Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
It is a poor choice with an encounter going against us. I think the overwhelming numbers and paralysing touch makes it an easy but not nice choice.
Foxy O'Hare
Successfully extricating ourselves from further melee, Foxy salutes the fallen Sephanne with her blade and spurs the horses further down the cobbled road. "We cannot risk charging in to save the horse even without endangering ourselves foolishly. Let us put good distance behind us and evaluate our plans "
Group morale may be at a low so Foxy will not regale the troopers for their lack of spotting the ambush ( at least not yet), and praise them instead for 'courage under fire'.
After riding half an hour we should stop to bind wounds then ride again another hours worth down the cobbles. Stopping when we see signs of habitation or ruins.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Foxy, Renvell, and Tocen escape the ghouls thanks to the unwilling sacrifice of their companion Sephanne and her mount who distracted them as food. After 30 minutes on the road, the group pauses to compose themselves, check Tocen's wounds, and have a moment of silence for their lost friend.
Foxy then rides on another hour, the road winding steadily southwest through the undulating foothills. The steep and forboding mountains rise directly before you about 20 miles away, the road heading straight towards them for the few miles you can see ahead of you. You don't see any sign of ruins or habitations ahead, just rolling foothills with patches of woods here and there, the mountain dominating the horizon.
Foxy is considering calling a halt after another hour's march when there is another outcry from Tocen, who is riding at the rear. While Foxy and Renvell skirted it, it appears that Tocen stumbled straight into a covered pit-trap in the roadway, cleverly disguised under a puddle. He and his horse tumble in, the horse screaming in agony, its leg seriously injured. Tocen, meanwhile, has fallen from the saddle and dashed his skull against the rocks in his fall - he is unconscious and bleeding at the pit bottom.
Before Foxy and Renvell can get their bearings, there is a shrill warcry! Ten scrawny kobolds leap out of their blinds, twirling slings and pelting the two of you with rocks. One grazes Foxy's head (-1) while two smack hard into Renvell's leatherclad body. (-2, -2)
Actions!
You are having some REALLY bad luck with these rolls...

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Adding: You have a free healing potion from the Christmas Gamewide Award. (I don't think you bought any additional befoe leaving town, did you?) Since you said you were "bandaging" (which is just for color), I will allow your to backdate your action to give Tocen the healing potion. In that case, he survives the fall (but is still in the pit).
Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
I have a healing potion gifted me from Clay in my inventory. From the end of the Goblin hall expedition. If I have a Christmas one then I would give that to the troops to use.
Lance charge attack [1d20] = 9 medium lance [2d6] = 11
Renvell to hit [1d20] = 14 damage [2d6] = 6
Tosun to hit shortbow [1d20] = 3 damage [1d6] = 2
This is just going to get messy!
Foxy and Renvell charge horse and lance to skewer nearby opponents while Tocen feebly fires his bow over the pit edge (probably standing on his horse to see).
The scouting mission is proving difficult to survive.

Don't forget to post your Thac0!
Foxy's skill overcomes the chaos of battle - she skewers a kobold with her charge so violently that it is run fully through and carried spraying blood as the turns her horse (-11). Renvell's shot fells another of the small creatures, punching deep into its chest (-6). Tocen fires blindly from the pit, demonstrating his continued threat.
Seeing thus that the party are not easy marks, the kobolds turn and flee back into the brush. Living to mount another ambush seems the more valiant pursuit.
(Parting shots, or do you let them go? Ideas for getting Tocen's horse out of the pit?)
initiative: Us [1d6] = 6 them [1d6] = 2
kobold morale [2d6] = 7

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Renvell and Tocun firing parting shots at the fleeing kobolds, to no avail, the arrows whizzing over dog-eared heads.
How deep is the pit, standard 10'ft deep? can either dig steps into one side or tie a rope and haul the horse out. Or the old donkey down a well trick ... you throw lots of mud and stones down, the donkey just stands on the layer until it is high enough to jump out.
All seem too time consuming except the rope attempt. We have a 50'ft rope and with the warhorse effort should be able to manipulate the horse enough to get out. Maybe first we need to check on the health of both Tocun and the horse leaving, Renvell to take a defensive position and cover us with his bow. If necessary I will use the last remaining potion to heal the horse but if it has more than half hp remaining use it on the most injured trooper.
I forgot to add any bonuses for the 'good rest and fayre' in Gaul if that might have backdated any better saves or shots.
Once we get the horse free of the pit I would suggest we trek off road to a copse of trees out of sight of this encounter and rest up for the night. It has been some first day!

