Yes, in this case a flashback is OK. This ninja game is more complicated than most games. The PCs would have training at conducting ops and working together that the players don't.

But, is Servant one of Minoru's hensu-jutsu guises? We can retcon and let him choose that one if he wants.

Just Wandering Priest, Traveling Entertainer, Merchant.

Would the merchant role work? Not exactly a servant, but a junior member of the family who might be sent on errands?

I don't think it would work. Part of hensu-jutsu is the diguise, and a merchant's clothing would likely be too good for a servant with Kaida social status. You could try it, but the NPCs would probably get Detection of Hidden Thing (Wit STs).

Oh, never mind. I forgot Kaida is in Buke disguise. Minoru doesn't have an appropriate disguise to fetch her unless it would be at all credible for her family to send a wandering priest to fetch her. But no, they would either send a servant, or a low ranking bushi I suspect.

Maybe one of the others has a more appropriate disguise.

I think the offer is that you could change your disguises - did you like the Travelling Entertainer option, or was it a default? You could change it to servant.

I guess maybe changing to servant would be useful against Kaida's buke disguise. OK, let me change on my character sheet.

Re: Kaida and Minoru

Kaida dines with the merchant's wife, her shy teen-age daughter, and her impudent early adolescence son at a long, low table in the mansion's great front reception and dining room. The seat cushions they're seated on the pristine tatami mat frames are silk, and dyed to a color that is neither spring maple leaf green nor dove gray, but some hue in between. The service is fine ceramic, each bowl and shallow dish an individual work of fine craftmanship and design. The chopsticks are of dark cherry wood, inlaid with symmetrical sunflower blossoms of mother-of-pearl. In the style of the Heian-Kyo capital? Or the great, ancient culture of China, across the sea? It's something she'll have to ask about back at The Village. To improve her daughter of a buke hensu-jutsu skill. Now, she's young, so some ignorance of things can probably be forgiven.

Kaida notes that, despite the lavishness of the furnishings and the spectacular artworks adorning the room, and the vastness of the great hall... the lighting at the dinner is rather dim. Only four candle lanterns, brought rather close to this part of long dining table light the large reception chamber. The four walls of the chamber can are in dim, flickering light, and can hardly be. It seems that the mistress of the house has rather good taste in the aesthetics of things. But the single-minded money-consciousness of the merchant caste might be hard to overcome.

Sanae, the younger servant woman serves food brought from the northeast, eyes averted. The area the woman had pointed to and indicated as the kitchen, laundry, and servants' quarters. The food is good, and cooked in the Kofu City style. Plenty of soy sauce, some sake in the broth, and grated and sauteed onions in it for flavor and thickening. The woman makes small talk, about the weather, the opening of spring, the merchant’s landscaping project. And lightly, the ongoing war between the Taira and Minamoto groups of samurai clans. Here, the boy chimes in. “Father-san says that the Takeda and the other Minamoto clans could win, because they’re real bushi compared to the Taira samurai around the capital. Father-san calls them “tea, incense and garments bushi.” But he also says that the Taira will win, because of two things. The Minamoto clans’ leader is only good at losing battles. And the Taira have more money. And having more money always wins, even in war.”

The woman casts an uneasy glance at the young woman of the Minamoto-allied Miura samurai clan and hurriedly says, “Ichiro-kun, Father-san would never say such a thing. You must have heard it somewhere else. Perhaps from those ronin guards, or the gardeners. Neh, Kaori-chan?” The daughter nods, and simply says, “Ichiro-kun lies all the time. You can’t trust anything he says.” The mother quickly changes the subject to the New Year’s holiday*, which is coming in just a few days. “Kofu is usually quiet during the days around New Year’s Day. The peasants working in the city return to their home villages for the holiday. But last year many of them didn’t, because of the war. They say that with the human bushi occupied with fighting each other, the creatures and o-bake** of the mountains and swamps have grown more bold, and the roads aren’t safe. Well then, we’ll let Miura-san have a bath and get some rest in her room.”

The impudent boy says, “She won’t get any rest. There’s no privacy in that room. There’s always a visitor after midnight. A dead one.” The hostess cuts a sharp at the boy, silently commanding him to be silent. The girl’s face remains expressionless. But in it's immobility, it doesn't not deny the truth of the boy's statement.

*New Year’s in Nippon is the first day of spring, around April 1.

Kaida-in-disguise handles the boy's comments and mother's retractions with appropriate grace, but the Buke daughter shows the appropriate mix of titilation and concern on her face at the mention of the ghost, perhaps in jest. Surely they would not put the Buke daughter in harm's way...

Alone in the room, Kaida meditates until midnight, when she enchants herself with the true sight to reveal the ghost, should it arrive. She also remains wary, should anyone (particularly a curious child) be spying at a paper wall.

