Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
Freeday, The 5th of Goodmonth
Getting Situated
Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Sweaty
About thirty or so people rush off to find a container for their ration of goat milk, making Liam cringe a bit, knowing full well that he wont get enough for that many people. One by one they return with pails, glasses, tin cups; anything that might hold a few sips of the white gold.
Raythan sees the crowd amassing and returns to save the day. He carries a full bushel basket covered with a blue towel and lays it down on the ground in front of Liam and the onlookers as the beekeeper finishes up his chore of milking. Once the others see that their share of the milk will be miniscule, Raythan starts to snicker. "No eggs yet, so it appears that I must bail you out again, friend. Please, allow me."
As Liam pours out a tiny amount of milk for each of his helpers, Raythan unveils his surprise. His basket is filled with green globes of some fruit that Liam has never seen before. Great green globes, about the size of a cantaloupe, covered in bumps and warts like a gourd.
"This is called breadfruit, and it rivals the Waybread of my forefathers. One of these fruits will feed a family of four, and the pulpy meal will stick with you for a good long time. The Phanaton gave me these, apparently they grow abundantly up in the high leaves of their trees. So, since you and I cant eat this many of them before they spoil, I will donate them along with your meager offering of milk. That way the good folks that helped out here today wont go hungry tonight."
Raythan starts handing out one breadfruit to each of the townsfolk.
"It doesn't have a lot of flavor to it, but if you roast them just right over an open fire, one of these fruits will fill you up for the whole day!"
We can make rolls for eggs and babies etc. as they arise. There wont be any action from these animals until at least tomorrow due to all the chaos of moving around and such. Anything you want to do to increase the chances for reproduction will definitely come into play.

Liam smiles as Reythan comes to the rescue. Breadfruit? Truely these People of the Trees, these Phanaton are true friends and saviors. he says loudly enough to be heard by all. He hands out the last bit of milk with an apologetic smile. More to come soon, my friends. More to come. Maybe tomorrow we will even have some eggs. After fruit has been passed out: Friends, is there any refuse or scraps of any kind that I might be able to gather for animal feed? I know that is a tall order given the overall circumstances, but I guess it is worth asking. If there are any of you that can help to watch the animals overnight or help me tomorrow with picking places for them to graze, maybe a good place to clear some underbrush? We can get them fat while improving some of the nearby lots to make them more serviceable, and of course I plan to collect all the manure from the pens which if free to take for helping in your fields.

Holy cow had no idea there were that many, I was thinking like 8 or 10OGRE MAGE wrote:About thirty or so people rush off to find a container for their ration of goat milk, making Liam cringe a bit...

Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
The first bushel of breadfruit goes fast, with folks coming out from everywhere to brag about how much they helped. (even some that didn't help at all) Seeing that this may start a problem, the half-elf goes back inside to retrieve a second basket of them. Eventually everyone standing around, even those who weren't really helping, get themselves a breadfruit to roast and eat. Raythan whispers to Liam as the majority of the crowd starts to disperse.
"That is all that I have form the treefolk. I was going to give them away anyhow, I'm just glad the timing worked out for us a little better this way. You are really starting to look like a hero to these people. Let me see if I can help with that too."
He shouts over the crowd. "Remember, you cant eat the rinds, but you can bring them right back here and toss them to the pigs. Those animals will eat almost any.....no.....they will eat anything!"
8 people remain behind, all of them farmer types who aren't strangers to hard work and long hours. Their leader speaks up. "We could set up a watch schedule for you so you can get some rest. I think we should have 2 guards on duty out here at all times throughout the night. Like you said, if one or two of these fine critters goes missing or gets eaten by something out here, that will set your breeding operation back months!"
Another agrees. "Ya, our fields aint doing worth a shit anyway, so some of us could stay up tonight and help keep watch over things!"