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Giving the potion to the horse helps repair its legs - given that, the ropes, and digging one side of the pit into somewhat of a ramp, you get the horse out of the pit before sunset. Being sorely pressed by your day, your trio finds a concealed copse and camps for the night. You wake rested in the morning, ready for a new day's decisions.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
I like the words, "everything is easy". By my own map plotting I place us approx at the junction of the NW and SW lines of the third hex above Guhra's red hex. The 20 miles to the SW hills about correct. So ...
Foxy O'Hare
We rise with the dawn. Foxy is concerned at how easy it is to ambush us. We have to be more diligent and will swap point duty every hour to lessen watch fatigue.
Intrigued to know where the cobbled road leads south. Monoc's ruins? My idea though is to circle Zhint city so for next hours we trek due west, off road over the hills. Checking for towers, ruins, smoke signals, signs of other folk or horses passing. Stop at midday.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
I'll help a smidge... I think you're one hex further west than you think. You're north of the goblin king's hall, not north of Guhra's tower. You also know that you already passed the City of Zhint - it was on your right shoulder (north) as you rode before you hit the ghouls and found the road. It is back northeast of you.
Does that change anything for you? Riding due-west cross-country for six hours is fine. Or, if you follow the road [southwest] you get a x1.5 modifier for distance/speed. Visible distance is typically a half-hex at most, so you'll find different things soon enough on either road.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
I would go down the road further but have little defence against mage types and I don't want to risk encountering a roaming Scatha. So unless an encounter dictates us going SW I will continue on the circular route, (West for a day then turn North and then back East around the ruined city).
Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Eschewing the road, Foxy's patrol heads off due west, riding six hours until noon. The high grass of the plains is pleasant to ride through and the patrol keeps good time, though the grass conceals any lower-profile threats. You see the thin ribbon of road head off to the southwest, then turn due west - your own course parallels it and you can see it popping in and out of view on the horizon a few miles due south of your own course. The foothills encroach on the other side of the road - the road takes advantage of the rolling plains by skirting them.
You see no high-profile landmarks in the rolling grasslands. No towers, building frames, or ruins in the land you're covering. Thankfully, you also see no large predators or ambushes, either. There are occasional copses of trees, bramble patches, and other natural features, but nothing in particular arouses your curiosity.
You stop at noon as planned, thus far unmolested. The road to your south continues on to the far horizon, still continuing westward beyond the few miles you can see.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Interesting, Well after an hour's rest for the horses, checking horseshoes and harnesses and getting the troops to polish their helms, (must keep some semblance of order), Foxy takes the point and we will ride parallel to the road for another three hours. My feeling is that skirting the road, even though travelling a slower pace, will enable us to monitor the road users (if any) before we get seen ourselves. On the grasslands, what have we seen in terms of wildlife? I am thinking scattered deer, maybe a fox or wolf, (giraffe?). She also wants to be wary of thick forest or marshy areas, bogs and rocky crags as they could be decent lairs for predators or feral humanoid groups. If we come across a good sheltered spot early it might do well to make effort and camp for the sake of recovering wounds.
Stop to investigate strange sights or sounds, signals. The road obviously leads somewhere significant, to and from Zhintville.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
You continue another six miles. The plains give way to foothills, the road winding along the straightest course but you riding up and down as the terrain undulates. You pause and consider the terrain ahead -- the steep rocky slope of the jagged mountains shoulder just far northward compared to further west. You are now nearing its northernmost intrusion and will pass near in about two miles ahead. The road bends northward slightly, closer to your path, as it skirts the higher and rougher mountain terrain to stay in the rolling foothills. Meanwhile the foothills and grasslands ahead of you begin to take a sickly yellow color where they stretch northward away from the mountain, a decided indicator that something is deeply unhealthy in the lands ahead. The road continues through them.
At noon in the summer there's scant wildlife, but Foxy has seen animal signs of deer, wolves, bear, rabbits, foxes, boar... similar to that closer to Gaul.

