PC building thread

Interesting that there are relatively few changes from the standard version of a PC, when creating the solo version. Let's create my solo PC and I'll try to note the differences along the way.

We're going to cheat a bit here, as we'll take advantage of the rule that says "if you randomly roll your scores, you can pick one attribute to change to a score of 14. We rolled 5 times but the third set is obviously the superior one, and we'll change the 5 CHR to 14. That leaves us with:

15 STR (+1)
13 DEX
17 CON (+1)
09 INT
12 WIS
14 CHR (+1)

I am going to exercise GM fiat here and flip his INT and WIS scores. There are some things I'd like him to be good at, and INT will help. I decide on Spacer as his Background so he gets Fix-0. I decide to take three random rolls over two chosen ones. On the Growth table, I get +2 to any Mental Stat. I will boost his INT to 14, which gets him the +1. For Learning, I get Administer and Program.

I am going to go with Expert as his class, as I am assuming that the perks of the solo rules will help enough in combat. Experts get a second Focus, as long as it's in a non-combat oriented Focus. For my free Focus, I choose Gunslinger. He needs to get some sort of combat skill so this gives him Shoot-0 plus some added benefits. Now I need to decide what he's good at. I think he'll be a jack-of-all-trades but have some skill to fall back on when all else fails. So we'll go with Specialist: Trade.

For his final skill, I'll go with Connect. I think it'll help with a number of jobs he may be considering, from Bounty Hunter to Trader to Explorer.

He gets max HP as a solo PC, so 6 plus 1 for his CON score = 7 HP. His Base Attack Bonus is 0. Saving throws are:

14 Physical
14 Mental
14 Evasion

Time to walk the dog and go to bed so we'll deal with equipment later.

I had not read the new SWN Revised that closely and, in the process of searching for the word 'solo' in the book, I discovered the rules for Heroic Characters. I am going to start character creation over and use these rules, rather than the older rules in Stellar Heroes.

: 6#4d6k3 16 10 14 12 14 9 This set of rolls gives me:

16 STR (+1)
10 DEX
14 CON (+1)
12 INT
14 WIS (+1)
09 CHR

Actually a bit worse than my previous set of rolls but I do get to change one to an 18. I want to boost all of my low scores but one is going to be left out. We'll jack up DEX to 18.

Going to stick with the same Background and rolls so he's a Spacer. We'll once again boost his INT to 14 to get the +1 bonus. (The end result is he has a lower CHR but the extra bonus point in DEX.)

I am also going to try the Heroic Adventurer, which will allow him to have all three partial classes!

For Expert, I will take Specialist: Trade
For Psychic, I will take Biopsionics.
For Warrior, I get a free level in a combat focus related to my background. I don't immediately see a Focus related to my Spacer background so I'm just going to take Gunslinger.

For my free Focus, I will take Tinker. That takes Fix up to 1.

For my free Skill, I feel like Pilot would be a good choice here but if we get into space combat, he's going to be the Engineer with his Fix skills. Let's stay with Connect.

For HP, Adventurers get 1d6, +1 (for CON) and + 2 for Partial Warrior. Heroic Adventurers get half of the max HP, rounded up. So he starts with 5 HP.

I rolled his attributes as Attributes: 6#3d6 10 7 10 9 8 10 I am changing his 9 INT to 14.
I figured I'd roll his Background randomly instead of making him a Pilot but guess what popped up? Background: 1d20 12 12 is Pilot.
Background: 1d6 2 2#1d8 7 5 The '2' is +2 Physical. We'll bring that DEX up to 9. The '7' and '5' are Shoot and Pilot. Add in the free Skill point he gets and he's already at Pilot-1.
I could see him as an Adventurer but for the sake of simplicity, we'll make his class Expert.
Since he was previously a solo scavenger, we'll say Alert makes the most sense for him as a Focus.
For his final Skill, I couldn't decide between Connect (to help him find out about these places to scavenge from) or Sneak (to get in and out of these places without being noticed) so I rolled for it. Connect or Sneak: 1d2 2 Sneak it is.
He gets the Equipment package for a Thief.

Attributes: 6#3d6 13 11 11 8 4 11 Decent attributes, except for the 4 in WIS. I am actually inclined to leave it in place. I want to raise her INT but I think, because I originally rolled her up as 'attractive', I will put the 14 in CHR.
Background: 1d20 4 Criminal. I guess it makes more sense that she didn't care when Olga tried to rob the miners.
Growth and Learning: 2d6 2 1d8 1 So I get +1 Any Stat twice, and Administer. I have no idea where to put these stats so we'll roll randomly.
: 2#1d6 2 4 DEX and INT go up to 12 and 9. And she has Sneak-0 and Administer-0. I wonder if she worked for a company and stole from them.
She's another one that should be an Expert, given that she's supposed to be an Engineer.
I feel like she's good at manipulating people, I mean she got Adam to hire her! So I'm going with Connected as her Focus.
And she's supposed to be an Engineer so I will give her Fix-0.