Thank you, Brother Reythan. I am happy to have you here. Things are obviously much worse than even your note made me realize. I just wish I could have had move to give. I fear it would take a hundred pigs to fix this here and now.
As to fields... I always found it funny that crappy dirt can be made less crappy by directly adding more crap to them he winks. Black gold... as my cousin once told me... Gesturing to the boar that as if on queue let out a juicy blast of air. Oh my! Yes, I would say we will begin getting some investment back on these animals very soon from that alone!
Liam, as if to make some minor point or to show he is still very much in a working mindset, moves to his cart and rummages through it a bit to come up with his sickle. He moved over to the nearest patch of underbrush and begins hacking away at the plantation, gathering up anything that looks healthy and leafy. He begins back plantation in armfuls and dumps them into the pens for the animals to munch on. There, there, little ones. Can't let you out just yet... We will get you grazing a little more tomorrow... may this fill your bellies so you may one day fill ours.

Thank you, Men. Thank you for everything. Believe me, I hate denying food to those that obviously need it, but I am happy to see experienced minds that see what I am trying to do here will be better in the long run. Perhaps the good Brother and I can begin a letter sending campaign to garner some support and donations from the mainland to have more relief sent. Surely there are churches and organizations we can contact of the plight here... And I can begin sending word to notable investors I know that might be willing to loan a few platinum here and there for something reasonable in return down the road. I have a pair of sisters and a brother in their respective orders that would surely be able to send some help of some kind. There certainly is no harm in trying.OGRE MAGE wrote:8 people remain behind, all of them farmer types who aren't strangers to hard work and long hours. Their leader speaks up. Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
The farmers nod in understanding. They know what it is like to go hungry now, and if they can help alleviate that problem permanently, they seem willing to do what it takes.
The second farmer just laughs at Liam's comments about the pig. "Normally, I'd say that were true. But the soil here is tainted er something. We cant get anything to grow worth a shit in this dry sandy dirt, and we fertilized plenty when we had animals here. I think its the salt from the sea, but I cant get anyone else here to listen to me about it."
"Oh, and don't feed them animals any of the ferns with the little red buds on them. I don't know what the heck that shit is, but it aint fit to eat fer neither man nor beast!"

Liam nods in thought. I see... salt in the soil... That makes sense... Is there a way to test it I wonder. Hmm... has there been any attempts to bring in dirt from further inland? Perhaps we can make raised beds and pile in the better more fertile soil from somewhere else and give the plants a chance to get a bit more hardy before the tap roots get too deep... give them a better chance. Liam looks over at the tide with a wide eyed look. If there is salt in the soil here... that would also suggest that this area flood over from the sea on occasion... Tell me, gentlemen, what is the weather like around here year round? Any seasons to speak of? Are there ever any large storms that blow in the tide over this area? If we get waves of salt water, it would only make sense that the soil would be salted to some degree... and if there are hurricanes and the like... we have even bigger problems... He thinks a moment and looks to them again. I'm not sure about testing dirt... but I do have a cartographers kit that had some measuring instruments. Maybe we could put together a team at some point and do some mapping and measuring, find where the high points are and try the soil there. But pardon me, I am getting ahead of myself...

Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
The talkative farmer continues.
"I heard something yesterday about some nature priest with an idea to create some self watering planting beds. But, much like everyone else who comes here, he has disappeared into the jungle and hasn't been seen since."
The human thinks long and hard when asked about the weather on the island.
"You know what.....now that I think about it a little, the weather is almost always the same here. Hot, humid, and buggy. We do get the occasional rainstorm, which keeps everything green and lush, and keeps the insects alive and breeding, but there hasn't been any serious storms to speak of since I have been here, going on 2 months now. We can see bad storms on the horizon sometimes, but they always seem to pass right by our little island here with little or no effect."
"I suppose it must storm here at times though, and that might be why the flooded soil near the sea is not great for farming. If you have ways of making our fields better so we aren't wasting out time out there, we would all be glad to listen to them."
When asked about the ferns, the man answers as best he can.
"I don't think they have any poison in them, more like a disease or something. Go ahead and pinch one of the little buds, if you like the smell of cow shit. The little things have some black funk in them that will make you sick as a dog for a day or two if you eat them. Does the same thing to the animals too."

