Silvanus Grove, One Tree.

Hunting 'Spiderwoman'

Dougal is blessed by Raven, the mage casting a 'Spider Climb spell to equip the ranger to scale the tree and track the fleeing Drider spiderwoman.

Aided by knowledge gained from feasting upon the dead Drider's memories. Three scale the trees, Jorly & Cadeweed following behind Dougal. They are well able to scale the heights without much fear of falling.

Below the others move according to signals given. Moriartus, Raven, Hake, Two-Birds & Ash who leads the mule behind him. They walk slow, cautious to remain as hidden as possible (Mori & TB have their cloak advantages).

The action really is concentrated upon those above. The trio prove to be competent sneaks, accuracy in following the tiny imprints of pads upon the branch bark, leaves recently brushed aside and bent under a weight, slim threads of broken silk.

Dougal: tracking skill vs 75% [1d100]=4

Dougal has a keen eye and instinct for where the spiders may have scuttled to, where they may leap from branch to branch, where they climb vertical up a web or descend a tree trunk.

You halt, each of the trio shielding themselves behind a thick trunk, observing that the next tree. This one is distinct among the many pines and tall cedars, being very broad in the trunk circumference and growing without many wide spreading branches. Rather they reach up and tangle among themselves, providing a thick canopy of leaves. It looks almost 'mushroomed' shaped (based upon the Dragon's blood tree commin in the Yemeni desert).

Dangling from one branch is a cocooned sac, which you think contains the remains of the first Drider victim. Wind chimes set around the cocoon chime softly in the breeze, the hollow pipes resounding with a dirge of solemn notes. One branch of the tree you are in reaches across so that you could access into the others canopy.

Observing you see that the host tree must be hollow for though soft, flickering candlelights can be perceived inside the network of branches, some large spiders and a hybrid figure, scuttle to and from, accessing the trunk interior via giant knot holes.

Driders & Spiders vs 1-2 [1d6]=1Ranger surprised vs 16.66% [1d100]=76

The trio of observers are themselves observed. Two large spiders, each the size of a large dog with long legs that stretch to a man's height, lurking as predators or sentinels perhaps sense their presence. One scuttles forth to challenge the intruders while the second leaps to a higher branch and begins to scuttle towards the host tree.

Below, the ground force move slowly, halting as one of the trio wave a hand to point in a certain direction. You take cover, dousing lights, sticking to shadows. Conmhaol pounces on a scuttling spider, snatching it in his mouth and tearing limbs away. The beast hisses until a staff clubs it dead. The only one you note that might alert others to your presence.

Ground force detected vs 50% [1d100]=66

Image

Actions the scout trio Jorly, Cadeweed and Dougal need to silence the two sentinel spiders before they alert any Driders.

So I will take two rounds of attacks each please. Jorly & Cade can melee the one rushing them, freeing Dougal to try and shoot the other with arrows.

Once this is resolved, I will move to any attack plan.

Actions, rolls for those engaged with spider.

Jorly darts quietly towards the spider. He isn't successful in damaging the thing but hopefully enough flurry to distract it for Cadeweed...

Raven

"Sounds good Moriartus".

He too prepares a sleep spell and watches for the signal to cast it.

Silvanus Grove, One Tree.

Hunting 'Spiderwoman'

Cadeweed gets in a minor wound in the guard spider, -3hp, Dougal crits the runaway, -9hp before sending a second shaft into the one engaged in melee. -6hp The creature luckless in its attempts to bite any of its opponents. After the brief flurry both arachnids are slain and the trio in the branches above wave those on the ground to attack.

A two pronged assault on the Drider Den begins with a wave of Sleep spells, 'Rolling Slumber' taking out the front rank of large spiders which scuttle quickly out of the tree trunk as you approach.

Spider attack: Jor or Cad [1d2]=1 bite [1d20]=2 damage [1d4]=2Spider attack: Jor or Cad [1d2]=1 bite [1d20]=9 damage [1d4]=3

Perseverance Hake invokes a martial blessing and while this thrown cudgel might make St Cuthbert turn in his saintly grave, he and Two-Birds can at least 'coup de grace' the sleeping ensorcelled spiders with little grace and lots of bludgeoning. Conmhaol can rip and tear as wel.

