Samuel is glad to see the ship finally slowing, thinking to himself, that will at least reduce the number and severity of injuries. Seeing the lifeboat launching not being a total disaster is a relief also, though he is disappointed to see the number not fully loaded. And also painfully aware there will not be enough for all the passengers. Hopefully the ship will run aground and not break up so a more orderly evacuation will be possible.

Main Deck: Parlor

Diana smiled and accepted the respectful bow. "A true gentleman is modest; thank you, Reginald."

The deck shuddered with relative stillness as the boilers were taken off-line. Diana gave a small sigh. "That's relieving; tugs were coming abreast and the captain hadn't yet ordered all stop. Reginald, if I might impose? I tasked young Claude to organize the Thirds. While he seemed enthusiastic I feel he could benefit from an experienced, and proven, mentor. Claude Herve, curly haired lad. Would you be so kind?"

Diana toed her bag closer to the wall. "Send anyone to me if they have questions; I'll be right here."

Cycle 1062 (Autumn): Day 33: Shift 2: Hour 5:45 [Steamship New Dawn: 45N,25W]
Upper Deck: Staterooms
Phineas opened the small portable kit he keeps on his person for just such emergencies, and skilled fingers quickly opened the locked chest ... [sigh] and the locked box inside the locked chest. His persistence was rewarded as he stuffed numerous pieces of expensive jewelry into his pockets and headed towards the next stateroom. Phineas suspected that the jewels in his pocket cost nearly Cr 100,000.

The door to Stateroom 2 was unlocked, so Phineas swung the door open. There were several expensive items in plain view on a small desk. Before Phineas could enter the room, there was a loud crash from one of the decks below him and the explosive sound of shattering wood. As Phineas reached the desk and snatched up a Gold writing pen (Cr 25), the ship violently lurched to the side and began to lean to one side.

**********
Upper Deck: Lifeboats
The crew had begun escorting the Second Class Passengers up from the Main Deck and everything was proceeding in an organized fashion. The wind and waves rocked the ship, creating some challenge for the passengers climbing the stairs, but nothing unexpected. From your vantage point on the Upper Deck, you could see the approach of a small fleet of fishing boats. Even if they could not dock, any passengers forced into the water would not be there long. Things were looking up.

Then the unthinkable happened. Everyone expected the rocks or a sandbar. No one expected the crash of a 12 pounder against the side of the ship or the ball of flame that clung unnaturally to the side where it had struck. Turning around, Silas saw the Sloop rigged ship that had fired at them from a single bow gun at just over a kilometer away. The flames reduced the calm of the passengers, but they did not panic. Crewmen began dragging boats to the opposite side of the ship so they could launch without being burned in the flames. Several of the men among the Passengers assisted.

**********
Main Deck: Parlor
Reginald left to assist the Third Class Passengers and never returned, either encountering no trouble or dealing with it himself.

Diana was excited as the crewmen arrived to begin escorting Second Class Passengers up to the lifeboats. They were carefully alternating men and women so that the gentlemen could assist the ladies climbing the ladder in the storm. Passengers had just started up the ladder when a deafening explosion tore through the parlor. Large splinters of wood, some as small as a finger and other larger than a man's arm, flew from the far wall. Several of the people were injured, some seriously. Diana caught a splinter in the abdomen, but the cut was not deep and she quickly got the bleeding to stop (minor wound).

Several minutes later, the ship lurched violently and began to permanently lean away from side where the wall exploded. [Starboard wall exploded and caught fire; Ship leaning to Port].

**********
Lower Deck: Boiler Room
Thank you, Chief. said Jo.

The Chief just nodded. Then began a long wait for a call from the Bridge that never came. Just the quiet of the engines, the noise of the storm and waiting.

Until the percussion of a broadside reverberated through the ship. Thank goodness the impact came from the Main Deck, there was no vital equipment on that deck and it was well above the water line. Someone was either a bad shot, or firing at long range. More than one person wondered if the Captain had been right about the speed.

Those thoughts abruptly ended when the bottom struck a large rock that lifted half the ship a meter out of the water and threw it to one side with a violence that even the waves could not match. When the ship didn't right, Jo knew that they were in trouble. Then came the screams from the Commons and ankle deep water in the boiler room.

