Third Time's the Charm
Re: Third Time's the Charm
Once Kjelti is through the door, Hollis clasps his symbol and the maiden's shoulder; bows his head and intones the words of his most potent healing prayer:
Cure Serious Wounds [2d8+1] = 13+1 = 14
"There my friend I thought we were to lose you then."

Re: Third Time's the Charm
Vorsyin begins to cast Wall of Fire to create a barrier between the giants and the party inside the room. He will begin the casting but will hold until the last possible moment to try to allow Kjelti every chance to enter.
If however the party looks like they will be overrun he will raise the wall even if Kjelti doesn't make it in. The good of the party outweighs the good of just one member.

Re: Third Time's the Charm
The giant mob seizes a narrow initiative.
The juggernaut again tries to end Kjelti’s life with a sideways blow from his heavy flail. The warrior-maiden desperately ducks what would have most certainly been a killing blow. The flail ball crashes into the outbuilding in a shower of splinters.
However, Nosra sees the badly wounded Kjelti fighting for her life. He smiles menacingly, takes careful aim with his crossbow, and lets a huge bolt loose. Kjelti does not even see the bolt as it tears through her jugular and windpipe, and then sticks in the wet ground. The fighter is left unconscious, involuntarily gagging on her own blood as she slides down the spear-sized bolt.
NATURAL 20!!! KJELTI DOWN!!!
Two ogres charge into the outbuilding. One attacks Antheris, and the other attacks Hollis. The druid’s new leather armor serves him well as it provides just the edge he needs to avoid injury from the attack. The ogre’s mallet smashes into Hollis, but fails to injure the heavily armored cleric.
The hornfoot leader and the other hornfoot suffering the musk attack continue to hold their faces and rub their eyes. The crossbowman is similarly incapacitated.
Gaerys, valiantly holding the party’s position, faces attacks from the badly wounded giant, the weakened giant, and a hornfoot. The badly wounded giant disregards the need for weapons, hops to its feet, and kicks the ranger hard in the gut. Gaerys’s already broken ribs throb with intense pain as the wind is knocked out of him. Somehow, he keeps himself composed enough to fend off the two other attacks with his magic shield, and then manages to scramble back inside of the outbuilding. The backs of the ogres who had entered the outbuilding stare temptingly at him.
GAERYS 12 DAMAGE
The party cannot see through the furious combat as to what the ogres to the north are doing, if they have a line of sight at all.
Antheris casts his charm, targeting the hornfoots including their leader. Hollis feels the spell take effect of the crossbowman and, fortunately for the party, the hornfoot unaffected by the musk (who is notable for several large scars on her face). Antheris barks his orders at them to roll away from combat and they just start to move to comply. The leader and the hornfoot in his rank are not charmed (though it hardly matters, given their blindness).
Hollis’s movement to Kjelti is blocked by the attacking ogre.
Vorsyin prepares one of his most powerful evocations, the wall of fire. He waits and waits for Kjelti and, when he sees her go down and the ogres enter the room, with Nosra and the juggernaut just behind...the threat of being overrun becomes all too real. The cold, calculated mage who had lost so much in his life decides that the good of the party outweighs the good of just one member,
so he lets loose. An inferno erupts just outside the door. The gentle warmth the party feels belies the raging flames just outside. The party hears the deep moan of the juggernaut roasting. But their brief moment of relief fades to panic, as they realize that Kjelti's body has been incinerated...

Re: Third Time's the Charm
Gaerys reddens with anger and shame as Kjelti's life is added to the ledger of his mistake. He tries to summon his most commanding voice, which unfortunately isn't that commanding. "Into the barracks," he shouts. "Now!" He attacks the northern-more ogre, but his thoughts are on regret, not his sword, and he misses badly.
Giantbane (vs. giant type): [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4 Damage: [1d12+11] = 3+11 = 14
Not a good time for that roll.

Re: Third Time's the Charm
Vorsyin immediately moves back into the barracks and unrolls the scroll of Hold Monster. He reads the magical scroll and uses the power contained within to attempt to hold both Ogres in the outbuilding.
Re: Third Time's the Charm
Any chance Hollis could have re-directed that CSW to Antheris when Kjelti didn't make it through the doors?
I'll wait for an updated map before figuring out Antheris's next move, I don't think having the charmed hornfoot charge through the wall of fire would be something that would work

I'll allow it if the player is willing to do it. It makes sense.NJWilliam wrote:Any chance Hollis could have re-directed that CSW to Antheris when Kjelti didn't make it through the doors?

