinnying in terror. Jimmy is completely occupied, dragging them back by their harnesses. Hengist rushes to their defense and hits one of them with his mace (-4), knocking it to the ground so it can be better engaged.
The last gargoyle takes a different course, diving at Markd as the largest and most imposing threat (Bandy being tiny and Fingers being invisible and hiding). It rakes Markd's face with its claws (-10) before his blade comes up - snickersnack! - and cleaves the creature in two with two well-aimed crosscuts (-7, -5), dropping it in hunks into the grasses.
The three remaining gargoyles wheel about in the sky above you, preparing to dive again....

The multiple images of Winnie sing arcane words as their hands and bodies move rhythmically. Strands of webbing begin to form on the flying gargoyles their wings.
no rulebook handy. Is there something I should too for that?
And...Initiative [1d6] = 6

Assuming Markd's injury leaves a scar, shouldn't that increase his Charisma? ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
Markd, feeling intense pain-fueled adrenaline, slashes toward the sky hoping to knock down another dive bomber. He knows that every attempt is critical to save the four brave souls and the poor stable boy before they are gashed to death.
lngswrd (+2) (Thac0 14) [1d20+4] = 16+4 = 20; damage [1d8+4] = 2+4 = 6
and he aims true once again.
: lngswrd (+2) (Thac0 14) [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19; damage [1d8+4] = 8+4 = 12
Owen the proud warhorse, attempts to trample whatever gorgoyle hits the ground, but misses.
1st[1d20] = 11;[1d6] = 6 2nd[1d20] = 8;[1d6] = 1

Hengist strikes again at the gargoyles: Mace to hit (THACO 18, STR +1, imbued +1) [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15 Damage [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

Fingers remains hidden, emerging only if one of the gargoyles lands in a position from which he can attack it from behind.
Backstab w/longsword +1 (THAC0 17): [1d20+6] = 16+6 = 22, [1d8x2] = 1x2 = 2+2
A 4-hp backstab. Beautiful.![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Bandy moves near Mitch and the mules and attempts to defend them, should the gargoyles try that maneuver again.

BTW, who has that staff that blasts gargoyles into rubble? It was a staff, right?

OOC: Dunno if we need it, though. Seem to be doing OK so far... Especially if Markd does his healing bit...

Famous last words...
Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
Swooping in the second time, your party is ready for the winged antagonists. Winnie invokes a ball of webbing which completely envelops the largest gargoyle, sending it crashing to the ground, struggling within.
The second gargoyle swoops at Markd, meeting its end at the two well-placed strokes of his blade once again. It's parts lie in the grass next to the others. The third gargoyle dives at the mounts, getting struck by Bandy then finished off by Finger's well-aimed backstab.
The last gargoyle, which was grounded last turn, gets hit again by Hengist as it takes to the sky, attempting to flee rather than fight now that it is heavily wounded....

Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
Markd attempts to swing Owen over toward the fleeing gargoyle to swat him down.
He misses. lngswrd (+2) (Thac0 14) [1d20+4] = 2+4 = 6; damage [1d8+4] = 8+4 = 12
and to prove the first failed attempt wasnt a fluke, he does it again.
lngswrd (+2) (Thac0 14) [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7; damage [1d8+4] = 4+4 = 8
Not to be outdone, the young warhorse proves why he was offered for sale at such a cheap rate.
1st[1d20] = 5;[1d6] = 6 2nd[1d20] = 2;[1d6] = 1
But, at least they get to make their actions first.
Initiative [1d6] = 6

Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
Fingers fires a blessed arrow at the fleeing gargoyle's back.
'Silmaril' (THAC0 17): [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15, [1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10
If that doesn't kill it, would the garyogle be in range for another shot next round?

Bandy attempts to strike at the webbed gargoyle, if he can get close enough to not get entangled...
Penderyn Longsword THAC016 [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14 Dam [1d8+2] = 5+2 = 7

Re: Expedition: Fingers/Treasure of Yoldessi Plains- 30 Aug
(I'm not going to require repeat rolls to kill a bound foe here.)
Markd tries to ride after the gargoyle as it takes to the sky, but can't get close enough as it lifts off. Fingers, however, fires a well-placed shot that pierces it straight through the abdomen, (-10) dropping the winged creature to the ground one final time.
Bandy approaches the bound gargoyle, grim-faced, and plunges his longsword through its head. The creature ceases its struggle as Bandy wipes the strands of webbing from his blade.
The skies are empty and the grassy plains are still around you. The birdsong ceased with the appearance of the gargoyle predators. You are not far from the sloping base of the city motte, rising up to the west. Jimmy succeeds in calming the mules, treating their wounds to stop the bleeding and glad they are not worse. Markd's wounds seal up slowly as the group recovers from the attack and moves on to their next task.
With Markd's expertise and his surveying tools, he is able to quickly measure to find the exact spot indicated on Kellyr's map. Finger's careful inspection finds the outline of a door there, secretly hidden in a discrete alcove from all but the north side. He doesn't find a latch, but does determine that what appears to be a regular indentation in the stone is actually a disguised keyhole.
