The man pushes the door open, exposing himself to attacks as he does so. Because the door limits his uncovered area, up to three melee combatants may try to attack him as he does so. There is no real room in the small corridor for ranged weapons.

After the first three attackers (if there are any), a normal melee begins, and initiative is required.

Daryl throws his lit torch at the man-thing. 1d20 = 5 (d'oh...) +1 = 6. He'll burn 8 Luck to get it to a 14, and pray that's a hit. If it is, impact damage from torch (as club) would be 1d4 = 2 + 1 = 3; fire damage = 1d6 = 2, total 5.

Pikar will likewise throw his lit torch at the man-thing. 1d20 = 14 + 1 = 15. Assuming that's a hit, he'll roll damage from torch as a club 1d4 = 4! - 1 = 3; fire damage = 1d6 = 4, total 7.

Grim will take a free swing at the thing with his hammer. 1d20 = 6 (drat).


[Edit: I know you said no real room for ranged weapons, but a thrown torch is a bit different from a bow or a sling...]

The poor gentleman is only AC 12, so Daryl need burn only 6 Luck.

With a surprised look, the rag-dressed man-thing is beaten to death by two clubs as he pushes open the door. Both torches go out as he is struck, but you see the creature slide to the floor with a dented and scorched cranium.

It's skin is cold to the touch, although it otherwise seems like it was a living being.

It does not appear to be bleeding. And it is not merely cool to the touch. It is cold.

Daryll slides up. "What's it got on it?" He starts rummaging around in the rags.

As soon as everybody is ready, Pikar will open the door at the opposite end of this little hallway they're in.

Pikar sees a hallway, about 10 ft wide and vaulted to a height of 12 ft at its apex, going south for 10 ft and then turning to the right.

The passage goes 10 feet to the west before turning south. The closest 10 feet of wall to the north contains an archway that has been sealed with brick and mortar.

It is actually literally bricked up, with mortar. It could be busted down, but that would require something along the lines of a heavy sledge.

It is not effective. Indeed, too much of that will destroy the chest, not the bricked-up archway.
