Torvik "Sound advice, if it weren't our mission leadin us inward." he comments on the message to turn back. He rests his hand on the hilt of his magical sword.

Bryne

"Stay alert!"

Bryne will quickly search the bedding area and then move to enter the passage.

“Any one who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eyes are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light” ~ Plato

Bryne takes a moment to examine the decaying bedding but it pretty much disintegrates in her hands. Whomever, slept upon it, did so many, many years past. Moving towards the passage she slips within its walls followed by the others. Here the walls are about two persons abreast and the ceiling roughly eight feet high. The area is silent save for the sound of your footsteps. Then Bryne suddenly holds up her hand to halt. Ahead, those behind can see the reflection of light upon the floor ahead. Some dark liquid covers the passageway floor ahead. It is a pool that covers the area ahead for about thirty feet. Your lanterns also show a wall ahead as the passage turns right.

Bryne

Whispering to everyone, "Hood the lanterns."

Once done she will try to sneak forward towards the light and see what she can learn.

Mave

Darkens her lantern, ever watchful as Bryne moves forward to explore. She is distrustful of the liquid covering the floor ahead and from whence the light comes. She readies an arrow in her short bow.

Torvik if he had any light source lit will "hood it" or snuff it out.

“'Twas a light that made darkness itself appear a thing of comfort.” ~ Robert Southey

The cavern before the passage is plunged into darkness as each of those holding a lantern shield their lights. Bryne is blinded but she knew her position from despite the darkness and there was still the reflection beyond the curve of the passage ahead to guide her hand as she tentatively touches the liquid before her. Niserie asks if they should prod the water ahead fearing a trap of some sort while Mave holds her bow aloft focusing on the flickering light ahead. Torvik who sees well enough in the dark has no lantern to hood too watches the light ahead as Kade steps between him and the light plunging his sword before him into the *water* and the sword barely breaks the liquid's surface before hitting the stone beneath.

Bryne then immediately realizes it is not water before her but oil. It is then the flickering light grows brighter as the beady eyes of a large rat rounds the passage turn and for a moment those looking that way think the rat is holding two torches. But in that same moment they realize two torches are strapped by a leather harness to either side of the furry beast. The rat is halfway towards you when it lets out a cry as if struck with an unseen arrow and drops dead into the pool of oil...and the torches set it afire. Flames erupt....and there is darkness no longer...

Bryne

Yells, "Get back, its a trap. The water is oil."

She bolts back, away from the oil, pushing anyone behind her away as well.

nis backs away from the oil enough that others have room to retreat as well. She raises her bow, anticipating some follow-up

Torvik backs away and grabs Kade by the arm pulling him back as well.

Mave

Mave startled by all the sudden movement accidentally looses her arrow into the flames as she staggers back from the threat.

"I will take what is mine with fire and blood." ~ George R.R. Martin

Thanks to Bryne's quick actions, and Torvik pulling his young ranger back from the flames none are injured when the fire trap is lit, though when Mave looses her arrow they hear a screech somewhere in the fire that crackles and fills the passage completely. Niserie ever vigilant prepares for the worst and that preparation is soon warranted. For from the flames at least a dozen small figures emerge and at first you think some bats were merely caught in the trap. But you are soon disabused of that notion, as numerous shapes fly from the flames and fill the upper portion of the cavern dripping fire as they rise. And then begin to dive down towards you.

"Fire bats?" Mave asks unsure if Bryne means the bats are afire, as that seemed rather obvious. Nonetheless they appear to be a threat burning or not so she swings her bow above and fires at the fires.

Torvik draws his enchanted sword fearing it is the only weapon in his possession that will do any damage to the strange bats. "Best ta stay outta this fight Kade and Ruskin I doubt normal weapons'll do much ta them." he warns his recruits. He will hold his action until something is within range of melee.

“She's mad, but she's magic. There's no lie in her fire.” ~ Charles Bukowski

Dragging flame and ash in their wake the fire bats begin to dive down from the ceiling towards the party below as they try to diminish the forces above.

Bryne the skilled archer misses her first shot the second hits her target causes it to dissipate and blink out of sight trailing ash where it had been before hit. Mave, unaware she had struck one of them accidentally while it was still in the fire, when her bow fired as she was pushed away. She quickly reloads and fires again, both shots flying wild. Torvik pulls Durvan's magical blade and readies to attack any that come his way. While Kade and Ruskin take defensive stances behind their commander per his orders. Niserie using the archery maneuver taught to her by her kin, lets loose four shots in rapid succession. Two fly wildly but two also find their target and a second bat blinks out of this plane. Thena pulls out a sling and stone at the first sight of the creatures and unbeknownst to her hits the bat previously hit by Mave's errant shot causing yet a third to disappear. Athan apparently learning from watching his half-sister's bow skill uses his long bow to fire off two shots and a fourth bat is gone. Morwen not having a missile weapon merely readies her sword shouting encouragement to her companions and she prepares for the diving attacks.

With four of the bats now defeated the remaining fifteen bats seemingly pick their targets and dive down at the party.

Next round will be melee, please state your actions.

Drawing her dagger she begins a chant to bolster her companions. An cluaran is droigheann airgid, Snàthad geur tha an duilleach air reubadh. Bidh biodag rèidh an anail a’ giùlan puing cho math ri falt sìoda.
Thistledown and silver thorn, needle sharp the leaf has torn. Razor smooth the breath will bear a point as fine as silken hair.

Nis casts Bless on the party as quickly as she is able.
