Gold is good for three things in Shadow Dark, as best I can tell. You spend the gold on Equipment like weapons or armor, gain XP by Carousing, or you develop new skills or master those you have by Learning. I'll post the following in the Resources thread as well...Marullus wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 10:36 amCoin:1 XP.

LEARNING
Learning is an alternate Downtime activity to Carousing. Only one or the other may be pursued during a single Downtime. Carousing is primarily used to increase a PC's XP, while Learning is primarily used to improve a PC's skills.
Learning requires an instructor who is paid for their time in gold as well as successfully making appropriate Attribute Checks.
Learning enables you to do new actions, gives you advantage on certain checks, or helps you master a skill you currently have. You can't typically learn another class's or ancestry's unique talents, but in collaboration with the GM even that is not entirely out of the question. However, PCs can always learn auxiliary skills, master certain talents or skills they already possess or that are appropriate for their Class/Ancestry, and learn to use their Attributes to their Advantage in specific situations.
Examples of auxiliary skills might include learning a new language or driving a wagon.
Examples of mastery of a talent or skill might include a Fighter mastering a Weapon Class (+1 on to hit/dam/ +1/2 level), a Thief gaining mastery of their ability to pick locks (add +1 to your already Advantaged rolls), a Bard mastering their ability to play a specific instrument (gaining Advantage when performing with it), or a spell caster gaining mastery of one spell (-1 on that specific spells difficulty).
You can't directly increase an Attribute through Learning, but you can gain an Advantage on rolls using an Attribute for specific sorts of things. Work with the GM to determine what Checks and in what situations your character can gain Advantage on an Attribute Check.
An example of an Advantaged check would be the Dex & Chr checks I've been giving Vesper whenever she performs dances (Tiglith has been rolling Vesper's performance and secretly I've been rolling as well, that's all been behind the screen and will remain so.) Elizabeth and Tinu have danced as well, but neither JR nor archolewa have gone the route of Learning dance to the point where either gains an Advantage on Checks related to dancing. If Tinu or Elizabeth wished to pursue Dance as an actual skill that the players can put on their sheets they have to train in it. They would have to spend time specifically Learning that skill...gaining an Advantage on both Chr and Dex specifically for dance. In this case Dex is for the technique of the dance and Chr is for the performance of it. The sheet would reflect this as a skill with advantage not the attributes because the advantage is for Attribute Checks for that specific skill only.
In order to Learn something you must find a capable instructor who is willing to teach you, pay an agreed upon amount of gold to them for their time, and succeed in one or more Attribute Check. The Attribute Check could be against any of the 6, as determined by the GM, and may take successes against multiple Attributes.
The above are examples only. The GM may allow PC's to Learn all sorts of things. Each case must be worked out and agreed upon in advance by the Player and the GM. When this is worked out you will be determining what you can try to learn, who will be your teacher, what it is going to cost, how long it will take, and what Checks you will need to make.
Once all is agreed upon you make extreme (DC 18) Attribute checks as agreed upon. If you succeed, you learn or master something. If you fail, you can try again as your next downtime activity, this time lowering the difficulty of the check by one step [15, 12, 9, 6].