She gets the Technician equipment package.
EDIT: Judy gets an extra non-combat skill because she's an Expert. Talk seems to be a good choice here for a manipulator like her.

: 6#3d6 11 11 11 10 11 9 Some pretty ordinary attribute rolls here. We'll boost her DEX to 14.
Background: 1d20 16 That's a Spacer. Fix-0 is the free Skill.
Growth or Learning: 1d2 2 One Growth roll and two Learning rolls.
Growth and Learning rolls: 1d6 5 2#1d8 3 1 Exert-0, Administer-0, and Exert-1. Olga is in great physical shape!
Olga was the former Raider so her class is Warrior. Since she's got the focus on her physical skills, we'll give her Punch-0.
hp: 1d6+2 5 5 hp
BAB of +1
Punch is a tough skill in a world where everyone has a ranged weapon so we'll give her Unarmed Combatant as her Focus. She goes up to Punch-1.
I'm imagining Olga as a pencil pusher who longed for a more exciting life, so she left her boring job and joined a pirate crew. I'm looking at the options for the Spacer background. Since she has Administer-0 already, I'm going to give her Know-0 as well.
She has the Civilian equipment package.
EDIT: Olga gets a combat-related skill that fits her background, as a Warrior. She needs Shoot to be able to fire the weapons on a ship so Shoot-0 it is!

Initial attribute rolls are solid enough. No negatives and a +1 CHR. I am going to raise the 8 INT to 14 since I think I'm going to lean Comms for this NPC.
With the Explorer roll, I'll make her a Vagabond background. Survive-0 to start.
: 1d6 1 2#1d8 2 4 That's +1 Any Stat, Connect-0, and Perform-0. I will add +1 to DEX.
We'll go Expert for her class. I am going to give her Hacker for one Focus and Henchkeeper as the other. With the Perform skill and relatively high CHR, I envision her as a minor rock star who can find groupies all over the place.
Hacker gives her Program-0 and Henchkeeper gives her Lead-0. I think Talk-0 makes sense as her final skill. No good in combat though.
: 1d6 6 Max HP!
We'll give her the Hacker equipment package, plus she has a Stalker drone. She must have bought it with the creds she made from her one hit album.

Some bad rolls here but some good ones. We'll raise up the 3 to a 14 in INT. Still got a low CON.
I'm going to use the Criminal background, as it takes the skills of a thief to catch a thief. Sneak-0.
Going to roll twice on the Growth table and hope for +2 Physical so I can get his CON to 8.
: 2#1d6 4 5 1d8 6 Nope. That's +2 Mental, Connect-0, and Sneak-1.
We'll put the +2 in WIS, taking it to 14.
Going to go against the grain here and take Psychic. He's a specific type of Investigator, one that is on the lookout for other Psychics. So we'll give him Metapsionics and Telekinesis.
We'll go with Alert as his Focus. Notice-0.
And since he is physically unimposing, his final skill will be Shoot-0.
: 1d6-1 5 Lucky HP roll, with the low CON.
Thief equipment package for him.

From here on out, I'm rolling on my Excel sheet using RANDBETWEEN. Faster for me, especially when I need to create 3 new NPCs.
We'll make the 6 STR into a 14.

The VI was described as 'uncanny' so we'll assume she looks like a human. (Rolled a d2 and randomly chose female) We'll go with Android as the free Focus pick. Her bonus skill will be Administer-0.
I rolled a d20 and got 20 for Background so she's a Worker. We'll roll 1d6 and 2d8. (5, 2, 7)
Work-0 is the free Skill.
5 is Exert-0
2 is Any skill so we'll go with Stab-0
7 is Program-0

I'll go with Expert for her, and Hacker as her second, non-Combat Focus. Program-1 now.

One more bonus skill so we'll lean into the Worker background and give her Exert-1.

Nice max roll for HP so 7/7.
BAB of 0
She will get the Blade equipment package.
Name will be Japanese. Mayumi Abe.

I forgot to roll for Character Role, which is where the Researcher comes from. EDIT: I actually rolled and got AI so we'll just use Researcher as an expansion of her previous life's role.

I like the combo of INT and CHR and I want to make her the Captain of the Courser once I head off on the Queen of the Void. So let's make her an Expert, give her Specialist (Trade) as her non-combat Focus (Trade-0) and Star Captain (Lead-0) as her other Focus. We'll give her Connect-1 as her final Skill. At this point, with her +2 from INT, she's a better Trader than Adam! Which is good because she has no combat skills.

4 on the HP roll so 5/5 in total. BAB is 0. Scout equipment package.

Leveling up Adam to LVL 3

Roll additional hit points - the Partial Warrior rolls 3d6+9 so the max possible hp is 27. Rounded up, half of that is 14 hp.
Improve attack bonus - the Base Attack Bonus remains at +2
Improve saving throws - All SV scores decrease by one (12 Physical, 12 Mental, 11 Evasion)
Gain and spend skill points - Adam gets 4 skill points, one extra by virtue of being a Partial Expert. He also has one remaining from level 2.