The Driders, for there are more than one launch at counter attack once they see the threat looming upon them. By then the group have dispatched the sleepers to eternal rest and gained upon the tree lair. This tree is probably twenty feet in diameter, a stubbly, rippled bark with a few clefts that give access to the hollow interior.

Ground force detected vs 50% [1d100]=42

Learning from experience, Moriartus Shield absorbs more arcane impacts as one Drider summons arcane missiles to assail him. There is much shouting, calling, curses.

Two-Birds: Charm spell Resistance vs 90% [1d100]=47 Raven: Charm spell Resistance vs 90% [1d100]=9

Two-Birds overcomes the mental command to "Halt!", as does Raven.

Spider vs Hake: bite [1d20]=7 damage [1d4]=4

The last remaining giant spider leaps upon the priest Hake, failing to grapple or bite him.

Ash Gnolem: invokes darts attacks [1d20]=15[1d3]=2[1d20]=16[1d3]=2[1d20]=4[1d3]=1

The Gnolem aide Ash snipes it with a volley of sharp splinters triggered from an outstretched hand. -4hp

So far so good, the Drider and spider alliance failing to stop the lair being breached and the trio above can sneak into the upper branches as those below try to press into the trunk hollow.

Actions One spider vs Ash, Conmhaol & Hake.

Mori, TB & Raven take on two Driders.

Jorly, Cadeweed & Dougal can attack from above (I will give you rear advantage or surprise advantage with a successful MS sneak check).

Cadeweed

Cadeweed will attempt the attack from the rear, but is not as quiet as he hopes.

Attack with Short Sword (off-hand) [1d20-2]=14-2=12, Damage with Short Sword S/M [1d6]=6 L [1d8]=5

I think that there might be a Bless and perhaps rear attack bonus (I did not roll the backstab macro since I failed the MS)

Silvanus Grove, One Tree.

Hunting 'Spiderwomen'

Trunk:

Conmhaol pounces, savaging the large spider. He tears and bites, pulling legs apart and raking it with claws as if digging out a burrow of rabbits. -7hp

It is one of the few successful attacks. Raven pins one with his invocation, -3hp, the figure blinking away the Light cast by Moriartus but then shafted in the rear by Dougal, -4hp. Two-Birds cannot bludgeon the figure. The Drider retaliates, unable to invoke her Levitation
upon Raven, she lunges out to strike down Two-Birds, -9hp.

Drider: MM spell resistance vs 15% [1d100]=62
Drider: spell resistance vs 15% [1d100]=12 14+ save vs Light spell [1d20+1]=12+1=13
Two-Birds: Quarterstaff [1d20+1]=1+1=2[2d4]=3[1d20+1]=3+1=4[2d4]=5Drider: spell attacks Rav, Mori, TB, Hake [1d4]=1 melee [1d3]=2 scimitar [1d20+1]=11+1=12 [1d8+1]=8+1=9

Despite advantages, neither Jorly or Cadeweed can strike. They have +2 rear advantage (jumping from above), and are within the Blessed aura, but still attacks fall short of penetrating the Drider's armour. It turns, singling out the halfling and utters a cursing hex, much like the one Raven cast,

Drider: C or J [1d2]=1 magic missile [3d4+3]=5+3=8

The strike of arcane energy hits Cadeweed squarely in the chest, energy that would shock him tremendously and halt his heartbeat, yet he shakes it off as a mere buffeting by a breeze. Silky's Scarab Brooch: soaking up the damage. The trinket clasp worn on your garments.

The encounter continues with a second blast of the horn used before to summon arachnid aid.

Actions Jorly & Cade melee one drider, Dougal can snipe at either. Hake melees with the second, Raven & Mori spell cast at a distance, so you can choose targets.

No more large spiders currently present. Conmh & Ash can guard the tree lair exterior as you fight your way inside the hollow or from in between the branches above.

Actions please.

Current health status:
Moriartus: 10/10hp.
Dougal: 15/15hp
Conmhaol the wolfhound: 8/8hp.
Cadeweed: 18/18hp
Jorly: 9/9hp

Lenore, Sith cat familiar to Raven: 4/4hp
