"Shadows Over..." - The Investigations of Josephine & Gordon

Gordon Pym "I'd like to go with you. You as I am merely a private investigator that makes me less a cop and more of a freelance seeker of truth." smiling as he explains more or less of what a P.I. is "You see not a cop I have no badge or precinct. Just an office and my I.D."

Finished with questioning the young turk who was dating Else, Josephine and Gordon leave Reggie and head back across town to Miskatonic University. The professor and the private eye agree to work together as a team to get to the bottom of Elsie's murder.

The investigators have leads with the last people Reggie thinks saw Elsie: her dorm friend Asenath Waite and Asemath's cousin Tim, whose last name is unknown. That and the unorthodox, to put it mildly, church in Innsmouth.

Josephine wants to talk with music professor Carlton Connolly about Innsmouth, given his knowledge of the town from his monograph on the curious sea-chanties of Innsmouth.

Josephine Clark shrugged "Fair enough, then let's go see him. I have a feeling this town, Innsmouth, is the place where this will come to a head and the more information we get on it, the better."

She begins to walk then stops, "So..I don't have a car or anything, I took a cab to get here. Don't suppose you have an automobile?"

Gordon Pym "Why Yes Ms.Clark I do have a car parked outside we can take. Shall we?" the P.I. leads Ms. Clark to his car and drives to the university.

Professor Carlton Connolly, lead author of the monograph on Innsmouth sea shanties, is in his office listening to recordings of Indian tribes of northern Maine.

"Good afternoon!" he says as Josephine and Gordon enter his office. He smiles at Josephine. She generally gets that reaction. "How can I help you?"

Josephine Clark smiles back at the professor, "Good day Professor. I come asking for a favor. Me and my friend here are going to be visiting Innsmouth and I know you know of that town. I was wondering if you could tell me about it? What sights to see, things to do, and I hear there is a lovely church there. Any information would be welcome."

"Ah yes, I do believe we met at the end-of-term faculty party this past May," says Professor Connolly to Associate Professor Clark. "Nice to see you again. Innsmouth you say? Hmmm, not a place I would put high on the sight-seeing list. Indeed, it wouldn't make my list. Though it is true I visited and spoke with locals there, as you may have seen in my monograph on the Curious Sea Shanty Variants of Innsmouth. A fascinating subject given the insular and isolated community of that town. It was once a great fishing and whaling town that has become a shadow of what it once was."

Prof. Connolly steps over to his desk and retrieves a notebook. He discusses a bit about Innsmouth...

"As far as churches, I admit I didn't notice the town's religious institutions. I am an atheist you know. I imagine you could research that, and more of the town's history, in the library."

Investigators have a Library Use skill roll to reflect research they do in libraries, newspapers, etc. It is probably one of he most used skills.

Gordon Pym remains silent other than the pleasantries "Good day to you Professor. I'll let Ms. Clark do the talking."

Josephine Clark listens to the professor speak about the place. She gets a vibe that the city, much like how the church pamphlet read, is weird. Be that as it may, she had to go there, for Elsie. "Thank you professor. We'll head to the library next then for some more information.

Josephine takes Gordon over to the library and begins scanning the various newspapers and history books for information about the town.

Josephine and Gordon enter the library. It is very familiar to the Assistant Professor of English, less to to Gordon. But the private knows his way around stacks in his line of work.

The pair delve into newspaper and town records looking to uncover more about Innsmouth and the Church of St. Jude.

Gordon is welcome to make a Library Use roll as well, then we'll see what the two of you turn up.

Josephine and Gordon uncover basic facts about Innsmouth such as its location, an old map, and some accounts of its fishing trade the last century. There is nothing about the Church of St. Jude. It is the monograph that provides the most background information, along with a wealth of information about old sea shanties which don't seem relevant to the investigators.

The pair leave the library. Next on their list is Elsie's friend in her dorm, or going to Innsmouth.

Josephine Clark speaks up, "I think we should go see Elsie's friend before we check out the church. She may be able to give us some more information about what Elsie did before she died."

Gordon Pym "Yes that is a good idea. I had been considering that myself. I'm also curious about Elsie's friend's cousin."

Gordon and Josesphine walk across campus to the dorm.



On Elsie's old fourth floor the resident assistant directs them to Asenath Waite's room.



She is reading a book. She turns to face the two investigators.

"Yes?"

Gordon Pym "Ah yes. We are here looking for a friend of Elsie's We are here seeking some information. I am Mr. Pym a private investigator. This is my colleague Ms. Clark." the private investigator introduces himself and points a hand at Ms. Clark when introducing her.

Josephine Clark smiles. "Hello. We just have a few questions to ask about Elsie.

"Poor Elsie, so horrible," says Asenath Waite with a sudden look of sadness on her face.

Gordon Pym "Yes and that is why we are here we're trying to find out what we can from the last people that saw her. Did you notice her acting strange at all or anyone that appeared to be following her anything unusual at all?"

[Grognardsw]

"Elsie seemed to be in good spirits. She had been enjoying her archeology studies at Miskatonic and a local dig here in Arkham. We went to a jazz show that evening. We returned that night and I saw her go to her room. That was the last time I saw her. I don't believe she was acting strange, or was followed."

Asenath dabs a hankerchief to her eyes.
