Sets about the Recon tasks from a bird's-eye view

Marco: Recon 1 skills check [2d6+1]=6+1=7

and any advantage from a ground assault.

Marco: Recon 1 skills check [2d6+1]=5+1=6

Nothing obvious appears to him it seems.
Monte, are you going to take the cutter over there an look, or what? What are you basing this on?

At the starport, you can find a grade school level of education (4 paragraphs on the incursion) that is set for the TAS. You might want to see if you could find a local library and study there.

At Phoenix mining,
GM said:
They should have finished the survey, if you could find them or at least the survey info, that would be acceptable but don't think me crass, those crewmen's lives are important.. You would be hired at standard contract rates on a day by day basis, and when successful, you would receive another 30 days of contract as a fee, on top of the contract I believe the commission rates at finance is 250 credits per person per day, plus 750 for the ship. Daily check ins, weekly reports as such. do you need a weeks pay to buy fuel and supplies?
"So what do you think 'standard contract rates' are? You are being a bit vague not naming a bottom line. We will not need any advance. I do need to meet the super numerray you wish to send along, and this persons role and responsibilities need to be spelled out. Until I have more specifics I can not say yes or no."

--------

Later, onboard the Train to the Stars....

Hiro calls together the entire crew, including the recruits, and explains his provisional concept of operations.

His intention is to overfly the fortress island in the Train to the Stars, collecting information about the fortress and the area around it, using the ship's sensors.
Afterwards, if the mission to the "scout island" was accepted, the ship will proceed to the "scout island" and land there. If that contract was not accepted, he intends to then land on the "fortress island", some distance from the fort, under the guise of a social visit to the area. Hiro thinks the best way to enter the fort would be gaining an invitation to enter by subterfuge.

"My apologies, but I am not fully aware of your skill sets as I should be,but I will try to become more familiar with each of you. Until then I am going to have to rely upon each of you to volunteer any ideas to modify the concept of operations, or to suggest ways your particular skill sets can assist in planning."

"I am going to head over to a weapons manufacturer to pick up eight shotguns I ordered. I thought they would be a good addition for the crew and recruits, particularly for self protection on high law level worlds."

After Hiro finds a cabbie that can take him to the address, It is a first floor walkup, front door. 'DB Weapons for the elite' is above the locked gate.
Knock for entry is on the glass door behind the gate.

Having Ophelia knock for you a few moments later, a man about as old as Dyer looks through the glass and open the glass door.

He introduces himself and seems standoffish, until you hand him his card. "Ah your the off world friend of lead bottom., come on in"

Opening the gate and locking it afterwards, "I understand you want shotguns, I have a few, you will have to excuse me, if you want to buy a weapon we will have to contact the cops as they need to witness and statement and fill out those forms.

He points to single and double barrel shot guns on satin racks on the wall, "I have 3 triple and a double rifle double shotgun I just finished, four in one so to say.

After you mention pump shotguns he looks a bit crestfallen, "I do have those, the military buys them, and I do have 10 12 gauge in stock. They have a 5 round canister and made for trench fighting with a bayonet lug and shorter barrel, handmade for 250 of your credits each. Yes they are expensive, but you not find one better or good as looking. I can send you to someone who can sell you ammo."

Asking about cheaper ones, "The market for the masses is not there yet, unless you want a black powder variety which was a bad idea, lots o' cleaning."

Ophelia does handle it and seems to appreciate it, asks about checking the cycle and is given brass cartridges which have no propellant in it. It cycles very quiet and smooth.

2000 credits for 8 shotguns, shells are 1.5 credits each, more expensive because they are all brass reusable cartridges.

She points out the information. "I can start here."
Finding a library that will accept your off world credentials is somewhat difficult, but you find a local library near the original bar.

Once your in, it is like old memories stacked one floor on another, the smell of old books is overpowering.

You get a younger student to show you the system of filing and you head to the military history.

There seems to be 6 major works and several minor works on the incursion to the 'pirate island'

Basically once they were able to wear away the air power by out producing them (you get the idea the pirates were better
flyers and fighters and more specialized machines.) There were 3 landings, Dyer's was the middle one and his group was sent to a small fort.
The force inside was small but fierce, unfortunately they did not have long range rifles, so it took a short time to be able to bring the cannons close for direct fire and take the fort.

The prisoners were thrown in one of the powder rooms.

