Our illustrious DM might offer his ruling here, but I'm pretty sure if your character is within the light radius of the lantern (30'), he will have no dark vision. (I believe this is commonly referred to as "Zero Dark Thirty", but I may have mixed up my terms somewhere...)
The LL rules indicate that, in any case...

So he'd have to be more than 30' ahead of the rest of the group or 30' behind the group,
and not looking forward towards the light, in order to have use of his dark vision.
