Welcome ybn and arch
Re: OOC Banter
Hey everyone,
Just dropping a line to say I might to go a little less free-form going forward regarding (random) encounters, encounter distance, wilderness travel procedures, etc. Hope everyone is ok with it.
The intent of this game, apart from enjoying ourselves with an Adventure!, is to try out the S&W ruleset, and see how well it works out, so I need to start using some of its rules
You already noticed the pregens for the new characters are different, and there is a very simple reason for that - the initial pregens I presented were created for the Labyrinth Lord retroclone, and some things are different in that ruleset, namely ability bonuses. Not gonna let that hold us down. Living and learning.

Re: OOC Banter
Can the original pregens get more equipment? The new ones have huge lists, others like not much at all.
Re: OOC Banter
That all sounds fine with me.Edeldhur wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 9:13 pm Hey everyone,

Re: OOC Banter
Yes and yes of course! I will add the gear to the original pregen thread - viewtopic.php?p=705943#p705943
Done! Let me know if that was what you were looking for.
Re: OOC Banter
THanks. I added it to notes on his sheet for now but when I have a few more minutes I will get it into his inventory. More than I was expecting, now I need some pack goats.
Re: OOC Banter
Nothing as old school as needing pack animals hahaha.
And apologies for the delay in moving us forward gang - this week was particularly busy at work, and also my wife had to travel unexpectedly - meaning I am single Dad for the whole week
Re: OOC Banter
No problem. Real life first.
Re: OOC Banter
I had noted that I was going to cure myself in the morning before be left, is that still possible to have been completed? (I will need a ruling on that before I post an action)
Re: OOC Banter
Yep, that is fine gurusql.
Re: OOC Banter
Ok, so Combat rules update - after some investigation:
(I will be adding this in the Combat thread)
If you are declaring a spell to be cast you cannot move.
You can move and melee.
You can move and fire one shot if your missile weapon has a RoF of 2 or more.

Re: OOC Banter
Just to jot down some relevant things regarding this Combat:
1. Magic is powerful!
2. Regarding missile weapons outdoors - the range from the rulebook (e.g 50' for shortbow and 70' for longbow) is effectively tripled (which equals approximately to 50 yards and 70 yards respectively)
3. Missile weapons can be used up to a maximum of double the range, with a -2 penalty (e.g 100 yards for shortbow and 140 yards for longbow)
4. Missile weapon Rate of Fire: longbow and shortbow have RoF 2. I will go with a common ruling for S&W games which allows one shot during the Movement and Missile Fire phase, and another AFTER the Melee Combat and Spells phase (refer to viewtopic.php?t=13628)
5. Spell range is also effectively tripled outdoors (but not the area of effect)
6. And yes, going forward I m going with the phased combat from S&W. I hope it will not bog us down too much, but I really want to give it a try. In a nutshell, if none of the sides is surprised:
- Players declare Spells, then I decide on bad guys spells
- Roll initiative (assume players win)
- Players move and missile fire, then bad guys move and missile fire
- Players Melee and Spells resolution, then bad guys Melee and Spells resolution
- Second missile shots for weapons with RoF 2+ happen here
- Round complete, back to Spell Declaration
I know it is clunky for PbP, but lets give it a try. If it bogs us down too much I will change it.

Re: OOC Banter
The phased combat round is how OD&D and Holmes work and it is just fine in PBP (I can't remember right now if it is a different order but that doesn't mater). It is also how Hyperborea works which is the system I run at the table for a D&D type game and it works just fine. Just take everyone's actions like normal and when you but your summary post together for the round you play it out in the correct order. In the event something happens that needs some adjustment you can deal with it then, but it will be less common than you think.
Re: OOC Banter
There's a reason I have 8 AC, 4 HP, and the slowest leveling!
Re: OOC Banter
Sorry everyone for not posting. I have been having a host of medical issues to deal with; nothing drastic but seeing a couple of different specialists and all the tests that entails. I'm trying to catch up now and will post as soon as I can.
Re: OOC Banter
That's rough. Hope things improve quickly!
