Re: Expedition - Orrin/Logging - 21 April, 1 VC
Naila loads up her sling and fires it at the nearest orc....
sling under 40 ft [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15; dmg [1d4] = 3
EDIT: oops that should be +3 to attack (+2 from dex and +1 close range)

Re: Expedition - Orrin/Logging - 21 April, 1 VC
Round Five:
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 3
The party finally seems to be taking control of the situation. Remus and Lug inch closer to the melee to maximize the accuracy of their attacks, while Naila rushes full-speed toward the orcs in order to make the best use of her sling (only medium range still, but you get the shot off). Remus' bolt flies wide, but thankfully misses Jem as well, while Lug's arrow and the wizardess' sling stone both find their marks. Lug's powerful arrow piles through its target once again, leaving a trail of blood across the grass a dozen feet long, the orc sprawling across it and his unconscious comrades as part of a macabre composition of death. Naila's stone throw, less powerful, nonetheless bloodies its target's face and likely fractures its skull, though it clings tenaciously to consciousness.
Jem lays hands on himself and calls down the might of Pelor. Some, but not all, of his wounds close magically. At almost the same time, Orrin declares his fight with the dog decisively finished, thrusting his blade down through the creature's neck. The situation at the entrance to the structure seems much better than it did a moment ago, but with more orcs on the way it is hard to know where the party stands.
Jem Healing [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4
The orcs arrayed around the cleric continue their assault, slashing away with their short-bladed swords as they grunt in their guttural tongue to one another. Jem deflects the blows from the front, going so far as to jab at the shaft of the bolt sticking out of one's shoulder with the handle of his flail as it advances, causing the creature to double over in waves of new pain as the blow connects. The young cleric is out in the open, surrounded by enemies, and it looks as though he will be overwhelmed--but the might of Pelor seems to be protecting him, at least for now, and his armor deflects all of the blows, even those coming at him from behind.
Orcs vs. Jem Front [1d20] = 1, [1d20] = 8, [1d20] = 14
Orcs vs. Jem behind [1d20+2] = 9+2 = 11, [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4
In Orcish:
More grunts and cries of alarm come from inside the structure. It seems that more of the monsters will be joining the fight next round.
Jem's Enemies:
Orc 1: 2 HP (hit by Remus' arrow previously, misses next round's action due to pain)
Orc 4: 2 HP (asleep)
Orc 5: 6 HP (asleep)
Orc 6: 6 HP (asleep)

Re: Expedition - Orrin/Logging - 21 April, 1 VC
Having finally dispensed with the dog and seeing his comrade Jem beset on literally all sides, Orrin rushes to his aid, coming up behind the Orc nearest him and cleaving his longsword across the orcs shoulders, yelling as he does so.
"Get away from my priest, assholes!"
{Longsword} Attack: [1d20 +1] = 17+1 = 18, Damage: [1d8+1] = 4+1 = 5
I'm not touching that 4... Let it ride.

Re: Expedition - Orrin/Logging - 21 April, 1 VC
Round Six:
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 2
The party continues to take charge--Orrin rushes toward the mass of orcs surrounding Jem, sword drawn, while Naila edges further ahead to get into optimal sling-firing range. Her stone strikes true, finishing off the orc with the welt on his head before he can make another attack against the cleric. He falls over, blood streaming from his ears. Remus' bolt drives into the chest of the orc Jem had debilitated the round before, not allowing him a chance to recover his wits.
Lug, more and more eager to watch the handiwork of his new weapon, takes a few more running steps forward as he draws back, unfortunately catching his foot on an upthrust rock and sprawling to the ground. The drawn arrow snaps beneath him as he somersaults on to his back, and the bow falls from his fingers--but thankfully not far.
Orrin smashes into the few remaining orcs around Jem, slashing one of them across the back. The blow is significant, and the orc cries out in pain, but it is not enough to finish the creature off. Jem throws his weight against the creature, hoping to finish it off with his flail, but his attack goes wide as he adjusts at the last moment to avoid the onrushing bulk of his dwarf companion. The flail slips from his fingers and goes flying into the grass beyond the ring of his attackers.
Jem vs. Orc [1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3, damage [1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10
Five more orcs barrel out of the opening, swarming forward toward Orrin who has placed himself in plain view of the entrance. Only the leader is able to make an attack, the rest arraying themselves roughly around the dwarf to be well-positioned to attack or cut off escape. The leader's sword-stroke is clumsy and over-hasty, however, and the dwarf easily parries it.
Orc vs. Orrin [1d20] = 2, damage [1d6] = 5
The three orcs still standing around Jem continue their assault, and one manages to draw blood with its wicked, curve-bladed sword. It utters a blood-curdling cry of triumph as the weapon strikes home, heartening those creatures still standing. The young cleric remains stony-faced but grunts in obvious pain.
Orcs vs Jem [1d20] = 18, [1d20] = 17, [1d20] = 11
Damage vs. Jem [1d6] = 4
For now, the entrance appears to be clear, but the drums can still be heard pounding.
Jem's Enemies:
Orc 4: 2 HP (asleep)
Orc 5: 6 HP (asleep)
Orc 6: 6 HP (asleep)
Orc 7: 2 HP
Orc 8: 1 HP (wounded by Orrin)