"Get out of here, everyone!" shouted the Chief Engineer as he grabbed the tube to inform the Bridge.

The ship just kept leaning and the water kept slowly and steadily rising.

Main Parlor

Diana muttered something un-ladylike as she clipped her gear back off on a table leg. "Now would be a wonderful time to pull out one of those military sniper rifles." She said to herself. Instead she pulled out her twelve mil carbine and an extra box of ammo. While not long range at all, the rounds were the same as her pistols.

"At least I'll run out of everything at the same time." She said. For a while she watched the oncoming ship through the splintered wall. She had to brace herself as the deck leaned more to port but that was the good thing about sea craft, things were put in place such that they stayed there. Her fingers idly press checked the lever actions tube capacity. It would take the pirate a bit to get into range but maybe she could buy the passengers a little more time. Maybe she'd get lucky and they would bunch together, hungry for prey. Better chance of hitting them then.
OOC: Diana has a 45 caliber lever action carbine, same rounds as her pistols. There's nothing special about the carbine and she's only an average shot so she will wait until she has a good chance of hitting someone before she reveals her position.

What of all of that do we see from the rescue tug?

Phineas T. Codswallop:

In the first stateroom, his little head dancing with thoughts of grandma's heirloom jewelry, Phineas expertly employs lockpicks and tools once owned by a death-defying escape artist until his untimely passing...

...also by drowning.

When Phineas opens the second lockbox, his eyes glimmer coolly like two more glittering gems. His mouth moves like it's tasting something it likes, and then it whispers, "Eureka."

In the second stateroom, as the ship starts to upend, Phineas rights himself, smooths out his ruffled mustache, and looks about for a porthole and something that might float.

Silas "Ignatz" Kitt: "ABANDON SHIP!"

"Passengers! You have been issued life preservers! If you are sound of body, throw yer life preserver in the water and dive it—don't wear it when you dive or you'll crack yer ribs when you hit—then make your way to the approaching boats! The ships' boats are for the infirm only!"

"Crew! Step lively! Elderly, sick, pregnant, and children in the boats! One crewmate per boat to take care of the infirm. Don't rush now! She'll still take her time sinking—but if she goes fast enough to create suction, make sure the swimmers and the boats are clear. The rest of you! Get below decks and make sure everyone has a clear path to escape! Step along now!"

He stares around, hoping that he has discharged his duty enough to dismiss himself so that he can run after his possessions. His manuscript! His books! His mother's cameo! The silk-lined jacket his father gave him when he graduated! All in his trunk. Did he have the trunk's waterproof-seals in place?

He shakes himself from this selfish reverie and realizes that its strange that he hasn't encountered a more senior officer. Someone should be down here doing the job he has been attempting to do. He sets off running to find the Captain and his Officers.

Jo

As the water begins to rise, Josephine looks around the boiler room, making sure that everyone can head for an exit.

She sloshes through the rising water, stopping at her bunk to grab her trunk. Good job I'm used to packing light. My whole life is in here. she thinks as she heads for the stairs. She hurries- but forces herself not to panic as she climbs.

On deck, she'll look for an open spot in a lifeboat. IF she sees none, she'll toss her trunk overboard, then dive after it and use it as a float while she paddles for shallow water.

Cycle 1062 (Autumn): Day 33: Shift 2: Hour 5:55 [Salvage Tug: 45N,25W]
ffilz wrote:What of all of that do we see from the rescue tug?
(Just for the record, you were not forgotten. The action just centered on events inside the ship more than outside in the last post and I knew that the Tug would spring into action in the next post.)

From the safety of the wheelhouse on the Tug, the howl of the wind and the sting of the horizontal rain didn't feel so bad. It was Doc's stomach that told him of the ferocity of the storm around you. Through the window, a mountain of water nearly two stories tall and three times the length of the great steamship quickly lifted the Tug and then dropped it again in a cycle that repeated every 7 seconds. Even the great Steamship was lifted and dropped by the great waves as they rushed past faster than the ship could steam. Then the paddlewheel stopped turning and the ship decelerated. The Tug moved closer.

Through the window Doc watched as the lowering lifeboats were carefully timed to release in rhythm with the waves. As all seemed under control, people rushed from the second deck cabin onto the ladder to the boats stored on the Top Deck in a state of panic and chaos. Almost immediately, a bright red glow appeared to illuminate the underside of the dark sky from the far side of the ship. The way that light danced and flickered, it could only be a fire.

