Jinsei listened, his breath slow, his mind meditating on the ki of stalking shadow in case the steps approached the closet door.

The ninja then heard the abort signal and sighed. One would think this is the Emperor’s Palace, given how difficult it seemed to steal a gods-damn teacup. 96 seconds into the room, one minute and a half, and guards were approaching? How was that? Didn’t it take five minutes to get from one end of the compound to the other? Two aborts! Jinsei felt his ninja career aborting.

He focused on remaining calm and listening for the footsteps to leave so he and Fuma could escape.

Yes, some light of body weight person is still in the room and walking around. Possibly the adolescent son or daughter Kaida mentioned. With a lantern lighting up to the ceiling.

Fuma

Fuma remains silent and still, focused on not being sensed.

It sounds like Fuma is using his ninjutsu skill. He can roll on that if you'd like. Jinsei can too.

Does Jinsei need to roll ninjitsu hiding in a closet, as opposed to out in open behind a desk screen? If so, Closet ninjitsu [1d20]=20

Jinsei crouches among the rolled futon and blankets in the closet. He tries to control his breathe, making it shallow, and his heartbeat, making it faint. But his frustration at hearing the call to abort is too fresh. He knows that if the closet door is opened, he will be seen. He hears the sound of the small human's feet moving to the area behind the screen and stop.

Fuma lies under the low desk, stilling his breath, his body's ki energy, and his very thoughts. He sees the area light up as a carried lantern comes behind the screens. And smallish feet in white tabi socks, and the scabbard of a katana almost touching the floor. For three heartbeats the feet are still, and the light shifts as the lantern is swung from right to left. Then the feet turn and move away the way they came and it's dark behind the screen once more.

The young ninja hear the feet moving with the energy and impatience of youth back toward the bedroom's southwest door. It slides in its wooden groove and closes with a click of wood on wood.

Jinsei counted to 30 and then cracked the door open to peek if the room was clear.

Fuma

Knowing time is short, Fuma counts to 15 and the sneaks out from hiding to make sure the room is clear.

Fuma counts to 15. Ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, shichi, hachi, kyuu, juu, juu-ichi, juu-ni, juu-san, juu-shi, juu-go. He duckwalks from under the desk and moves toward the door he and Minoru entered from.

Minoru counts to 15, silently lying the the closet and listening for sounds from the mansion's deeper interior. He plans to wait to the count of 30. ...Juu-go, juu-roku, juu-shichi, juu- hachi....

It sounds like Fuma is using ninjutsu. If so, please state whether he's walking (-1 to BCS) or running (-3 to BCS). Walking he can move 14 yards and pass through the door and out into the yard. Running, he can go twice as far and make a karumi-jutsu (leaping and climbing) roll to clamber over the wall. (He could also unbar and start opening the gate on the north wall. (A feature I failed to mention on the nakama's way in. Please see the OOC thread) He knows that the gate doors are made of thick, heavy wood mounted on iron hinges that are seldom silent, unless recently oiled/greased).

If Jinsei heard Fuma leaving, he would assume its safe and leave earlier.

Turn 11
Fuma walks quietly to the bedroom's door to outside. But not quietly enough that Jinsei doesn't hear him. He slides open the closet door and follows. Fuma opens the door and the two shinobi step onto the mansion's veranda and quietly close the door behind them.

Ahead are steps down to the ground and the wall and gate 5 yds ahead. Going over the wall will need a climbing roll (BCS Deftness/2) or karumijutsu roll. The gate's door is barred from the inside. As mentioned earlier, opening it might be noisy, but maybe not. The people of Nippon are generally fastidious about maintenance.

Actions? If moving, please state whether walking or running and if trying ninjutsu stealth. (There's no penalty for trying. You just make noise, the same as if you hadn't tried. If climbing, please roll. Those aren't the only options, of course.

Jinsei followed Fuma outside. He walked as quickly as silence would allow.

Fuma silently dashes to the wall, but can't quickly find purchase for his hands and feet on its whitewashed clay face. He sees no one in the area.
Jinsei walks to the walk, aware that his attempt at silence failed. But he sees no one in the area. He nimbly scales the wall and pulls himself onto its tile roof.

Fuma
Ninjutsu: BCS 11, -3 for running = 8. Succeeds. Climbing: Deftness/2 = 10. Fails.

Jinsei
Ninjutsu BCS 10, -1 for walking = 9. Fails.
Climbing - Deftness/2 = 13. Karumijutsu bonus - Skill/5 = 8. But the max bonus is +5. BCS is 18. Success.

Fuma has another option that I didn't think of. He can jump and try to grab the edge of the roof and pull himself over. He needs to jump 2 feet to succeed. (Grognardsw and I discussed this option earlier, but I wasn't very knowledgaeble about the complicated rules on High Jumps and forgot about them. Here's how they work. First, we need the char's Leaping Capability (Speed/2, ninja add their level). Fuma's Speed is 20, so 10 + 1 = 11. Vertical feet (not yards) traveled = (Strength/10)+(Effect Number of the Leaping roll/2). Fuma's Str is 25.

For example, Fuma rolls a 10. His Leaping is 11, so that's a success. Str 25/10 = 2.5, rounds to 3. The Effect Number is 1 (11 - 10 = 1), divided by 2 = .5 Fuma leapt 3.5 feet. It's possible that a bad roll can cause the jump to fail, and a very bad one a saving throw to be needed to avoid falling down. We'll deal with that rule if it comes up. This is enough crunchiness for one post.

Jinsei crouches atop the roof, eyes above the almost black indigo cloth covering his nose and mouth darkened with frustration over another night's abort, wasted effort, and another long day of risks and peril on the morrow. He waits to lend a hand to Fuma onto the roof, if it's needed. He sees one of the two peasant ashigaru guards running toward the area. The apparently senior one, han-kyu short bow in hand, wakizashi tucked at his waist. His trained eyes note the man is unarmored, but he wears the thick woolen kimono of winter, rather than the light cotton summer one.

Fuma quietly jumps to grab onto the edge of the wall's roof's tiles, but his footing on the dampish grass of the manor's mown slipped and his grasping fingers meet only empty air. He hears the sound of running feet beating the moist mown turn behind him. One of the two peasant ashigaru guards seen yesterday. The more senior-looking one with the han-kyu short bow, or the more junior one with the long yari spear? He glances at the body of the dog lying 50 yards away, the feathers and short portion of his arrow protruding from it's throat.

Fuma's high jump failed this time. He knows that he'll have two more chances before the bushi guard reaches the area of the dog. His high jump BCS is 10. Or he and/or Fuma can do something else.
There's yet another option we didn't cover, due to excessive discussion of Bushido's extreme crunchiness. (This is esoteric stuff in this situation, because Fuma only needs to jump a short height. But... Fuma could try a running high jump instead of a standing one. He would have to go back 3 yds and run, then jump. His chance to succeed at the initial Leap required would still be BCS 10. That he would add his Base Movement Allowance (BMA) to his Strength score for the initial Leap BCS. The height achieved could be quite a bit higher-- useful perhaps in future situations....
