Sebastian

Had I thought Of it I could have made a case for you as self defense. I hope the jury brings that into account.

Bill opens a letter from his mother, wishing him luck in the west, and as he'd does, he notices several bills that he'd missed in the envelope. He vows to repay her threefold once he has established himself

To help move along, the telegraph will say, "[name] dead in San Marcos shot in bar fight, would you like effects? if so, send legal statement and cosigning lawyer assigning me, Judge Jonathon Doos as lawyer. Will reply with items sending and monies owed. Will take expenses and small fee for service."
Better Call Saul Doos!

We got kind of scattered with the chronology. Here's where everyone is.

Andreas - Day 3, afternoon. At Hoffman's hotel. In the morning will owe for three nights at the hotel and nine cheap meals ($3.75 total). Hoffman and his wife treated Andreas to better quality meals.
Bill (William Moore) - Day 3, afternoon. At Hoffman's hotel. In the morning will owe for one night at the hotel and two cheap meals. ($1.50 total). Or $1.10 if had a better meal.
Charlie - Day 3, afternoon. In the stockade, serving a 6-day sentence. Owes 5 days.
Doos - Day 3, afternoon. At Hoffman's hotel. In the morning will owe for three nights at the hotel and nine cheap meals ($3.75 total). Or $4.40 if he had better meals.
Paladin - Day 3, afternoon. At Hoffman's hotel. Owes for two nights at the hotel and nine cheap meals ($3.75 total). Or $4.40 if he had better meals. In the Paladin solo thread, at Day 2, afternoon. Sheriff's office.
Sebastian - Day 3, afternoon. In the stockade, serving a 6-day sentence. Owes 5 days.

Please deduct payments for hotel, meals and fines from your character sheets. Please also deduct any ammunition used.

Andreas and Bill are stabling their horses for the night. The county has stabled Sebastian's and Charlie's horses in San Marcos. Need the status of Doos's and Paladin's horses.

During his three day stay thus far in friendly and quiet San Marcos, Paladin has roomed and taken his better meals at Hoffman’s. He has also stabled his horse. Paladin has tallied expenses for deduction from Cummins daily expense cover.

Just in case people aren't familiar with it, "ready for the glue factory" is/was a common saying about old horse. I've been told the hooves were used to make glue. Things were pretty earthy and practical back in the old farm and ranch days. Most livelihoods came from raising plants and animals, or using plants and animals to do both, and everything had value. People generally couldn't or wouldn't be especially sentimental about these things.

I checked out some blogs, videos, and reddit discussions about Boot Hill RPG. It seems the 1E was just miniatures rules for gunfights. People did wargaming tactical one-shots. 2E added some content about the cost of a meal, a bath, some gambling rules, etc. PCs still died quick, like tanks in a wargame. Still not much basis for an RPG with ongoing continuity.

Apparently (my guess) 3E was designed for more continuity between gunfights as an RPG. Maybe the mechanic about characters going unconscious at Strength 0, but not dying unless there is a Mortal wound, is a part of that. But we've seen that getting involved in shootout can involve being temporarily unconscious and laid-up and ineffective for weeks. The chance of success on a shot gets drastically reduced per Serious wound. And in Old West 1873, you don't want to be either temporarily unconscious after a gunfight or laid-up and ineffective for weeks. For safety reasons, if not personal finances ones.

For those reasons, we're going to" up the ante," as it were, in this game.
-Borrowing from a reddit reply, the first PC to reach $500,000 is the "winner." However you choose that is your choice.
-Your characters know that Texas 1873 is wide open for opportunities. Beef cattle driven to the railhead to the East in Dodge City, KS. Across most of Texas, through Indian Territory, and delivered to the stockyard.
-Gambling is a legal way of life and a profession. A traveling gambler is generally not looked down, but respected as a risk-taker, same as a gunfighter or cattle rustler. Many cards dealers are famous women.
-The pay for stagecoach crew is high because most don't live very long out on the lonely roads. And it's hard to find the bodies out there. But some choose to do it, for whatever personal and probably desperate reason of their own.

That's accurate about Germans in the Texas Hill country west and southwest of Austin and San Marcos. The town of Fredericksburg (home town of Adm. Chester Nimitz) s still mostly German, and a town named New Braunfels isn't far away.

Sebastian

Sentenced to $20 fine and six days plus -$2 doctor's fee and -$5 (refundable) for horse.

Not sure how many days he has left to serve. Deducted all fees from cash inventory.

The deputy presented Sebastian with the option of parole and from the stockade, for a chance join a posse to find and recover their stolen horses. The way I read it, Sebastian agreed and signed the parole/release document. And paid a $5 deposit for an old U.S. Army horse (that has some vision trouble), claimable upon return of the horse to the stable in San Marcos.

Now the PCs are about to go with the deputy to ask and inspect some wild and ornery teenage boys about horse theft. And possible other things from the past, near past, or current present.

I think Sebastian's fine came out to around $6.15 in the end, not $20. I'll check, give me a sec. :)

And finally, Sebastian's charges and sentences.
Reckless disregard for public safety. $8 fine, 2 days imprisonment. guilty
Discharging a firearm indoors. $12 fine, 4 days imprisonment. guilty
Assault with a weapon with intent to cause serious bodily harm. Three counts. $20 fine per count, 8 days imprisonment per count. not guilty.. Plus Dr"s fees.

Hoping to draw the rustlers out to the back where we can ambush them. Hopefully they’d surrender under the right persuasion…
