The thug's pole hits Ral in the shoulder (2 HP damage). The halfling struggles to keep his grip on the ladder (Dex. check.)

Thug charges, which gives automatic initiative win and +2 to hit.
Thug pole charge on Ral [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15, dam [1d4] = 2. Hit for 2

Ral waves his arms wildly, then screams out as he tumbles from the ladder.
I knew that gong was bad luck, he thinks as he falls...

Ral the halfling falls down the 10' pit, landing with a painful thud (2 HP damage.) From the bottom is a corridor that runs west. A flickering torch can be seen 40' distance.

Ral dusts himself and mutters a few more curses. Having lost his trusty pole, he lights another candle and draws a dagger, using the blade to tap the floor. He moves slowly toward the distant torch, searching for hidden doors as well.

Ral moves cautiously ahead, searching for traps with dagger in hand. He indeed finds a pit trap 30' down the corridor, before it turns south. That floor section is a "teeter-totter" block which pivots on a central axle to flip over and close again, depositing the victim in a covered pit if he is not quick enough to jump back from the edge or get to the other side before the slab pivots.

Ral avoids the pit trap and inspects the torch, making sure it isn't rigged to throw a fireball spell or something else equally devious.
If there are no traps, Ral snuffs his candle and takes the torch instead, then looks south along the new passage.

How do you avoid the pit trap? The whole section of floor pivots over.

Ral tries pushing down the side of the lid nearest him and slipping the blade of one of his daggers into the aperture. If he can get it in, he watches to see if the steel will hold or if the stone mechanism will snap it.

Ral sets the dagger in place to wedge the pit door mechanism. The dagger seems to be holding in place, then snaps at the hilt.

Ral mutters a few curses, then takes a few steps backward. "Best get this done quick," he says, then runs forward and launches himself across the tilting platform.

I was going to go by a Str. and Dex. averaged ability check, with a lower resulting being necessary (of which 10/13.5[14] is a fail), but decided to look up the formal jumping rules in the Wilderness Survival Guide (p. 39). Ral can do a running broad jump of 1d4+4 feet (the -1 for halflings is incorporated there). However you get an 8, you can try a Dex check to grasp the edge by your fingernails.

Hmm, that's no good. What if Ral tries to land right in the middle of the tipping panel - on the pivot point - and then does a standing jump from there? Can I even make it five feet from a standing jump?

If you make a Dex check you can land in the middle, but a standing jump is 1d4'. If you get a 3-4, You can make a Dex check to grab the edge.

Ral ties his fishing line around the middle of his candle, then presses down on the tilting platform with one of his feet to create a gap (keeping the other foot safely on firm ground!). He then begins to lower the candle into the aperture to see what can be seen.
With his brilliant feat of engineering, Ral hopes to produce this result:

Unfortunately the halfling's size prevents much of a view into the pit. His leg is only so long as to open the tilting slab a little over a foot, and maintain safe balance. That view shows the pit wall running down as the candle descends 10' deep.

Ral retrieves the candle and puts away the fishing line. He heads back down the corridor to the ladder, pulls the hacksaw from his pack, and (placing the candle on the floor) begins to saw away at the lowest rung.

If he's able to free it from the wall, he'll try the same plan as he did with the dagger: push down the tilting platform and jam the iron rung into the gap to wedge it in place.

As Ral is cutting the ladder rung he realizes it will take 15 minutes, a considerable amount in this timed Run. Incidentally it may dull his saw. But the plan is sound.
I'll hold there, so you can consider the move in light of new insight.

Ral decides that the "better late because I've been sawing rungs, than never because I fell into a pit" philosophy is the appropriate one to inform his actions here. Gritting his teeth, he saws as fast as his halfling arms can go.

Ral perseveres with the hacksaw and after 15 minutes cuts an iron rung off the shaft wall. The halfling wedges it into the pit pivot slab as before. It holds, and Ral makes his way across.

As planned, he takes the torch from the sconce beyond. The corridor then turns south for 50', ending at a door.

Ral grumbles and sets about searching for traps again as he makes his way down the corridor. He noses forward with his toes, pressing the stones for tricksy plates, concentrating on the hair on the top of his feet to see if it runs into any trip wires...