"Something's happened inside her. Hold on, we're moving in closer." shouted the Tug Captain as he steered the boat to intercept the great ship.

Through the window, Doc saw a man on the deck of the tug with a spyglass watching the Steamship. Doc stepped outside to borrow the glass.

On deck, it was a hot, humid 95F (35C) and even the rain was warm. Through the glass, you saw many of the people emerging from the second deck appeared to be injured and bleeding. With little warning, Doc was nearly thrown to the deck as the Tug suddenly maneuvered sharply away from the Ship. Doc heard a tremendous screech and crack as the ship was dragged across some underwater rocks by an ill timed wave. When the Tug resumed its course to intercept the Ship, the ship was leaning away from the flames and towards the Tug.

**********

The Tug made careful last minute adjustments to synchronize with the Ship and prepared to make contact. Doc could see passengers on the lowest deck jumping into the water clinging to crates to keep them afloat and passengers on the middle deck running to the upper deck for a boat and the lower deck to leap into the water. Half a dozen Fishing Boats had arrived and were pulling people out of the water. The rigging prevented the sailboats from getting too close to the heaving Ship.

"All right boys" shouted the Captain "As we get close, jump aboard and get those engines!"

Burly men with long crowbars lined up prepared to board the Ship. When the wave brought the Tug and Ship briefly together, several leapt aboard and immediately began tearing paneling off the side near the stern.

"Get ready as we come along again." shouted the Captain.

Several men prepared to jump as another man began to prepare a block and tackle on a long boom.

[Doc can remain with the Salvage Tug, or leap aboard the Steamship ... as he chooses.]

Cycle 1062 (Autumn): Day 33: Shift 2: Hour 6:00 [Steamship New Dawn: 45N,25W]
Upper Deck: Staterooms
Phineas located a small but very sturdy wood trunk. Quickly dumping out the few items of clothing within as unnecessary weight, he resealed it to make a very serviceable flotation device. Admiring the amenities of this particular cabin, Phineas unlatched and slid open the double glass doors that revealed a small railing overlooking the sea. The rain blowing through the opening was seasonably warm, if a bit heavier than one would like. It was the waves that posed something of a challenge. From the Upper Deck, it was anywhere from 10' (3m) to 20' (6m) to the water. Neither was pleasant, but one was considerably less pleasant a fall than the other.

Above you, they were still attempting to load and launch the last few lifeboats from the Top Deck.

**********
Upper Deck: Lifeboats
Silas has done the best he can. At this point the tilt of the ship makes removing the remaining lifeboats from the burning side of the ship and transferring them to the overhanging side of the ship nearly impossible. The evacuation of the Passengers by lifeboat has nearly reached its conclusion. At this point the passengers had begun to panic and leap into the water. The crew attempted to explain the importance of timing, but some leapt into a wave trough and hit far harder than was necessary.

As Silas reached the ladder to the Bridge on the top deck, he encountered a stranger ... the Pilot delivered by boat ... climbing down the ladder and mumbling "Damn fool."
Chaotic argument could be heard coming from the Bridge.

**********
Main Deck: Parlor
Diana watched the ship through the window. It made no real attempt to intercept the Steamship, but just sailed a generally parallel course. A cloud of smoke from near the bow announced the firing of another shot ... breathless seconds passed ... [splash] it fell short.

No expert at sailing, but that pirate seemed to be carrying a lot of canvas aloft for the size of the ship. Uncommon in any weather, but even an amateur knew that ships reefed in canvas in heavy weather. As she watched the ship, suddenly nearly half her sails disappeared in an instant. The mast probably gave way ... but Diana though she might have seen an object streaking towards the ship just before the sail disappeared.

With reduced sail, the pirate seemed to be changing course and heading away.

Strange noises had started to come from deep in the hold of the ship and she was leaning steadily further. Wisps of smoke from the fire burning on the outside had begun to appear on the inside of the hull where Diana kept watch.

**********
Lower Deck: Ladder
With the waves sometimes below the keel and other times halfway up the Main Deck, just getting to the water without being swept uncontrollably off the ship involved some climbing and some timing. Seaman Herve was helping the last of the Third Class passengers time their exit with the waves as they swam from the ship, clutching crates to stay afloat, and paddled towards waiting fishing boats as close as was safe.