Re: Third Time's the Charm
Re the CSW - yes happy to give to Antheris. That was last round wasn't it. Ill assume so for the below
Hollis swings his mace ineffectually at the closest foe:
mace Attack [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8 Damage S [1d6+3] = 3+3 = 6 L [1d6+2] = 3+2 = 5
Gah what is it with this roller! At least the heal was good. My only good roll in the last 30 or so!

Antheris, (hp 30/48)
Antheris scowls at the ogre at melee with him and digs into his pouch for mistletoe.
Crushing the mistletoe in his fist, he intones the ancient phrases for Summon Insects, calling them for the area immediately in front of him currently occupied by an ogre.
Antheris Summon Insects (70% flying swarm chance): [1d100] = 1

Round 5
Chaos reigns as the shock of Kjelti's death sends the party into a panic. The ogres, now isolated and surrounded, are not necessary the most calm beings in the multiverse either. Flames roar in the background and heat up the room; the "gentle warmth" building up to cause some discomfort in an enclosed, crowded space. The ogres and party start to sweat profusely, which adds to the frantic atmosphere in the room.
The ogres take the initiative and attack Antheris and Hollis respectively. Their swings each miss horribly.
Hollis strikes back and his swing is just as bad as the ogres'.
Gaerys tries to dispatch an ogre with Giantbane as he moves into the barracks. His swing is the worst of the bunch -- missing the ogres completely and sticking hard in the wooden wall.
Sword will take one round to remove. Not bad as critical fumbles go.
Antheris and Vorsyin each begin casting...Vorsyin's spell takes effect first. Both ogres instantly freeze from the powerful magic! Antheris's spell comes into effect mere seconds later. The ogre closer to him is quickly covered by stinging ants.
The party has won a temporary respite, though the clock of combat continues to tick. They are left to collect themselves and plan their next move.
**********************************************
Ethan reaches the closed east gate of the Steading. As he pulls up, out of breath, he sees the roaring flames from the Wall of Fire, which he recognizes as Vorsyin's likely work, he sees and hears the grunts of Nosra and only a few other giants. His follower is several minutes behind him.

Antheris
Antheris steps back from the ogres, and seeing them already magically held, directs the flying ants off of the ogre and has them amass by the entrance to engulf the next foe that walks through the fire.
"We will have to take this fight to what remains outside, lest they simply wait us out. Who saw what remained of our foes and their positions just before the fire went up?
"I have but one minor healing spell, and one healing mushroom from Crowseye, I can protect one of us from fire.
"Let us heal what we can and push these flames to them, once they are inside the flames, the ants can immobilize one of them!"

The wall of flame is stationary in its wall form. But if Gaerys could get some healing, a protection from evil, and a protection from fire, he'd stride through the fire to take on Nosra and the juggernaut.

Vorsyin shakes his head. In this form I cannot move the wall. It will remain for a short time but that is all. He looks at the two Ogres left frozen. We must dispatch those quickly and formulate a plan. He pauses for a moment. How many more foes await us outside? Norsa and how many others? I don't know if we can attack them directly and I am not sure if the way we escaped the first time will be available for us again...
He turns to face the group. While the wall is up I can use its heat to summon a fire elemental. It is risky and I will need you to protect me lest I lose my concentration, but it may be worth the risk..

Re: Third Time's the Charm
"Leave the ogres be for now," answers Gaerys. "They aren't going anywhere for a while, and they make effective doorstops."
"I will attack Nosra and his juggernaut directly, if someone can give me the ability to pass through that fire unharmed. Giantbane will taste Nosra's flesh," Gaerys declares as he works the sword from the wall with both hands, "if I can—oof—get it to stop snacking on wood."

Re: Third Time's the Charm
You will face Nosra and how many others at the same time? asks Vorsyin angrily. These doorstops will regain their freedom shortly and will kill us if we don't take our advantage now.
Re: Third Time's the Charm
"Yes, I will," answers Gaerys as he continues to pull the sword out of the wall. "They will die, if I can attack with your help instead of your complaints. And if they don't, the rest of you would be able to get the hell out of here while I take them on."

Your stupidity has already led to at least one death, adding your own does not make it better!!
Re: Third Time's the Charm
Gaerys glares at Vorsyin. "I do not need you to remind me of my mistake!" he shouts. "Are you trying to match it?"
He finally pulls Giantbane from the wall. Regaining his sword, he also regains his composure. "Do what you will," he says quietly. "But I will not stand idle for ten minutes while the enemy regroups their forces, just so that you can summon a creature that would as soon kill us as help us."