Kaida wonders what the other members of the nakama are doing. It's obvious that either Fuma or Jinsei was seen on the north end of the eastern wall; the servant in the yard made that clear. Would they attempt an entry into the house later tonight? Or call the action off for the day? Could they even be in the house at this moment?

She looks around the room with her magical vision, but sees nothing out of the ordinary.

Need a DoHTs (Wit) ST. Does Kaida sleep, or does she stay up all night watching? If she stays up, she risks having impaired Attributes tomorrow. A Strength ST would be needed.

Need Minoru's action.

Re: Kaida and Minoru

Kaida sleeps lightly. She's separated from the nakama, and she doesn't know where they are or what they're doing. It's hard to go into a deep sleep when there are so many unknowns, and she may need to act and make quick, clear-headed decisions at any minute.

She has a strange dream. She herself is not even in it. It's as if she's looking at a painting-- but the figures are moving, there is sound, and there are even. She sees a city with many beautiful temples, shrines, and mansions. I can only be Heian Kyo, the capital. She sees a young woman in a nice kimono in richly furnished room, but she knows that she is a servant of the house.
Image
It is nighttime. The woman goes out of the house, watching carefully to stay unobserves. She is now on a bench under a roof in a garden. A young samurai with dai-sho and a kind, gentle face comes. Kagetora. Her lover, the man she loves with all of her heart. She stands. He holds her two hands as they kiss. The young man says sadly, I know that they will take you away. Perhaps you will return when Heian Kyo is cool again in the autumn. He doesn't say it, but Kaida knows they both feel that they will never see each other again. The young woman is alone again on the bench. She cries.

The young woman is now in a different house. Kaida knows that it's this house in provincial Kofu, but in a room that Kaida hasn't seen before. The woman lies on a futon, sleepinbg.
But like Kaida, mentally half awake, unable to fully let down her guard and fully sleep. Quiet male footsteps are heard, a shoji is quietly slid open, and middle-aged man the robes of a noble kuge enters the room. Incongruously, he wear a tall eboshi cap, as if going to court.
Image
Kaida knows that the man is the master of this house, and that he misses his mistresses and courtiers in the capital. And that the servant girl dreads and detests his nightly visits.

The young woman is bring a tray of delicacies to the kuge and the lady of the house.
Image
The lady incongruously wears the seven-layers kimono of the kuge lady, as if she is entertaining guests. Kaida knows she is always harsh to the young woman, sometimes to the point of cruel torment. And that she is usually dull and depressed, hardly moving around the great halls of the house. Her only relief from her depressed ennui seems to come from inflicting sadistic cruelty on the young woman. The wife knows all about the master's nightly visits. But at this moment, the hateful mistress is lively and cheerful. As the young woman places the dishes before her and the kuge, she says, Dear, I have a letter, and news. Tragically, Tairo no Kagetora of Heian Kyo has tragically been killed in a battle with the Minamoto. By a stray arrow, without even having a chance to draw his katana and face an enemy. He had only married the beautiful samurai lady Miura no Asae two months before. It is said that she is heartbroken, wretched despair at the loss of the husband who loved her so. But, it is also said that she has the comfort of knowing that she is with Kagetora's child. The woman lifts her eyes to the young woman's, a smile on her lips.

Then, her face above the seven-layered kimono has transformed.
Image
She slowly, slowly, incredibly slowly rises to her feet. She raises the outer kimono over her head, changing the number from seven, the number of Heaven's good fortune, to six. The number for Nothingness.
Image
She says in the hissing voice of a human-demon-hag of Hell, You long to return to Heian Kyo, to see if Kagetora's grave is there. So you pray for his soul's repose, give your benediction, and say your farewell. It is there. They retrieved the body and brined it. But not the head. That, the Minamoto took for their own. Foolish servant girl, you should know that you will never return to Heian Kyo!. We are Taira, in a Minamoto city. We will sell this hovel to the most greedy, crass, and ignorant country merchant we can find! And you with it! He and the merchant wife will be much pleased-- each for their own reasons-- to have a girl from the capital who formerly served the highest nobility. You are bound to here. Forever.

Beside a swift, river, the very one Kaida knows from below mountain slope of The Village, but broader and deeper here in Kofu, the young woman kneels. She takes a sharp fillet knife from the hanging rectangle of her kimono's sleeve. It's an isolated spot in provincial city. The sound of human traffic and voices can be faintly senses in the distance. But there is no one else around.

Kaida enters the dream. First-hand, as herself. She has gone far away, to a city she used to live in and she knows well. She's at a party of many sympathetic, easy-going, and very intelligent and kind people. Two young men, friends of each other, are taken with her. Her One brushes his hand on the back of her hand, and she knows that it is deep friendship, deeper than romance. True friendship and love, with everlasting romance. Then, Kagetora-sama appears at the party. He's only visiting this town for a few days break, then he has back to his work. All of the girls take notice and fawn over him, eager to push forward and get to know him. He can't help but notice. It's been a long time, years and years, since he and Kaida have been separated. And been forced to do best and move along....