Towards the Stern, a Steam Tug with a hoist was docking to unload men with crowbars alongside the Engines. The men tied off and immediately went to work prying planking off the ship to expose the Engine. Jo could either swim for a fishing boat or aft to the Tug.

Doc realizing he might be adding to those who need rescuing will jump aboard the steamship. Certainly there are injured aboard who need his care and might be saved with it.

Once aboard, he will look for injured folks he can get to without being trampled by those attempting to abandon ship. He will focus on those whose injuries are serious but with a some quick attention will then be able to evacuate themselves, only if the situation stabilizes will it be worth tending to those who won't be able to evacuate.

Diana removed the round from the carbine's chamber and secured the gun with her gear. She really wasn't sure about the pirate ship; did they know when the reefs began and intentionally ran merchants into them in collusion with the landsmen? What happened to the sails?

Who knew? It wasn't her issue anymore; water was now the challenge. Getting to another ship. Her life preserver would keep her and her meager gear afloat for a while. She made sure the straps were secure on her pistols as she found the far side of the sinking ship. Claude was already in the water, she looked around for Reginald. She caught a rise and jumped.

Not for the first time Diana suggested she learn to swim. And to pack more flotation when she sailed. It was a lot of energy to get to the closest fishing boat. Even more energy to help the dark skinned woman and her infant child not drown while Diana herself tried not to drown. In the end strong hands pulled them up and pushed them into the rest of the crowd.

"Thank you." Diana managed to day before she was too worn out to even talk.

Phineas T. Codswallop doesn't like the view from the porthole. He secures his newfound riches and flees the staterooms, scurrying to the upper decks to see what his chances look like there.

Jo

Jo fought down panic, remembering the first time she'd been swept off the deck of a cargo ship as a child. She'd nearly drowned that day, but had been rescued by Third Mate Wooster, who managed to get a line around her.

Seeing the rescue tug, she gripped the sides of her trunk and kicked for it, gasping for breath every time the waves washed past her.

Cycle 1062 (Autumn): Day 33: Shift 2: Hour 6:10 [Steamship New Dawn: 45N,25W]
Bridge
"What's the situation?" shouted Ignatz to the passing Pilot.
"Inmates are rinnin' the 'sylum, ifin ya ask me!" he shouted back. "They refuse to listen, the lot of 'em just argue Pirates and Rocks. Well, let 'em all sink an' drown, says I, but I ain't goin down with 'em." He momentarily grabbed your arm as you passed "I'm gettin off the ship as fast as I can, and if ya know what's good fer ya, y'll do the same." He released your arm and hurried to the side waving and shouting to the Pilot Gig. When he caught their attention and they started towards the Ship, he lept into the water and began swimming towards the Gig.

The sound of voices arguing loudly came from the door to the Bridge just ahead. Ignatz stuck his head in and found the First officer and Second officer arguing "needing speed to escape the pirates" and "the reckless danger of the rocks" and "need to evacuate everyone" and "need to man the pumps and stay with the ship". The captain just sat in a chair smoking a pipe and writing in the ship's log.

**********
Top Deck: Lifeboats
Phineas arrived on the Top Deck only to discover that all of the lifeboats that can be launched, had already been launched. Several seamen were attempting to untangle the ropes from the davit of a boat that was not able to be launched. There are about 30 people waiting around hoping to get in a boat that only holds 20. Many of those waiting appear to be injured.

On the other side of the ship, three lifeboats are burning as the flames now tower above the ship.

**********
Main Deck: Parlor
Doc arrived in the Second Class Parlor on the Main Deck, ground zero for the explosion, and saw a sight common on warships and never comfortable on any passenger ship. A cannon shot hat struck the hull and sent a deadly spray of splinters finger to arm size out in a cone through the room. The uninjured passengers had evacuated already with the injured passengers able to walk. Two crewmen and one civilian nurse remained treating those too badly wounded to walk.