Orrin makes a desperate slash at the orcs surrounding him, but is unable to make contact.
{Longsword} Attack: [1d20 +1] = 7+1 = 8, Damage: [1d8+1] = 4+1 = 5
Someone throw an initiative. I think Orrin is about to either find religion or meet his maker.

Re: Expedition - Orrin/Logging - 21 April, 1 VC
Round Seven:
Don't you hate it when combats go this many rounds and you still have a dozen enemies left on the field?
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 1
One of the orcs surrounding Orrin is struck by a bolt from Sera squarely in the shoulder. It staggers a bit but is undeterred from its goal of finishing off the next of the intruders. Meanwhile, Naila's sling stone flies well wide of the orc she targeted, close to the entrance, and strikes the left buttock of one of the orcs clustered near Jem. The damage is not enough to finish the creature off, but it does significantly injure it. The creature takes its round to kick at one of the orcs sleeping on the ground around Jem and Adrienne, rousing it from its slumber as the remainder of them attack Jem and Orrin.
Random Target (9 is Jem) [1d9] = 1
Lug moves forward and rights himself, recovering his bow and drawing forth another arrow to continue his barrage next round.
Jem, having lost possession of his flail, draws forth his mace and lays about him, but the massed orcs have the advantage and he is unable to penetrate their defenses.
Jem vs. Orc [1d20+2] = 8+2 = 10, damage [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4
One of the orcs slashes viciously downward with its sword from the side, nearly severing Jem's flailing arm with a bestial roar that mingles with the cleric's blood-curdling scream as he collapses to the ground. (max damage of 6 for natural 20) The second orc slaps the first with the flat side of his sword along the side of his head in congratulations, and the first retaliates angrily, snatching the weapon from his grasp and tossing it to one side with a snarl.
Orcs vs Jem [1d20] = 20, [1d20] = 1, damage [1d6] = 1, [1d6] = 3
The monsters around Orrin are even better positioned, with three in front of him and two behind, and seeing Jem fall they decide now is the time to turn the tide of battle against the intruders. Orrin meets them head-on, disarming one mid-strike and neatly ducking under the blows from the two others in front of him as they attack.
Orcs vs. Orrin front [1d20] = 1, [1d20] = 2, [1d20] = 2
This maneuver puts him out of range of the descending blades of the two coming in from behind, one of which is nursing a fresh crossbow-wound, but he finds himself now hemmed in on all sides by the full mass of eight upright orcs, with a ninth rising groggily to its feet. Meanwhile, the drums in the earth continue to beat...
Orrin's Foes:
Orc 4: 2 HP (asleep)
Orc 5: 6 HP (asleep)
Orc 6: 6 HP (rising from slumber)
Orc 7: 1 HP (wounded by sling stone)
Orc 8: 1 HP (wounded by Orrin, disarmed)
Orc 9: 8 HP
Orc 12: 5 HP (disarmed)
Orc 13: 7 HP
Orc 14: 5 HP
Orc 15: 2 HP (hit by xbow this round)
Orc 16: 5 HP
Jem : Injured and bleeding horribly at Orrin's feet
Adrienne: Injured but stable at Orrin's feet

Both Naila and Remus have drifted close enough that they could reach Jem for stabilizing this round if they want to expose themselves to attack by the orc horde.

With a snarl and spit Remus drops Sera and rushes into the grouping of orcs, drawing his hand axe and calling out to the closest other member, Naila, "Get the wounded outta there! I'll cover ya!"
When he gets to the orcs he begins swinging, hoping to catch one of the orcs unaware as they are focused on Orrin.
