Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Keehnelf: I updated my spell on the character sheet a few days ago. Did you want me to indicate it elsewhere though?
Perthrin
Perthrin immediately felt bad for the bear, but he wasn't about to give it a handout, lest he lose his hand as well as his face. Not knowing if Bromric's banging would drive it off, the elf steps to the side, he looses an arrow at the bear.
Long Bow [1d20] = 3, damage [1d8] = 2
He feels fortunate that, at the least, he hasn't hit one of his companions.

actually, an odd die roll does strike another combatant--unless you meant that thought ironically

Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
The bear was 40' away and we won initiative. I thought that that shot would be prior to being in combat. With Perthrin's average DEX, I would have just hidden behind everyone else had I known the missed shot penalty would already be in effect. Sorry if that was wrong and I just hit someone!
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Oh I gotcha--there's no enemy initiative roll yet but you're correct. If you win, the fact that
Bromric will receive a charge means the arrow shot goes off first!

Gilgamesh had been carrying his crossbow in the crook of his arm; when the bear rushes them, snarling with voracious fury, he cooly takes a few quick steps to one side, drops to one knee, and lines up his shot before loosing a quarrel.
Attack with crossbow: [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15, damage: [1d6] = 2

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 3
The party fans out to minimize the damage the bear can deal in a short time--the pair with ranged weapons spreading to either side to cover the creature. Gilgamesh's bolt strikes true, but Perthrin's is overly hasty and and charging bear is somewhere else by the time his mis-aimed arrow arrives.
The bear, struck in mid-charge, seems to realize that it has blundered into something not quite like prey, and it breaks off, turning tail and running back the way it came.
Morale [2d6] = 12
Does the party pursue, fire again as it leaves range, or break off?

Perthrin is happy to watch it run away, hoping it finds easier prey elsewhere to fill its stomach. He attempts to retrieve his arrow.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Bromric harrumphs in dwarven fashion, still standing fixedly and letting the creature flee before him. With a satisfied nod, he leads them on again once it has disappeared.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Both Perthrin and Gilgamesh are able to recover their fired missiles once the bear has retreated out of range.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Gilgamesh is cocking back his crossbow for another shot when he notices the bear's flight. He briefly considers speeding another quarrel after it, but shrugs with a grunt and lets the beast go.

June 8, 1 VC - 1:40am
The party, having routed the charging bear, continues on and enters the blasted forest just before noon. The presence of the pack mule slows them considerably once they find themselves among the fallen tree corpses that prevent any kind of straight travel. A group on foot might be able to traverse the trunks by force or by clambering over one to the next, or even walking along the top of one for a short time, but the mule requires work to aid over blockages and in many cases must simply be led through the narrow existing paths that meander frustratingly to and fro amid the general wreckage, turning their swift forward progress into an interminable crawl toward their looming, smoking destination.
In the dark of the night, Perthrin is on watch in a hollow between a number of fallen trees where the party is sleeping, and he is disturbed from his watch by an unusual clicking, chattering noise suddenly arising from somewhere to the west. He scrambles to his feet and peers over the edge of the log in that direction, and spots four large insectoid shapes creeping along a pair of nearby logs toward the party's position. They are approximately fifty feet away, headed in your direction--and they seem to have noticed the shadow of you against the dim glow of your campfire and begin scuttling forward more aggressively.
On Watch: Bromric, Gilgamesh, Kennit, Perthrin, Yusuf [1d5] = 4
Perthrin is awake, the rest are sleeping.
Please deduct one day's rations each.
Actions and initiative!

Perthrin would shout, but what is the point since no one can understand him. Instead, he steps on the hand of his nearest companion in an attempt to rouse them, all the while moving his hands while he weaves his spell. He is shrouded by an aura of white that flies outward to the insects.
Sleep [2d8] = 5
Don't know if I can try to wake someone while casting a spell. If not, then... well... Phooey. That'll be one bug asleep as the rest eat us.

my guess is giant beetles. There are three kinds in the book, one of which lights up, which these don't seem to. The other two are tougher...

"Snoooooooghaphblm. Mrm. Mrm mrm," snores Bromric.

funny. With his scars, that's just what Perthrin sounds like!
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Closest? Bromric Yusuf Gilgamesh Kennit [1d4] = 1
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 2
Since I didn't receive a party initiative roll:
Initiative [1d6] = 5
Perthrin uneashes his magic on the approaching creatures, and watches in satisfaction as one of them falls abruptly off the side of the log along which it is crawling. As the remainder accelerate their approach, Perthrin can see clearly that they are giant spiders, whether black or gray or dark brown is hard to say under the pale moonlight.
Enemy saving throw [1d20] = 8
Enemy saving throw [1d20] = 19
Bromric, at Perthrin's foot, struggles groggily to his feet and readies himself (weapon to hand, and shield, but no armor). The spiders are perhaps fifteen feet from the camp.
Actions and initiative!

Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
"Akrak Runk Azamar! Spiders upon us! Rise and fight! Rise and fight!" bellows Bromric as he takes up his runesword and shield, his tunic flapping open around his thighs. "Aaaaaargh!" he roars as he brings his sword down on the nearest insect. "Flee back into the darkness, back where you belong!" hoping to intimidate their number.
Bromric [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22 [1d8+4] = 3+4 = 7
(Someone else roll first initiative, please)

Perthrin is disappointed that only one spider was affected. And not surprised when his arrow flies wide of its mark.
