Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Dorobo gets a look at the poor creature and shrugs to himself as he envisions it's demise. He pans he will spend the rest of this round panning this hooded lamp about scouting to see if there might be any other creatures or things in the woods (and considering to himself an escape route should for some reason the poor beat quickly make meat of his compadres)...
It doesn't seem anyone can understand what the big thing is saying anyway right?
After getting a look about, if seeing nothing of worry, he'll set his lamp in such a way as to have a good light on the ogre and ready an arrow for the next round, if it is still alive. (and hoping perhaps there is a chance for parlay and/or at the very least his formidable companions dispatch it without too many casualties)

Delgrot "That durned thing looks like an ogre least what I've been told of em." the dwarf prepares to "bless" the party before they start attacking.

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Round 1
Vizug, the giant ogre, slams his giant trunk-like club down at Unna, whose skill against such large creatures allows her to easily eludes the thunderous crash. "Me klubben må være ødelagt" the giant roars, clearly angry at its ineffectiveness. Unna shifts into position and, spying an opportunity, runs her long sword deep into the ogre's side. "Die ogre!" she yells, relishing the success of her strike.
Roderick grabs his sword and rushes past the parked cart and quickly joins the fray, issuing a powerful slash into the creatures ample gut, slicing it open and spilling some of the creatures innards. "Vizug beklager," it sputters before collapsing into a motionless and bloody mess. A search of the creature produces 11 gold pieces in a small sack tucked into a fold in its hide armor.

Roderick looks at the ogre corpse sadly. "Such a shame," he says, shaking his head. "I can't help but think we could have avoided conflict and death if only we'd been able to talk to the brute instead of attacking it on sight."

Delgrot "Be that as it might Roderick, some of us rushed to tha attack an wasn't much we could do to stop em." the dwarf chimes in before going back his "prayers" to try and regain some spells before the sun rises.

Jaroo looks over the creature and examines the tracks to get an idea of which way it came from.

Unna
"It was an ogre sneaking up on us, you seriously wanted me to try and have a conversation with it? Next time do you want me to wait until it smashes someone?" Unna walks off in a huff.

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
"Yes, I would like us to wait until we know that a creature is hostile before attacking it," answers Roderick. "'Act like everyone is your enemy, and everyone will be.'" The paladin says the words as if he's quoting scripture. "If we just kill everything that doesn't look like us, we're no better than monsters ourselves. We might have been able to reason with the ogre. We had it outnumbered and outmatched. We had the element of surprise. But instead of using that advantage to find out if the the ogre was hostile, we just killed it. Maybe that was unavoidable, if none of us spoke the same language as the ogre. But it is still unfortunate.
"I hope, by the way, that this was not a sign of how we intend to solve all our problems. I generally have more success talking before killing than the other way around. The dead are poor conversationalists."

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Dorobo, one of the first, if not the only to loot the body, pockets one of the gold and lays the rest out in the light for the others to grab a piece. As strange as the words come in contrast to his guiltless looting of the body..
"I have to agree with the knight in general, but this was a difficult case. When it comes to ogres at least I think a dwarf's intuition is a good bet."
He mutters in dwarf after his co-watcher. (should I PM that since not everyone speaks dwarven?)

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
"You mean like your mother screamed when I was with her last night?" answers Roderick in dwarven. Apparently there's nothing in the Virtues of the Avatar that forbids "your mother" jokes. There is, however, something against letting dwarves think you don't understand their language when you do.shiffd wrote:"An ogre's an ogre eh?? I wasn't about to chat him up in the middle of the night.... Let's just hope when the knight get's killed on watch he screams like a little girl so that we all properly wake up before it's our turn to die."
"Be careful what you assume," he continues in the common tongue. "I, for example, had assumed that dwarves value honor and don't have to start a fight to win it. I will not assume anything is hostile without evidence—although, if all dwarves attack ogres on sight, I can see why an ogre wouldn't stop to chat."
"But as much as I would enjoy a debate—in common or in dwarvish—the hour is late. And a conversation like this should happen over drinks. So get some rest, everyone. Who should I scream like a little girl at to wake for the next shift?"
Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Nexus pats Roddy on the back and nods. From
Now on, you go and chat to everything we come across and see if it’s hostile. We can wait and see a ways back a bit in case it is and then come to your rescue. That’s the plan.
With that he tries VERY hard not to roll his eyes and then goes and picks up a gold.

