But Shadows (ooc and questions Vl)
Re: But Shadows (ooc and questions Vl)
A couple questions for our DM:
1. You wrote that we should add 1 ration. Is that 1 ration total, or 1 ration each?
2. What is the approximate distance between Cruloc and the sound of the footfall? Does the sound of footfalls stop, as if the person who made them has stopped moving?

Hi Yrkoon,
1 ration total.
It's within earshot of a footfall. For even the keen-eared Cimmerian, if can't be more than 30 feet.
The sound stops for a second or two. Does Cruloc wait longer than that to hear what happens next?

Hi jemmus,
Torix is trying to slip away unnoticed. From Unearthed Arcana:
"Barbarians can hide in natural surroundings that are familiar to the barbarian as a thief of three levels higher would hide in shadows."
This means Torix has a 43% chance. I'll rule that the bear is very distracted by the salmon run, which will double your chances.
Please roll an 86 or lower on d100, and link the roll in this thread. Good luck!

Quick - without looking at Unearthed Arcana or the Monster Manual - can a barbarian outrun a bear?
Re: But Shadows (ooc and questions Vl)
They can climb trees and scale cliffs!
A bear's movement according to the AD&D Monster Manual is 12." The very fastest, if I remember 1e rules right. (I cheated and took a peek before posting Torix's action). But RP-wise, it seems like something a forest wilderness Pict would know. A brown bear is a fearsome MM beast, and not only for its speed....

Hi,
A very minor point but going forward, I would prefer if players didn't look up monsters in the MM during play please.
If you ever have any questions about what your PC would know, please ask in the OOC thread. Thanks!

Re: But Shadows (ooc and questions Vl)
Got it, sorry about that. It's been years since I've played a PC as high as 4th level, and I was curious about the comparative power.

Does Torix have an options for saving his barbarian Pictish hide? For example are their any cliffs or high cliffs he can climb? I assume there are plenty of trees he can climb.

Hi jemmus,
There are no cliffs here at the bottom of the green valley. There are trees.
The savage Pict is an expert outdoorsman and is familiar with bears. All these thoughts go through his mind at once:
-Bears can climb trees.
-Torix has surprised the bear, startling it. Right now, the bear sees him as a threat and may attack at any moment.
-Torix may be able to outrun the bear (Barbarian base movement is 15") but once Torix flees, the bear will recognize him as prey and would likely give chase to kill and eat him.
-There may be other bears nearby, also drawn to the salmon run (as you saw in the Monster Manual, the Number Appearing can be greater than 1). If Torix flees, they may also recognize him as prey and react accordingly.
-If Torix does not bolt, he should make himself appear as large as possible, back away slowly and non-threateningly, and speak calmly in low tones. High pitched vocalizations will identify Torix as prey. With luck, the bear has previously encountered Picts and learned that Men are not prey. On the other hand, if it has encountered other (Hyborian) Men before, it may have learned that Men are prey. If so, this strategy may fail.
-If the bear is a mother and Torix is standing between it and her cubs, Torix is in terrible danger.

Thanks!
(A side detail in case anyone may be interested. Torix's Pictish is the language of Yap, a little group of islands in Micronesia where I was a Peace Corps Volunteer a long time ago).

Hi folks! I'm back. Life has gotten simpler for me- I retired last fall, and my days are a lot more flexible. I'll try to stay on top of what's happening here.

Belated congratulations on your retirement! Glad you're back!
Re: But Shadows (ooc and questions Vl)
Can Cruloc give/toss Zahra's magic sword to her? What would that cost him in terms of movement/action in this first round?