Foxy O'Hare
a Gwanwen priest or one of the Beithists' might understand a bit more regarding the landscape changes. The sickliness reminds me of drought conditions or something worse like a pestilence in the soil.
With that in mind I think we should cover the two miles in double quick time. We shall aim to cross the road about a mile short of the tip of the mountain. Foxy would think that a large free standing boulder or high ledge on that tip would give a good vantage point to anything watching the road and be able to view the wider hills on each side of the spur. When we get to the road we need to be careful to cross it and then I would think about dismounting and leading the horses up the rocky slopes if she can get to a ridge top. It might take some scouting to be safe though and she doesn't want to be scrabbling about too much in plate-mail.
If there was a thick copse or rocky overhang short of exploring the mountain tip then we stop there before proceeding further.

sorry I didn't quite get that picture. Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Foxy changes course to south-southwest, heading straight towards the mountain's jutting foot. It takes an hour for the three riders to reach it and begin up the elevation, and it is another hour picking through steeper mountain crags and sparser, rougher footing before they arrive at a respectable ridgeline. The long rocky outcropping is about 75 feet deep, a steeper slope angling upward behind to the left and south, a sharp precipice dropping off on the north edge. Indeed, you can see quite far across the low hills and rolling plains from here.
To the northeast and east you confirm that your experience seems typical - scrubland without large features or significant marks of past or current civilization. It is a perfect place for smaller creatures to make their homes and you suspect your experience with the kobolds might be typical. Far off in that direction, the massive City of Zhint is a tiny mark on the horizon. To the north and northwest, the land is progressively blighted - brown dominates rather than green, with swaths of bare red and gray earth. From the elevated vantage, however, you can see more of a pattern than on the ground - the blight emanates outward from some point about 15-20 miles north-northwest.
As you sit astride your horses at the eastern end of the long ridge ledge, you hear the crunching footsteps of others at the far end, about 140 yards away. Four hill giants come around the bend there, ambling along. They stop and regard you with disinterest, not seeming to register your small forms as a threat.

Foxy O'Hare
No, we are not much of threat to four of them. Glad they are not hungry for horse meat as well. Foxy had heard reports that some hill giants lived close to the kobold tower so this group may be another clan if clan is the correct word. How are they dressed the reports said the others were quite spartan, torn clothes, dishevelled. Trying to note stuff like twinkling gemstone necklaces, neat dreadlocks, sewn furs, proper weapons instead of big chipped clubs.
Foxy indicates to the Renvell and Tocun to stay calm. A barrage of rocks could easily swat us off the outcropping, so no sudden moves or perceived threats.
Foxy will ride a short way and hail them. She has learned some southern hill giantish as the 'De Coulthard' family stagecoach and wagons were pulled through tribal mountain lands, much like towing barges through a series of uphill locks.
"Hail Rockbrothers."she signals to them trying to wave cheerfully. "I am Foxy Carrot-hair, scout for the lords of the northern city. These two are my friends also. Can you aid my viewing and tell my of these lands we survey?"
Foxy wants to asks about the blighted lands and the central core. Do they travel that far, is the water and grass good for horses. She will tell them that a red dragon flies from a cave in the old dwarf mines to the east. And share that some giants farm northwards. If they come close to inspect us she can point out that ghouls and doggy-humanoids raked the horses and laid traps on the roads.
She will ask about their travels, where they come from and go and what do they hunt. (hopefully not horses or people! maybe they are vegetarians!)
Foxy retainer roll [2d6] = 9 use that for preliminary discussions, I wasn't thinking of recruiting any until I know more of the area we travel, but I did have offering one in mind.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
The Hill Giants look clean and kempt, but 'Stone Age' in their development. Leathers and furs, tanned and stitched. Stone knives and axes, or heavy clubs. The dreadlocks look rather handsome.
Foxy closes the gap and calls out to them. They are surprised to hear their own tongue. They converse amongst themselves, not bothering to answer her queries directly. They do, however, express some interest and sympathy for their wounds.
They're Indifferent, you need to get them Friendly before you try to recruit. You also need to intrigue them more or butter them up to try another CHA role for answers.