From there they withheld 5 major attacks over 25 days and lost all but Dyer in the officer corps, suffering 65% casualties when relieved.

You rolled real well.

In the margin of one of the books is written. "and if the buggers try it again, Sgt Major Adams had me take our wall explosives and put in the paraffined leather jugs and seal with paraffin, they are hidden under the main gate and the fuse is under a large red stone outside 50 yards out from the gate and 1 yard off the main road.

It has been used as a 'low level fort for those looking on making a name for themselves.

Garett uses her hand comp to take pictures of the texts mentioning the fort's layout, and the location for the buried explosives. She scans through all of the texts for any other notable nuggets about the fort's potential weaknesses.

Interview with Maris Riane the guide.

Thanks for waiting for me to arrive, I was busy at the docks setting up a expedition, as my employer said I have 25 years as a guide and also do my countries business, I can fight, shoot and wave a fair sword. I speak almost all the worlds languages. But first, of the Imperial tongues, Galangic, Core, Cant. Marine Battle Sign and to a lesser degree a sort of merchant language I am working thru.

In the Omderv branch, I am familiar with OmDer, The Richellian dialect.. Dondorian and Flatke.

Beside Hebov the Guide language, I have specialized in ancient Guide, Darvian and Pulic, which is what I believe the language of those here before the Imperials...
I also have a useful knowledge of the main trade language Covern

I have sufficient knowledge of Darian and Phnerian to read... to a lesser degree, 4 other languages in the world, that I'm not sure if I can give a name.

I have been all around this world a few times and am willing to go in your space ship to go to the other side of the world, unlike many who live here.

Do you want me to show my rifle and pistol skill? Or a letter of recommendation from the Department of Security?

Maris is 5'7", 140 lbs, skinny but jacked. a few visible wounds, nothing new. He stands comfortably and secure waiting for a reply.

For what it is there are no weaknesses, but it was made in a time of little indirect fire. It can take a cannon shot head on, but a light mortar can play havoc just on the other side of the firing lines. Also no air defense at all for a Country that tips towards airships.

Also the front door is to thin for todays technology.

The rest you would have to do with a aerial view or maybe a recon on the ground.

As far as the cutter is concerned, it has never been flight tested, just positioned correctly in the hangar. It might be worth working on that if you want me to do a flypast of the fort.

We should probably still test-fly the thing, it might be our escape-craft, and I'd prefer to know I can rely on it.

Done up in its paintwork as a Scout Enforcement vessel, it might have more reason to be flying in the vicinity.

We could always do a touchdown too for a closer look.

Hiro recommends to Dev that we sell the Luxury Items on Grans, holding on to the other cargos to sell at later ports.

At Phoenix Mining, the GM said:
Do you want me to show my rifle and pistol skill? Or a letter of recommendation from the Department of Security?
"Yes, I wish to see both." responds Hiro.

Hiro is tepid about this guide, but realizes he may be useful.

After examining the documents, if he does not find any glaring problems, he will say "You are acceptable. While on the ship, you will remain in spaces designated. No wandering about or tampering with the ship. You will not be allowed to carry personal weapons. If there is a need, we will issue you weapons. And, as any ship, you recognize the ship's officers as having authority over you while traveling with us. I have had problems in the past with supernumeraries committing acts of violence, breaking laws or making nuisances of themselves. As long as you can avoid causing or getting into trouble, we will be able to work together."

At the ship, after briefing the crew on the concept of operations, Hiro turns to Marco and Gunnar. "Could you two have a look over the cutter in regards to it's air worthiness? In fact, if you could flight test it, now, near the starport, it would be beneficial. After that, we also should give a simialr examination and test of the APC. Would you two be able to do that? If not, would you be able call upon other crew or the recruits who may have the correct skills?"

Later, en route to meet with the gun manufacturer, Garrett said:
Garett uses her hand comp to take pictures of the texts mentioning the fort's layout, and the location for the buried explosives. She scans through all of the texts for any other notable nuggets about the fort's potential weaknesses.
When contacted, Hiro is amazed by the wealth of information that Garrett has been able to find. "Great work, Garrett!"

