Xale decides to just let fly after the imploring from his friend. He attempts to hurl his hammer into the door way from the side of tanner.

Hurl Dwarven Thrower [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23 damage [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2*2+11 / [1d4] = 1*2+11

Natural 20
Xale's rate of fire is 5/2 with his weapon specialization. So you may want to make another roll.

Eventually I may stop pointing this out and just go with what you roll. ;)

FYI, here's what I have for Tanner's and Xale's attack bonuses with the infernal magic item penalty:

Tanner: Frost brand: +1/+1, str: +1/+3. Total: +2/+4
Xale: Dwarven hammer (hurled): +1/+1, gauntlets: +3/+6, specialization: +1/+2. Total: +5/+9.

Please let me know if I'm miscalculating.

For the hammer my DMG (page 168 of Dec 1979 edition) says +3/+3 in the hands of a dwarf, double damage against everything except giants/ogres which it does triple damage against. My gauntlets and specialization are correct for a total of +7/+11 and double or tripe damage (on the damage roll). Range is 6" and returns.

A little while ago I divulged that all magic items with bonuses are at -2 to those bonuses because you are two planes away from the plane in which they were forged. So you're right about Xale's base bonuses, but at the moment they're +5/+9 because the hammer is effectively +1/+1 while in this infernal plane (but it still does double damage).

Sorry, missed that. Still trying to decide my action, thinking it might be time for a cure spell on Tanner since I am likely to hit him at least once if not twice if I take 3 shots into the darkness.

FYI, in case it affects your decision, I rolled 1d4 to determine who Xale's attacks hit, with 1=Tanner, 2-4=monsters 1-3. So at the moment there's a 1 in 4 chance that any ranged attack into melee hits Tanner.

FYI, I've made a small adjustment to the critical hit rules:
Critical Hits and Misses
On a natural 20, the attack does double damage or max damage, whichever is higher.
It always seems a little anticlimactic when someone rolls a critical hit and a 1 for damage, increasing that damage to 2. So now a critical hit will always do at least maximum damage.

That is a good point. I might have to change this in my games then again I use a crit hit table with another % die roll involved. I might say a crit hit should do at minimum half max dmg.

Good rule. In my table top games we use max damage plus an additional die for natural 20's. We also prefer our combat a bit more deadly so we use exploding dice for damage as well.

So, continuing our adventures with overly complicated attack rolls:
I agree with your math.

However, it would be easier for me to track your rolls if you could split out the base hammer damage from the bonuses, like this:

[1d4+1]*2+9 / [1d4]*2+9

That way I can see the multiplication and addition operations separately.

Nope.

Norjax, Rool's player, hasn't been on in almost a week. I'll NPC Rool tomorrow if necessary.

Any other actions, or is everyone waiting for Rool to check the chest?

Risdac and Malibran are at the brown hexagon. Everyone else is at the green star:

I was worried that my many-years long streak of not being eaten by a grue was going to end. Safe for another day!
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

On opening doors with a 10' pole:

It'll work if the door swings freely and doesn't have a latch. But a 10' pole isn't sturdy enough to withstand and transmit enough force to open a door that is stuck, locked, barred, or just latched.

I don't know what this means. Could you explain what you're trying to do?

FYI, the door opens away from this room.
