Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
Moriartus
Confused by the odd hooting noise, the emergence of the owlwolf pack into the camp did little to ease his confusion. What manner of chimeric wolf breed is this, he thought? The pack's obviously violent intent afforded him no time to ponder it further at the moment.
If the pack is within 40 yards distance he will cast Sleep. Else if within 60 yards will cast Light, preferrably on the one facing off against Dougal. Otherwise, he holds position on the wagon.

Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
Barba
Knowing her job, Barba takes a stance between the 'owlves' and the wagon, ordering the twins to position themselves on either side of her. That way she couldn't be flanked. She's ready to receive the creatures, sword and shield at the ready.
Broadsword To Hit: [1d20+1]=6+1=7 Damage: [2d4+3]=3+3=6

April 29th 1066
Logging Camp. Blackened Forest, west of Helix. Duchy of Aerik.
2.41pm.
Weather: sunshine but cloudy, light breeze.
The hybrid wolfpack howls, a strange hooting and gnash their beaks. One creature stares down Dougal who seems mesmerized by the orange eyes staring at him. After his volley of arrows miss the creature, it pounces to the tree and using its feathered bird like front limbs begin to claw it's way up the trunk and in to the lower branches, inching it way to the kilted morsel of meat on the end of the bough.
The other trio stalking the camp take the initiative. The larger alpha male rises on the log pile and screeches. The sound frightening the hobbled horse which rears under Crabtree's control. Two-Birds uses her horse whispering skill to calm the steed and it halts fleeing away.
The owlwolf is assailed by the goliath downing slingshot of Friar John which cracks into rocky splinters upon impacting upon the beast's forehead. Moriartus gestures, casting a lullaby to further rock the creature to sleep. It is an even chance. The beasts are normally nocturnal and maybe hunting at the wrong time has tired them. The owlwolf's eyes dilate, the head bobs and then staggering under an enforced slumber, it falls comatose stretched out on the log pile.
The two medium sized others have charged, not caught in the spell area. They split to focus on the lumbering figures and in a flurry of claws and beaks, each rake the twins.Ben -2hp, Jake -1hp
The party conclude melee. Barba missing the furry feathered creatures. The Bennerjake twins show her how its done with some agricultural hacking from their battle axe swings. They give better than they get and blood and feathers fly in the air.
next actions everyone please. First to respond post the group initiative.

Initiative
Friar John rushes forward to support his traveling companion that is closest to him and engaged in melee and makes a mighty swing with the morning star.
In his mind, he prepares a prayer of healing if it looks like it's needed.

Moriartus
Moriartus faced a difficult strategic dilemna. Either attempt to retain memory of the Sleep spell, or press the advantage now to ensure the alpha wolf does not have time to recover and awaken. The larger alpha fought against his spell much more than Moriartus anticipated though, and a very solid blow from Jake failed to drop another. Against such tough creatures, the odds favored the attempt.
Retain Sleep spell.

Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
Dougal
Dougal fires again twice with his short bow.
Short Bow - To hit: [1d20+1]=5+1=6; Dmg S/M/L: [1d6]=4
Short Bow - To hit: [1d20+1]=11+1=12; Dmg S/M/L: [1d6]=6
If the beast is too close, he will rather use his sword.
Broad Sword - To hit: [1d20]=3; Dmg S/M: [2d4+1]=6+1=7, L [1d6+2]=6+2=8
He will use the bow as long as it's out of sword range.
I post the rolls for both weapons just in case, so you can choose which ones apply instead of delaying the action with several posts. The dice roller is shining today.

Logging Camp
The savagery continues with the predatory beasts though it seems they have bitten more than they can chew. At least the one climbing the tree gets to take a clump out of the ranger Dougal, whose archery skills need a bit more refining. -3hp. Friar John and Twi-Birds run to his rescue, assailing the creature with their staffs.
The trio by the log pile battle the two owlwolves clawing and biting at them. Barba hews more flesh and feathers, one wolf pounces on a twin, clawing his torso and ripping into his shoulder. Ben -5hp
The creatures hoot and rage, perhaps this perceived easy meal is not so easy.
Critters initiative [1d6]=6
If the first poster rolling group initiative can equal that score you can continue the melee otherwise the owlwolves will retreat to the forest
Alpha ... Sleep spell
OW 1 -9hp
OW2. -10hp
OW 3, unharmed but facing three opponents

Well, shoot…
If the owlf up the tree is still there, Barba will run to Dougals’s aid. Otherwise she’ll go over and give the slumbering owlf a quick and painless death.

Moriartus
Holding off on casting another spell as the owlwolves use the initiative to disengage and flee, Moriartus assesses the situation. While Barba performs a coup de grace on the alpha wolf, he gestures to Two-Birds, beckoning her to attend to the heavily injured of the twins. "Miss Two-Birds, please heal Mr. Ben, if you would." He then verifies the horses are still calmed from their fright and indicates to the wagon driver, Crabtree, to prepare for departure. Gazing into the western sky, he says, "I expect we will need to accelerate our pace to make the Hives by nightfall."

Friar John waits for Dougal to come down from his perch and gives his wounds a look over before performing a prayer of healing upon them [1d8]=6
Then aids with getting the wagon and horses ready to travel.

Dougal
Not seeing another way of escape than through his current enemy, Dougal will hack at the beast with his sword:
Broad Sword - To hit: [1d20]=16; Dmg S/M: [2d4+1]=6+1=7, L [1d6+2]=1+2=3

Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
OOC: I thought we failed the initiative and the owl wolves retreated?
Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
two certainly created enough space to back out of melee. Unlike fighting a human character, you don't get a free hit to attack from the rear at a fleeing foe.
The one in the tree you may engage as it descends before attempting to flee away.
Barba you may attempt to slay the sleeping creature. You critically wound it. However it does not die outright but the cut in the beasts carotid arteries. Mortally wounded it bleeds out staggering away. Would you like to skin it, leave it or burn it on the pyre with the exuviae?

Re: Crooked Yew and crocked bees.
Moriartus
Thought the tree wolf was able to escape. Modifying previous action to take this into account.
He almost neglects poor Dougal and his chimeric attacker, but a glint of sunlight off the ranger's sword as it slices at the scrabbling owlwolf captures his attention. If it's within either spell's range Moriartus will cast, in order of preference, Sleep or Light on the retreating creature.
Spell Recovery (17): [4d6+1]=13+1=14

Logging Camp. Blackened Forest, west of Helix. Duchy of Aerik.
2.42pm.
Weather: sunshine but cloudy, light breeze.
The last of the owlwolves still active takes s battering from the trio of people surrounding the tree. Dougal fends it off with a stab and once more the accuracy of Friar John sends a shattering stone to crash upon the beast. It is enough to send it fleeing, tail between its legs before Barba can hack it to pieces.
The large pack leader lies slain, bleeding out on a log pile. The cleric of Silvanus prays for divine blessings over the injured Ben +3hp. She mutters to him about 'owing her one'. But the bleeding stops and he regains some measure of health.
Crabtree had the horse and wagon under control. With the pyre lit and cabins searched, there seems little reason to dally at the deserted camp longer.
I will take any final actions here at the camp and then update your journey to the hives.