Kaida wakes, and slowly realizes that she's coming from a dream. She's in a guest bedroom in the merchant Tanaka Jiro's mansion in Kofu. All is dark and quiet. She overslept though. It's been hours since she's seen the nakama, even Minoru, who was just outside the wall when she knocked at the gate. Fuma and Jinsei, detected and alerted on by the young man servant, followed by the loud yard dog. A place like this must have some bladed guards. How many? Probably just the right amount for....

She suddenly feels a weird sensation. As if she's in the room, the kakuriyo world of magical traversing, and back in the dream again. She smells the essence of temple incense smoke before she hears the voice. I'm so sorry, shinobi-sama. I'm sorry, I don't know your true name and how to truly address you. Please help me. Please, please help me, I ask of you. Take me to Heian Kyo. If you will, I will help you however I can. I promise.

Kaida's eyes dwelling in the kakuricho perceive an image of a presence in the room. But it is so large, strong and full of will, she guesses that anyone of the nakama would have perceived it, had they been there.
Image
But now the image is gone. But not gone. Kaida again fades into an exhausted sleep, with dreams. "If you will take me to Heian Kyo, I'll find the grave site on my own. I will help you however I can. I promise."

Yes, from what he overheard, it sounds like things with Kaida are going well and I assume she suspects the mission was aborted for this evening.

That's for shugenja Kaida to investigate and find out. :) Maybe with the help of pious layman Minoru. Gakusho have some expertise on the subject of ghosts. But Minoru is not a full professional gakusho, and he's a first-level rookie as well.

Deferring an answer on the ghost's request until I better understand:
a) how we actually transport a ghost
b) if it is reasonable that we could actually travel to Heian Kyo, and
c) that we could reasonably get permission from the Clan to do so
...assuming positive responses on those, she would promise no more than to take her from the house and to consult the Clan on further action. (She addressed me as Shinobi-sama, so she knows the limitation)

...edit your add:
jemmus wrote: Fri Oct 27, 2023 4:23 pmThat's for shugenja Kaida to investigate and find out. :) Maybe with the help of pious layman Minoru.
Then it isn't a 'right now' problem. It is a 'get back to the other PCs and address this later' problem. :)

If the ghost is not accosting or preventing my action, I'm getting up and leaving as I said.

Kaida rises from the dreams, finding the sun not quite risen. She composes herself and greets the dawn, offering respects to her mother as the first rays touch her face.

She reassumes her disguise and demeanor, changing back into her laundered clothing and departing the small room. She hopes her quiet footfalls do not rouse others, besides the earliest servants. She thanks them politely for their hospitality and departs however she is able to without contradicting her disguise.

If she makes it onto the street, she meanders to make sure she has no tail following her, then finds a concealed moment to change her disguise back to the gakusho. She again confirms she is not followed before she goes to the shrine to meet her companions at the appointed hour.

Power score restored at dawn. She tries to leave quietly and with minimal fuss. If they fuss, or try to escort her to the office over her protests/assurances, hopefully the flashback allows Minoru to be outside in servant-disguise to join the scene.

Marullus wrote: Thu Nov 02, 2023 12:04 am Oh, okay. Yes, she needs to use hensu jutsu. If I can do countersurveillance to make sure that she's not followed and she can duck aside somewhere to switch her disguises, all the better. Best if the buke girl stops existing quickly.

So, just waiting to find out if Kaida leaves the house, how many hensu jutsu tests you need, etc.
Moved this from the Campaign Setting thread.
There are three intersections on either streets route to the shrine. Map: https://www.unseenservant.us/forum/view ... 68#p664968
So three hensu-jutsu rolls. The space between the roofed walls of two mansions is a good, pretty dark place for concealment and changing costumes.

Kaida rises early, the dream and the image of the lost servant girl seen through Dragon Eyes magic still in her head. She makes her way to great entrance hall and dining room. It's empty, but the smell of cooking rice is in the air. Outside to the east, it sounds like workmen are speaking to each other and preparing for some work. Sanae appears from the kitchen area to the northeast with a broom, ready to tackle the job of sweeping the polished hardwood floor of the large room. She bows to Kaida. Ohayo gozaimasu, o-kyaku-sama. Are you leaving without breakfast? Please wait a moment. She goes to the doorway of the kitchen and servants area. Atusuko-san! O-kyaku-sama is leaving. The older woman appears, wiping wet hands on an apron. She asks Kaida to stay for breakfast, and let the mistress bid her good-bye. But Kaida make excuses, politely refuses, thanks the women, and asks them to give the mistress her deepest gratitude for her hospital in this wonderful residence. She leaves the villa, and finds a discrete place between the walls of two mansions to change disguises.

Does she change back to a priest?