Nods at the warning of the ferns. I wish we had an herbalist... Maybe they could tell us more about this and other plants on the island or at least know how to study them to unlock their potentials if any... Character ideas people!!! He shakes his head, realizing he is thinking out loud about things he cannot help yet.
Back to the farming problems. What, if anything, has been successful? Is there anything that seems more able than anything else to grow? I am sorry if I am asking frustrating questions, but I am ignorant to this, and I hope by sending some letters to smarter people than myself and maybe by conversing with the good men like yourselves here, I might be able to better understand. And irrigation system does sound like a good idea is dryness is an issue. If we can channel more fresh water here, then it might wash away some if not all the excess salt in the soil as well... What is your water source? Has anyone thought of making a system of ditches from it to your fields?

Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
As Liam finishes, a rather large, proud looking yet haggard middle aged woman struts up to the remaining group. She coughs out loud once the water situation is mentioned. Every bystander there stands silent and lets her speak her peace.
"I am in charge of the water here, so if you have something to say about how we do things, say it to me! My name is Marge!"
"There has been discussion about constructing an......aqueduct, I think it was called. But the one in charge of that idea isn't here at the moment. He is a wonderful and most helpful young woodsman named Waesfaren Rhey. I think he is out right now trying to procure something to eat for us, but never mind all that....."
"I see that you have created quite a stir in our little hamlet here. So tell me sir, who are you, and what brings you to Beachtown? I hope there is no hidden agenda involved within all of this generosity of yours."

Smiles warmly, making note of who everyone seems to react to this woman with respect and noticing how she is obviously used to being heard. He steps forward and takes her hand in his. No, no problems, Lady. Just a newcomer who would rather ask questions that seem foolish rather than do something foolish instead. If you are in charge of water I should like to know when I may help and carry my share, and of course some extra to help with my animals here. I don't expect anyone else to do that work as they are my own responsibility. I cannot ask for such things. I would like to meet this Mr. Rey, if any of you see him before I do... but tell me about yourself, Lady Waterbearer. What do you do for these fine people? How may Liam Meadstaff be of service?

Certain that she was going to receive nothing but grief and orders from this obviously well-to-do man that appears to be taking over her town, Marge feels a bit embarrassed by his reply, a trait that she is clearly not familiar with.
"Not afraid to ask foolish questions, eh? I like that in a man. I can introduce you to Wes if you like, the next time I see him around. He is a priest of nature, you see. And I think he prefers to wander out in the wild, but he is a good person and has helped with the water many times already, either going along to gather it, or magically creating it when he doesn't think anyone is looking."
But if you want a tour of the trail to the river, THAT I can arrange for you right away. Why don't you show up over there tomorrow morning at first light." She points to the side of the Hi-Lo building where the huge community water casks are kept. "Bring that mule of yours as well. He should be able to carry enough water to fill our reserves AND still have enough left over for all of these wonderful animals you've brought."
She looks around at the others still hanging around, trying to sound important.
"As far as what I do around here, you will learn that first hand at first light, IF you actually show up, Mister Meadstaff."

Smiles to Marge and nods. Deightful all around! I will make sure to have Jack and his cart ready to go. We will make a good work of it. Who knows, if we can make a couple trips, maybe we can douse the fields as well. What say you to that Gentlemen, Lady Marge? I am not afraid of a little work. I would think there will be plenty of good men willing to watch over the animals while I
am gone. Maybe one or two of the normal water bearers would be freed to stay here as well? I leave that sort of decision to you, or course, Lady. I have to say, I am excited about this whole prospect. Something very direct and tangible that we can do to better things here right away every day. That is how it is done.

Marge smiles at the mans words, though her eyes tell a different tale. Eventually she responds half heartedly.
"If I had a gold coin for every time someone came here and told me they wanted to help, only to rush off without a single blister, I could retire happy."
"No offense meant to you sir, but I will believe it when I see your smiling face in the morning."