Foxy O'Hare
okay, so at least no retort of rocks or cabbages being thrown.
Foxy will take off her helm (hoping to display a less military, more friendly person) and wave to them saying that we can share some of our food with them. She calls to Renvell and Tocun to prepare a small fire and guessing that hungry giants will eat a days rations each in one meal, (deduct -4 days of food). Foxy will light the mountain spur-top camp fire with her blazing sword, hoping that will prick some interest.
"I took this from the goblin warg-king who lived in the deserted dwarven silver mine."she says admiringly, "silver though is not the only precious ore there for the dragon that dwells inside melted the huge golden temple doors with his fiery breath into a rippling stream. I dipped my shield into it and as an offering tied it around the dragons neck."
She hopes that the exaggerated tales of gold, silver, dragons and firebrand swords will have a better response than her previous tavern tales. If the four giants sit and converse around the campfire, Foxy will ask, (translating for the others) about the area and also if they have any loams and poultices which might aid the injured recover.

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Well done!
You slowly ingratiate yourself, showing inoffensiveness, demonstrating a remarkable ability to light fires, cooking and sharing food, and telling tales of bravado. Eventually you find success -- the Giants crouch around your fire, adding some wood to make it more to their liking (if a bit of a bonfire, to you), licking their fingers after enjoying the snacks you shared. You find their are quite personable as they become more friendly.
You ask about the surrounding lands again. They tell you that they have their homes not too far (but you suspect you judge distance differently) and that the tiny kobolds are a constant nuisance you both dislike. They tell you the kobolds nest in caverns, and they don't follow Nature -- their foul worship is perverse and making things sick near their mountain. The giant Shaman does not approve.
The kobolds and goblins challenge each other down in the wastelands. Hunting both is good sport. Kobolds are scrawny, but goblins is good roasted if you wash it well enough.
The road is used by humans with horses and big dogs. Sometimes wagons. Not like you; they like you but not them. They don't know much about the blight as they don't like to go down into the open fields. The Shaman warns that the monsters there come from the afterlife to steal the souls of those who venture where they shouldn't.
A female giant, the one who keeps speaking of the shaman and is apparently a disciple, takes an interest in Tocen and Renvell. She himself a shrill tone while meditating over them. Both of their wounds heal.

Eventually, the sun dips to the mountains above, though it's Ray's still shine out in the fields below. They say they need to get back to their home. You can ask to join them (roll 3d6 and 4d6), camp here, or descend to the hills below (arriving at full-dark).

Re: Expedition: Foxy Rides Northwest - 22 July 2021
Foxy O'Hare
Foxy makes sure that the troops, Renvell and Tocun, respond in kindness to the usually gruff giants, especially so after receiving healing virtue. Foxy will share that she knows of a cleric of nature who walks the earth like a 'shaman in badger form' and that if they travel to the watchtower they may find refuge and help in times of need. Did the shaman giantess use any kind of holy symbol? Did she give a name at all?
She asks specifically about the Red Robe travellers and the frequency of their passing. Can the giants confirm if the RR live in any ruins which are located close to the centre of this blight? Or is it the kobolds and their temple which is in the centre of this aura. Is it spreading each season or a one time cataclysmic effect which taints the land.
Foxy also thinks that the bonfire on the spur may be seen from a long distance away in the undulating plains. So she says that if they come to some danger and need aid then to build a bonfire at the very tip and she will answer their call if she is able. It might be that such beacons become focus points for racial alliances in the future. As for camping, their home might be the opposite way we intend to travel. She asks for directions or landmarks anyway to the place so that when she returns to this area she may pay her respects. (with a view to recruiting future giant help in securing the borders from dangers).
With their skilled hands could they build a rock igloo for us to stay in tonight? Foxy friendly status vs charisma roll [2d6] = 7 she asks, smiling sweetly.
She says that she will scout the 'blighted' lands for a day if the grass and water is free of pestilences and then turn northwards. In another moon she may come back this way.