A quick triage scan of their condition reveals:
Patient #1: A man who is seriously wounded and will die without treatment, but can be stabilized for transport (easy task: 6+) and treated when you have all of your equipment (average task: 8+).
Patient #2: A woman with light wounds that can be treated with the equipment available and will make a full recovery without further treatment (average task: 8+).
Patient #3: A woman who is dying and requires immediate surgery to save her (roll 12+ on 2d6+3).
Patient #4: A woman who is critically injured and requires immediate care to stabilize her (hard task: 10+) and surgery when you have all of your equipment (hard task: 10+).
Patient #5: A man who is critically injured and requires immediate care to stabilize him (hard task: 10+) and surgery when you have all of your equipment (hard task: 10+).

[Choose your patient and make your roll and tell me what happens ... I love a good story. :) ]

**********
Lower Deck: Salvage Tug
Jo was never better than a fair swimmer. After all, that is why God created boats. This time, she clung white knuckled to her trunk as if her life depended on it ... and as her head went under and she emerged coughing seawater, she knew it did. This was not weather for anyone to be swimming in.

As a wave lifted and bounced her off the side of the Steam Barge, strong calloused hands lifted her from the water ... still clinging tightly to her wooden trunk ... and set her on the deck. "Stay outa the way" he growled, shoving her towards a clump of survivors huddled in one out-of-the-way corner. "This ain't no pleasure cruise, this is a workin' boat."

An old man coiling a rope near the 'passengers', glanced down and saw the grease stains around your nails. "Tell His-self you know your way around machines and are wanting a piece of the salvage" he nodded towards a large man in the wheelhouse. "Better to be crew earning a share, than unprofitable freight getting in the way." he winked.

**********
Fishing Boats
Diana and the others huddled in the bottom of the Fishing boat. It was wet and smelled terrible, with no seats for people, just the boards that had carried out the bait and back the catch and absorbed the smell many Cycles of use. Fortunately for Diana, the boat could hold far more weight than it had room for people, so it quickly filled and sailed light and fast back to its home port.

**********
Lifeboats
Several Lifeboats attempted to rescue swimmers. In one instance, a large group of swimmers quickly overwhelmed the boat and capsized it. Several of the earliest Lifeboats to be launched, were far below capacity, but rather than attempting to rescue survivors, they actively worked to place a greater distance between themselves and those in the water ... an effort that redoubled after the one lifeboat capsized.

Staying at the threshold, Silas yells into the cabin: "Sirs! The ship is stove by rock and cannon-shot! The engines are down! Crew and passengers are abandoning ship! We should join them before we sink or are captured by pirates!"

He cranes his neck to take in more of the scene. Officers can be notoriously short-sighted, but this level of obliviousness is outright farcical! Does he see anything that might have addled the officers' wits?

Ooh, a nice dilemma. Awesomeness says try and save #3, prudence says try and save #4...

I'm going for it...

Seeing a patient who has a slim chance if Doc intervenes now he approaches patient #3 and tries to remove a 6" shard of planking from her chest. It will require quick work to stem the flow of blood when he removes the shard. Doc removes the shard and starts to stem the bleeding, but there is too much damage and he is not able to work fast enough to save her: [2d6+3] = 7+3 = 10 vs 12+

If there is still a chance, he will move on to patient #4...

Top Deck:

Lit by the towering flames, P.T. Codswallop helpfully cries in the official, booming voice of a seasoned ringmaster: "Ladies and gentlemen! This way to the egress! No pushing! No shouting! Remain calm! But please hurry! Your very lives may depend upon it!"

He points a tiny hand toward the rear. "Hurry! Hurry! Plenty of lifeboats left in the back of the boat! Make way! Godspeed!" After the expert misdirection, Phineas will quietly wait for the crew to untangle his lifeboat. Just in case events overtake them, he looks around for anything that might float.

Jo

For a moment, Jo just stands aside, bent over, coughing water out of her lungs. She could feel herself getting cold in her wet clothes. Even as she's coughing and hacking, she nods to the helpful sailor and attempts a smile.

She shoves her trunk into a secure corner where it won't wash overboard, brushes her wet bangs off her forehead, and presents herself to the large man in the wheelhouse. She stands tall in her wet clothes, and looks him in the eye. Sir! I am Josephine Baxter-Smith. I was working passage on that steamer, and am officially asking for a chance to do the same here. I am well-versed in all the machinery below-decks on a ship like this, and have been working trade ships since I was old enough to hold a spanner. Please, sir! She holds her posture, but lets a little bit of 'sweet, innocent young lady' creep into her expression.
