Warlock approaches Azir in order to be picked up and carried to the rooftop.

The Factory Roof
5:36 PM Local Time – Sunday, December 6th, 1987

Wind Dragon: DEX 20, DEF 20, END 46/46, STUN 38/38
Eclipse: DEX 20, DEF 21/25, END 46/46, STUN 29/29
Azir: DEX 18, DEF 27, END 56/56, STUN 56/56
Warlock: DEX 18, DEF 22/24, END 40/40, STUN 40/40

The four heroes ascend to the factory roof with the night air crisp against their skin. Three ride the strength and agility of Azir, whose powerful legs carry them effortlessly upward, scaling the brick walls with ease. The fourth, Wind Dragon, rises with a the power of the wind.

They land softly atop the roof, each hero taking care to distribute their weight, toes brushing the surface with near-silent precision. The only sounds are the soft sigh of the wind and the distant creak of the ancient structure settling under its own weight. They pause, tense, scanning their surroundings, hoping their arrival has gone unnoticed in the night air.

Before them stretches a broad, aging rooftop, layered thick with autumn’s discarded leaves and nature’s creeping reclamation. Twigs, scraps of faded tar paper, and drifts of brittle debris shift and scatter under the faintest touch. Yet one spot stands in stark contrast: a rectangular area near the central roof entrance has been meticulously cleared.

In that barren patch gleams a sharp, modern antenna array, its polished metal surfaces reflecting the dim moonlight. The array bristles with equipment—narrow parabolic dishes, dense bundles of signal cables, a pair of reinforced transmission spires—its clean, technological precision completely at odds with the surrounding decay.

Three visible stairwell exits punctuate the rooftop, one at each end and the one in the middle adjacent to the antenna

Faint traces of boot prints, too recent to ignore, mark the cleared area. The antenna is no afterthought; it was installed carefully, with purpose.

Eclipse

Eclipse heads over to the antenna, trying to make as little noise as possible.

Stealth (8-): [_3d6]=(5+3+3)=11

Once there he examines the antenna, trying to determine more about what they might be used for.

(e.g. microwave line-of-sight, satellite, RF, etc.)

Warlock

The ride was quick and easy, with the sudden acceleration and deceleration a new experience to Warlock. Even though he was accustomed to flying through the air via his spells, jumping was quite a different beast. He cocked his head to the side a bit once his feet hit the roof grounds, settling into the feeling and looking around. Then he spotted the antenna arrays.

"... This is ... interesting...", he whispered.

There was far too much technology here for this to be related to DEMON in any particular way, or at least so he told himself. It was certainly possible that they would have taken on the skills and know-how of modern technological communications for their benefit, after all, it was just far too available and easy to acquire. Would they, though? Still, the whole thought sad oddly in Warlock's mind. That was not DEMON's usual M.O. Perhaps there was something new for him to learn here.

"This may not be DEMON", he quietly added.

He wondered how he could contribute in this situation, his expertise being more sorcerous than electronic, as he watched Azir and Eclipse do their thing. He was still concerned that any possible wards would give his location away, but a bit less now, seeing all the equipment on the roof. Clearly some sort of information was being exchanged here. This was not typical for an abandoned factory.

Not wanting to reveal his position to a broader audience, he refrained from casting any spells. Instead, he approached the central cluster of antennas and dishes with a cautious step, following Eclipse's lead.

Eclipse moves cautiously across the debris-strewn roof, the soft crunch of leaves beneath his boots giving way to a low groan as the aged structure flexes under his weight. He approaches the antenna or more precisely, the antenna array which is a sleek but rugged configuration that immediately strikes him as more than a typical rooftop setup. A closer look reveals an integration of closed-beam microwave relays alongside more standard radio and encrypted communication frequencies. The array hums faintly, dormant for now, but Eclipse knows better than to take it lightly. He halts, calculating line-of-sight vectors. If the microwave dish were to activate while someone stood in its path, the result would be more than a sunburn as deep tissue damage and electronic detection would be almost guaranteed. For now, he skirts the edge of its potential arc, mentally mapping its range.