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Day 3: Morning
"Such a shame," Roderick says, shaking his head, adding that he believes the entire conflict could have been avoided if they had attempted to parley with the brute instead of attacking on sight -- which sparks a discussion on the subject, including Unna half-sarcastically asking if she should wait until the creature smashes someone before reacting. "'Act like everyone is your enemy, and everyone will be," Roderick adds before the dwarf storms off.
Electing to not get involved in the debate, Jaroo begins examining the ogre and looks to determine whether any tracks were left behind, but finds it's too dark to do so in the middle of the night and plans to conduct this search the following morning.
Roderick, still worked up after his earlier debate, assumes the next watch along with Alara, which ends without incident.
The following morning, the rest of the group is roused from their sleep just as the sun begins to break on the horizon. As the spell casters begin their preparations to ready their daily spells, Jaroo returns to the site of the fallen ogre and is easily able to spot tracks left by Vizug in the immediate area. He can follow them back to where it was first spotted easily enough, but the tracks become very confusing and difficult to discern beyond that last known point. The druid suspects it might be possible to continue to backtrack the ogre's progress, but it admits it will not be certain, and doing so will force the group to deviate from the road.
Everyone begins the new day at full health.

Note: I've added a new 'Memorized Spells' house rule. If you play a spellcasting class, please take note.
Also, please make sure the 11 gold pieces end up distributed and added to the respective character sheets.

Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Delgrot wakes in the morning says a morning prayer to his god and begins packing his campsite up and then eats. "Well another day another adventure eh?" he says to anyone nearby. "Somethin' is nagging at me about that ogre an wonderin' what he said last night. If only we could speak it's language." he trails off shaking his head.

Nexus memorises his colour and illusion magic and then eats and packs up his camp.
The ogre has a lair for sure. It’s doubtful he would travel too far away without supplies. the gnome surmises with a shrug.

Alara packs up her kit "It's a shame, I speak a number of languages, but ogrish isn't one if them"
Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Roderick nods and smiles warmly at Delgrot's and Alara's observations about language barriers. But he does not belabor his point any further.
"Let not the trinkets of ogrish beasts distract us!" exhorts the paladin in his best rallying-the-troops baritone. "Jane's fate depends on us! Let us away with all due haste!"

Delgrot nods agreeing with the paladin. "Aye, I'm not much fer taking items from ogres. Lets continue on our trek to the wizard shall we? Well once we've all eaten that is." he says with a wink and a smile.

Jaroo points out that "the tracks go that way. They get a little muddled after a bit. Not sure where they are heading."
Re: Session 2: Red Larch to Westbridge
Dorobo seems in a foul mood for some reason.
"Sure stinks around here you know? Leaving an ogre corpse out in the open like that... and so near the road. Rather un-knightly thing to do. It will attract beasts of all sort for the carrion, don't you think? Then of course if the ogre has any friends they will surely wonder who killed their buddy, and be looking for them to waylay the next set of innocent travelers for no good reason.
I say we find this ogre cave, let his buddies know what has transpired and well hopefully they'll be of a size and strength to make the burial take less than the day or two it would take us to dig such a hole or build a pire, by which time the ogre will be rather ripe anyway.
As far as diplomacy goes, well the fine knight has offered himself up as the voice of reason and moral right and so on, and seems to be educated a fair bit beyond the rest of us mere mortals. Let him have a go at it. I figure if the ogre has friends, and worst comes to worse they kill the knight as he attempts to parlay it will at least give us just cause to dispatch the rest of them. And no tin-man to complain about what we do with their trinkets when all is said and done. Or we can just leave this massive slab of flesh here to rot in the sunlight like proper cowar.... err I mean knights.
There is also the possibility that it was this very ogre who captured our fine Jane and whoever had whisked her away in the night."

Ardium speaks up.
I agree. The tracks dont answer that for us. I suggest spending an hour trekking through those footprints. If he had her, I doubt she'd be far away. And with the hours passed, she should know he aint coming back.