He spends two points on improving Psychic Succor to Level-1. He can also pick a new technique from his Biopsionics discipline, albeit only from the Level-1 selections. Adam chooses Organic Purification Protocols, which allows him to cure any poisons or diseases. His Effort rises to 3.

With 2 of his remaining 3 points, Adam will raise Shoot to 1. He will save the last point for the next level (which must be spent on a non-psychic, non-combat skill).

One new Focus - I feel like Naru is jealous of Adam because he also wants to be a ship captain. So he's going to take Star Captain and gain Lead-0.

Four skill points, one extra from the Expert class. 2 to raise Lead to 1. One in Talk-0. One in Connect-0.

Leveling Olga to LVL 2

lvl 2 hp: 2d6+4 11 Her HP go from 5 to 11.
BAB goes from 1 to 2.
Saves go to 14, 14, 13
One new Focus - We'll go with Unarmed Combatant-2.

3 skill points to raise Punch to 2.

Leveling Kayla to LVL 2

One new Focus - Since she's a Close Quarters Combat expert, let's go with Savage Fray. Stab goes to 1.

Four skill points for Mayumi. We'll go with 1 point in Sneak-0 and 3 points in Stab-2.

Leveling Akintola to lvl 2
lvl 2 hp: 2d6+6 15 HP go from 6 to 15!
BAB goes from 1 to 2
Saves go to 13, 14, 14
One new Focus - We'll go with Connected-1. Connect goes to 1.

Leveling Helena to lvl 2

lvl 2 hp: 2d6+2 13 She goes from 5 to 13 hp.

Focus - Authority seems to fit here. Lead goes to 1.

Four skill points. Heal, Shoot, Survive, and Talk, all to 0.

Leveling Esana to lvl 2

lvl 2 hp: 2d6-2 5 He rolled the same 5 hp as level 1 so he goes up 1 to 6.
BAB goes from 0 to 1.
Saves go to 14, 13, 13
One new Focus - I'm going to make him a Specialist in Talk.

3 skill points for Esana. I will use 2 points to raise his Core Techniques from 0 to 1. This grants him two new level 1 techniques.

For Metapsionics, I choose Mindtracing. For Telekinesis, I choose Telekinetic Armory.

He'll save the last point for the next level.

I rolled and got a 5 and a 4 so I decided to re-roll. That worked out... better. If Adam ever dies or retires, I may have to play Kiana.

Going with Pilot background. I will make three rolls on the Learning table, as she doesn't need any more Growth bonuses to stats.

She's an Expert. Since she has high STR, we'll go with Unarmed Combatant for one Focus and Diplomat as her bonus Focus from Expert. Talk-0 and Punch-0. We'll add Connect-1 as her final skill.

We're going right to level 2. 9 HP. +1 BAB. Saves are PHY 12, MEN 13, EVA 13. New Focus is Authority. Lead-0. We'll add Heal-0, Stab-0, Shoot-0, and save the last point for next time.

Gunslinger equipment package.

I'm going to interpret "Mystic" broadly and take the Physician background. Heal-0. We'll do three rolls on the Learning table. : 3#1d8 3 5 3 Fix, Know, and Fix again.
Psychic class. Just to mix it up, we'll take two techniques new to me: Precognition and Teleportation.

We'll make Healer the choice for a Focus. And since she was a mercenary guard, we'll give her Shoot-0 to finish up.

Soldier equipment package. Actually, let's switch to Gunslinger. She's not strong enough to both carry a Combat Rifle and wear Woven Body Armor.

Upgrade to Level 2. 9 HP. BAB of +1. Saves of PHY 13, MEN 13, EVA 13.

We'll add two skill points to Teleportation to bring it to level 1. And we'll add Proficient Apportation as her new technique. For her third skill point, we'll take Talk-0. And since it makes sense, I will make her second Focus Gunslinger and raise her Shoot to 1.

Makes sense to go with the Scholar background. Her Mental stats are good enough that I can roll three times on the Learning table instead. : 3#1d8 1 6 5
Know-0, Administer-0, Perform-0, Notice-0

Expert class. A Comms expert would need Program so we'll take Hacker as her non-Combat Focus (Program-0). I also think Diplomat makes sense here (Talk-0). Finally, since she's an Distracted Outcast who's uncovered crime, we'll give her Shoot-0.

Moving to 2nd level. I rolled 5 for her HP, not great. BAB is +1. Saves are PHY 14, MEN 13, EVA 13. Hacker equipment package.

We'll go with Die Hard for her 2nd level Focus. That will get her HP up to 9/9.

I'll spend 1 skill point to raise her WIS to 18 and get the +2 bonus. We'll spend another 2 points to raise Notice to 1, we'll save the last point for next time.