Finally, even later, at the gun manufacturer, GM said:
He points to single and double barrel shot guns on satin racks on the wall, "I have 3 triple and a double rifle double shotgun I just finished, four in one so to say. After you mention pump shotguns he looks a bit crestfallen, "I do have those, the military buys them, and I do have 10 12 gauge in stock. Hiro responds to the gun manufacturer "Yes, the 8 pump shotguns are for rank & file. I would need a thousand rounds of ammo with those; 1500 Cr for the ammunition correct? We will be paying in cash. And, yes, I would like to have the paperwork done. But more importantly, I would be very interested in a double rifle double shotgun for myself and, perhaps, a second one as a gift for a fellow officer. Could you show me your selection?"

"Well thank ee sir, Captain, I'll be your man talking to or shooting the Nists.

He shows you a 2 yo document of recommendation from the local government and at a local rifle/pistol club shows you he would easily qualify as a sharpshooter in rifle and expert with pistol in the imperial marines. "I'll get my gear then Captain?"

Marco and Gunnar take out the cutter, the paint job does not cause and local fracas, The tube and exterior could use some filing down to avoid the noise, the engines work in the high 90's after clearing out the 30+ years of sitting around. Marco you note that this cutter is a minelayer with 10 gravitic stealth mines (full load) on board, control panel is at the co-pilots position.

Hiro responds to the gun manufacturer "Yes, the 8 pump shotguns are for rank & file. I would need a thousand rounds of ammo with those; 1500 Cr for the ammunition correct? We will be paying in cash. And, yes, I would like to have the paperwork done.
You have to buy ammo at another place, but that goes without problem with your purchase paperwork and agreement to ship to your landing pad.
But more importantly, I would be very interested in a double rifle double shotgun for myself and, perhaps, a second one as a gift for a fellow officer. Could you show me your selection?"
"I only have one, but am working on a second one, if you wish to buy it I could be done in 5 days. This is a standard double barrel shotgun in want you call 12 gauge, with a double hunting rifle attached, hee hee, and she a beaut.

He takes it out of a silk case and hands it to you. Ophelia can't help but exclaim its beauty.

12.000 credits for the rifle, standard double barrel rifle mechanics, but a double rifle of hunting ammo at 7 credits each (again brass) which does 5d6 damage at rifle ranges.
Open sights

"Do I have a sale, or two? Misunderstanding you would be buying a second for Ophelia.

Marco: Explosives skills check (+2) & (Edu +1) [2d6+3]=7+3=10

Gives the Cutter a once over, noting repairs and drawing up another maintenance schedule. He straps himself in a ramps up the drives, trying to establish the speed limits of the craft and its manuevrability. It is a surprise to find mines still on board. He will check them over when docked by in the bay and make sure the fuse delays, impact triggers and charge points can be turned in and off so that one does not go off prematurely.

Once happy the Cutter could do a scout run over the fort, he reports back to Hiro and leaves the implementation of any forward observations to him.

"Aye" responds Hiro, grudgingly.

Later, while Marco and Gunnar examine the cutter, the GM said:
Marco you note that this cutter is a minelayer with 10 gravitic stealth mines (full load) on board, control panel is at the co-pilots position.
...and Marco said:

"Mines?! I have no idea how such things operate. There are so many oddball things about the starship, the cargo and the small craft I am having a hard time keeping track of all of the assets." Hiro rubs his eyes. "Marco and Gunnar, good work. If you are willing, see what you can determine about the APC. Also if you can poll the crew and recruits to determine who has experience in piloting cutters, driving APC, firing stealth mines or calling in Ortillery, it would be very helpful."

While at the gun manufacturer, the GM said:
12.000 credits for the rifle, standard double barrel rifle mechanics, but a double rifle of hunting ammo at 7 credits each (again brass) which does 5d6 damage at rifle ranges.
"It is a beautiful firearm, a fine piece of craftsmanship, but unfortunately it is quite outside my price range. I will be taking just the 8 pump shotguns. Bayonets also. And if you could make arrangements for the ammunition for me, and have both the shotguns and the ammunition delivered to our landing bay, I would be grateful." says Hiro while signing the paperwork and paying for both the shotguns and the ammunition, adding 10% to compensate the gentleman for his efforts to arrange the delivery of the firearms and shells, that is paying 4026Cr total in cash, which breaks down into : 2000Cr for the shotguns, 1500CR for the gun manufacturer to pay the ammunition manufacturer, 160Cr for eight bayonets, and 366Cr for his troubles in assisting with the paperwork and acting as an agent with the ammunition supplier and to have everything delivered.

Hiro settles all the matters and returns to the ship.
