Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Who is going? This mainly concerns the humans since they might be evil (Dramm) and are in the Western Plains (Jiho).
Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
JJh will be clear on the mission; the goal is bringing the goblins into Jing. Fighting them is failure.
scarik, did the Plains Nomads give any information about how hostile the Goblins are? For example, to the nomads only visit with a few hundred riders, or are smaller caravans safe?

Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Azgar's people travel as a group and camp outside the goblin town. They try to keep their warriors away from each other since it often devolves into excessive drinking and racing. Ie they are relatively friendly. Certainly more so than any Dawi will believe.Leitz wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 12:11 am JJh will be clear on the mission; the goal is bringing the goblins into Jing. Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
As mentioned, Dramm and Barnaby both are interested in goblin diplomacy. Dramm notes Ji-ho's instruction to bring the goblins into the Jing fief, but privately ponders what he should do if he senses irredeemable evil.

Earnan does not wish to go. He explains that he has no skill in negotiation and that if the nomads are to be involved, perhaps they may get on better without him. He seems to feel that they dislike him. And if he can be spared, he would welcome the opportunity to visit Borderton.

Morwen has important wizardly research to do, and also feels her presence might detract from the negotiations. As such, she'll be staying in Ravenswell.
Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Starting this out, let me know if anything needs changing.
Jiho
Drotik had been training the troops well. Jiho watched the mixed heavy foot and crossbow unit stay well coordinated. Half of the lighter troops were forward and in front with one of the rangers, the other half followed up in the rear with another ranger. Morphin kept everyone on track, and Aneq's horse were ranging well.
"What do you think will happen?" Jiho asked Dramm and Barnaby as they rode along. "We are different, but perhaps more alike than many would want to admit. That they have a thousand living in relative peace speaks well of them."
Hemia said little, but stayed by Jiho.
Peeps from JJh's crew
JJh
Drotik
Maja
Hemia
Erikir
5/5 HI/HxB
5/1, 5/1 LI/Ranger
Aneq (Azgar's son) and his riders
A couple of pack horses with beer.

Dramm looked ahead for a while before speaking. "We've heard of no raids from them," he says. "Didn't one of their wolf bands pass us by, without harm? That might have gone different without the wolves that Earnan brought to us. Hard to say what will happen. Let's go in honestly, and see."

No, error on my part. Erikir will be in the group. I'll add him above so I don't forget. Also, it was in my head but I hadn't written it down that there's some beer for the goblins, too.

Jiho
After a while, Jiho spoke to Dramm again. "What led you to become a Paladin?"

This quest marks the first time you have to provision yourselves. I believe you all are on foot and only the Nomads are mounted.
It costs 2 farthings (half a penny) to provision a person for a week. Cost of mules/etc (if needed) is factored into this.
JJh has 25 people (at 3 hexes per day the rangers can forage and offset some cost)
Dramm has 2
The Nomads take care of themselves.
Its 2 days from Eastfort to Goblintown.
Provisions must be bought up front. How prepared do you wish to be? 'We eat rations and hope to forage for herbs' is a perfectly valid answer.
I will also need the value and type of any gifts you intend to bring.

JJh, Hemia, and Morphin are mounted. 15p would cover everyone and have spare, correct? The rangers can forage and add to the mix. Eastfort makes beer, what's the cost for what two pack mounts can carry?scarik wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 9:49 pm This quest marks the first time you have to provision yourselves. While it is not a war party, everyone is armed and we act and make camp as if it was. Morphin will see to it!
The first camp can be the guard post we used at the Dawi watchfort.

Barnaby funds simple foods for him and Dramm. The noble bard has not taken any oath of poverty!

Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Update.
Jjh Hemia and Morphin Drotik are mounted. Do they have warhorses or just riding?
Dramm and Barnaby are as well. Dramm has 4 horses: a warhorse, 2 riding horses (so one for Barnaby) and a pack horse. His Paladin status allows level based upkeep as if he was a henchman of the Order.
The provisioning cost of a horse carrying a rider with access to fodder at human marching speed is the same a person. So having a riding horse doubles your provisioning cost. Being outfitted as proper cavalry (multiple horses) is 4x the cost of infantry.
Beer costs a copper penny per gallon and then you have the cost of containers.
A 'barrel of beer' is 31 gallons and costs 3p including the barrel. It weighs 250lbs. A mule can pull a cart with 2 of these loaded on it (2 barrels is a hogshead for some reason). 8 barrels is a tun (which weights a ton) and takes 4 mules with single carts, 2 large carts with 2 mules/1 ox pulling each or a wagon pulled by 2 oxen.

Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
JJh and crew are on riding horses, since war horses are 2,400p.
On beer, for this venture, probably 4 bbl; 2 mules and 2 carts, but we're taking the mules and carts back with us. Given that, Maja will probably join the troop to talk more beer at a good price, and evaluate what markets might open up.

Before I continue on did you want a chance to answer this question?
Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Dramm looks at the Eastern captain who has become nobility. "The touch of evil," he replies.

Re: Gabbing with Goblins (Spring 669)
Jiho nodded. "I think, in some ways, we are similar. We have fought evil that others only see in their nightmares. But perhaps we are also different? Seeing evil up close led me to chose to be less; less structured, less rigid in my thinking. I cannot understand all that evil is, so I must do whatever is necessary to fight it."
He nodded forward, and said, "Many here seem to think all goblins are evil, and all orcs. Where I am from, orcs can be evil. Or they can be soldiers who fight with enthusiasm. Goblins are different; like men, some are evil and many are not. If I can enlist the goblins into the fight against evil then they help the good."