Meanwhile, Azir reaches the central stairwell entrance, crouching low and keeping her silhouette below the roofline. She grips the locked door’s handle, testing its resistance. Her strength could easily snap it off — a quick twist, a sharp motion, and they’d be in. But the sound might carry.

Wind Dragon whispers from the shadows, replying to Warlock's earlier suspicion:
"I don’t have a lot of experience with DEMON, but I’d agree, this setup’s way too clean for the usual arcane chaos DEMON known for. More silicon than sulfur in this place."
He straightens slightly and calls over softly to Azir, "You want me to take a shot at that door? Might have a quieter touch."

Just then, the air shifts.

From deep within the factory below, a strange whooshing sound rises, not wind, but likely something moving fast. The sound bends upward in pitch like a rising siren, then cuts off with a sharp metallic slam. Silence returns, heavier now, almost expectant. The team exchanges glances, all too aware that something mechanical or worse just make the first move.

Azir

Azir shakes her head No to Wind Dragon for now and points to the next door over.

Azir focuses her attention, trying to locate where exactly the noise came from. Preparing herself for whatever is to come.

Eclipse

Eclipse realises that the element of surprise is most likely lost. He activates his force field and lifts himself a couple inches off of the roof, not trusting the strength of the structure.

Are the various antennas heavy enough to be used in his telekinetic attack where he throws metal stuff at people?

Warlock

The noise escalated and then ceased. It was a bit unsettling. Was that an automated action, a function of whatever was in the factory grounds itself? Or was it an indication of their discovery? Watching the reactions of his teammates, Warlock surmised they were likely as suspicious as he was, preparing for what may be an imminent attack.

Warlock took a few steps back and waited at attention for the events to unfold... assuming something had detected them.

OOC: Warlock will hold his phase to act if anything dangerous happens.

Eclipse

The glow from his body cast a warm yellow light over the rooftop. Realising his friends could be at risk if a fight broke out, Eclipse warns them of the danger of the microwave transmitters and the areas they should avoid.

Good catch, re-reading my post I was not clear with the location of the microware antenna. It does NOT cover anywhere that you can get to without flight. The path over the building is heading east at a height of about 2.5-3 hexes from the center of the building.

With the entire group now frozen in a state of heightened alert, every breath held, every muscle tensed, the sound from below hangs in the cold evening air like a challenge. A beat passes. Then another.

Thud.

It echoes, low and solid, unmistakably metal. Not an accidental noise. No rattle of pipes, no wind gust this time. Just the deliberate, forceful slam of perhaps a heavy door. The kind that’s meant to be closed with purpose.

The team collectively flinches, powers at the ready. But then ... nothing.

No footsteps. No voices. No hum of machinery winding up. Just the stillness of twilight and the rustle of leaves at their feet. Even the ever-present background hum of the city feels dampened, as if the factory itself has swallowed the surrounding noise.

The door below, if that's what it was, remains closed.

It feels wrong, like the world took a breath and then forgot to exhale.

There is a long pause, broken only by the creak of an old metal gutter shifting under temperature change. The group remains in place, senses straining. The wind picks up slightly, tugging at loose tarps and dry leaves. Nothing comes up the stairs. No alarms trigger. The antenna doesn’t light up.

Anti-climactic. Like a suspenseful chord that never resolves.

Warlock

"Hmmm. Maybe they haven't found us out yet. Let's go ahead and enter through one of these doors."

Warlock knows his lockpicking skills are not yet up to par with the team. He knows he'll have to work on a spell to make that happen, but the research will take some time, time he doesn't have at this very moment.

Azir

Whispering, "Warlock, do you have a way to quietly open the door or should we try your teleport to get inside? Otherwise I can open it, but it may give us away and we should be prepared for combat soon after we enter."