Marge plays along, not sure what to make of this silver tongued newcomer.
"Well Liam, flattery will get you.......... almost anything."
She blows him a fake kiss as she turns her ample backside to him and waddles away.
Raythan just chuckles at the whole scene.
"You certainly know how to leave a lasting impression, my friend. You will be the mayor of Beachtown before you know it, I fear."
The half-elf motions for Liam to step away from the others for a private chat. "I didn't like the way the Constable talked about the two youngsters you plan on having watch the animals tonight. I think I better get off to bed soon so I can relieve you half way through the night. I don't intend to put in all of this work and effort, just to have the animals go missing mysteriously one at a time."
He starts heading back to his cabin. "Wake me up if you run into any trouble out here. See you in a few hours, then."

I don't intend to put in all of this work and effort, just to have the animals go missing mysteriously one at a time."
He starts heading back to his cabin. "Wake me up if you run into any trouble out here. See you in a few hours, then."

Smiles after Marge and turns to listen to Raythen. I agree. I am hoping some of these gentlemen will join us like they said and act as a deterrent to any foolishness. Good night friend. Sleep well.
Liam turns to the assembled men before they leave. I will be staying up for a first watch over the animals tonight before or brother Reythan takes over later. Any of you, or anyone you feel trustworthy and up for the task who can help is more than welcome. There are a pair of youths who already coming later... he describes them briefly. Perhaps we can work put an agreeable schedule for everyone.

Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
The two farmers that were working the hardest on the pens approach Liam alone before he retires inside.
"I wouldn't let them 2 Johnson boys cover a watch alone, Mr. Meadstaff. They were here from the beginning, and their Pa died here shortly after we arrived. I don't think they had the best intentions of the community in mind when they told you they were willing to help."
"We can stick around tonight to help out, maybe split some time between us?"

Nods taking all this in. sounds good to me. I think when these young men realize they are not alone and are put to work it can set a good example for them and others.
Work cultivates honesty. It sounds to me they have had a hard time of it, and little oppertunity. A little responsibility and payoff might be what they need. Tell me, good sirs, what kind of trouble have they been in? Who looks after them? What do they do when they are not up to shenanigans?
is the constible and Jumbo still around?

Re: It's Good To Bee Liam
Freeday, The 5th of Goodmonth
Getting Situated
Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Sweaty
With the majority of the crowd now dispersed, only the pair of farmers remain outside talking with the beekeeper.
“Whoa, whoa! Slow down there mister. Don’t go jumping to conclusions now! We didn’t say they was troublemakers! Just hungry is all! Desperately hungry! And even though we all is, I think some might be more willing to break the rules over it, if ya catch my meaning.”
“And don’t go believing everything ya hear from that pointy eared Constable either! He’s been here what? Three days? If you really want to know what’s going on here, ask someone who’s been around a little longer!”
As the men are talking, Liam notices some action near the loggers trail the leads north into the jungle. A group of 5 men appear to be returning from a hunt, looking thirsty and heading for the tavern in the tree, no doubt. They all suddenly jerk their heads around behind them as if the can see something coming at them from down the trail. Liam gets a bit more concerned when he sees the men preparing for battle.

Chuckles. Please, don't misunderstand me either. I was a bit of a rake at that age, too until elders... which I hate to say is beginning to be folks our age... busied my hands with good work and duties. It is how I came into this line of... occupation if you will.
Perhaps I can pay the deeds forward that was granted to me by older, more cool heads when I needed it most.
He is then interrupted by the large at the sight of the giant chicken and looks rather surprised. I see the mention of megafauna was not exaggerated either... I will need to have a talk with Reythan about his talent for understatement. He moves calmly over to his backpack and unclasps his crossbow, steady hands load a bolt and he takes a knee, keeping a keen and guarded eye on things. I hope it doesn't come this way, I feel rather unprepared for this. My responsibility is to the safety of these animals and anyone nearby, but I'm not about to go charging an animal I know nothing about. Have you gentlemen come across such a thing before? He holds up his handaxe for one of the farmers to arm themselves with in case the giant chicken monster comes their way and indicates the Sickle to another man, the sledgehammer to the third.
Nope! Not taking the bate! Not my level!!! LOL!
