SGT Acme

Marvin only has time to admire Wade's aim for a moment before he sees the incoming grenade. At first, he wonders how Wade managed to put a spin on the grenade and make it retreat, but quickly realizes the reality as he finds himself moving backward at an alarming rate.

His eyes lock with Dutch's and he reaches out instinctively to him. The entire scene plays in slow motion before him, his view as if from above.

Late morning of 8 February, 1942; Mouth of a cave near the top of a cliff above Agloloma Bay, near 'Point Quinuan', one of 'The Points', South West Coast of the Bataan Peninsula on the island of Luzon, Philippines

As SGT Acme finds himself starting to fall off the cliff, his eyes lock with 'Dutch' Van Horn's and the strapping Pennsylvania farm boy reaches out and snags the veteran Marine NCO's arm and pulls him back to safety. Marvin gasps for breath for a long few moments as Charlie Van Horn closes his eyes and sighs in relief and it's a long moment before either of them speaks.....Acme is the first to do so, asking with a curious tone in his voice, "So.....who's Jamie?"

A similar scene, though not QUITE as dramatic occurs on the other side of the cave mouth as Radioman 3rd Class 'Mediocre' Fred Roker and PFC Teddy Gomez reach down and grab Marine Private First Class Wade MacGyver as he starts to slip and slide over the edge of the cliff and drag him back to safety before the pile of men all collapse to the ground, sighing in relief that they were all still among the living....

The last member of the band was still in the cave, prone on the ground, doing his best to keep a steady aim despite the incessant ringing in his ears in case any of the Japanese were still alive....but after a long few moments it became obvious they were not ambulatory at any rate. Rifleman Gurung shakily got to his feet, worked the bolt of his SMLE to chamber another round and warily went deeper into the cave. He was relieved to only find the smashed bodies of the Japanese; MacGyver's grenade toss had been right on target.....

As the 'super squad' eventually gathered their wits and came out of the cave, they found that many of thier fellows had been doing the same thing.....hunting down tenacious Japanese soldiers defending their caves to thier last breath. By noon, they were on their way back, a "victory" having been achieved and they were in relatively high spirits....

Unfortunately, those high spirits were not to last long as the situation in the Philippines got ever worse.....

Soon all of the Allied troops were either besieged on Corregidor Island, or essentially falling back and back into the Jungles to fight as guerrillas as it became painful obvious the U.S. was not going to be sending in any kind of rescue effort. At the end of February, all of the 'Talents' were ordered to make a strange night gathering at the docks at midnight....

As the various Marines, Sailors and 1 Gurkha stood around in the dark, bleary-eyed and confused, they suddenly all stood straight and at attention as a gaggle of 'brass' (high ranking officers) including General Douglas MacArthur, the overall Commander in Chief of all Allied forces in the Philippines. The slim man in the wrinkled khaki uniform came over to the assembled group of half-a-dozen Talents and after looking over all of them with his sharp, intelligent yet cold brown eyes, he nodded once and said, "At ease".

"Well, it seems you fellas are getting a ticket home to the States. The SSO (Special Service Office; i.e. the Agency that builds teams of "Talents") has been informed of your actions in the Battle of the Points and has pulled some strings with the President and the War Department to have you all sent to the United States by whatever means available for immediate training as a 'Special Services Team'. Therefore, the Submarine USS Dragonfish has been ordered to rendezvous at the docks here on Corregidor at 0100 hours to receive you and transport you to Brisbane, Australia, where you will then be given the highest priority passage on the first Flights to Pearl Harbor where representatives of the SSO will meet you."

"I wanted to say that I personally am deeply appreciative of the efforts you all have made at the Battle of the Five Points and the Philippine Campaign overall and to wish you the best of luck in all future operations against our enemies. Godspeed and happy hunting". With that MacArthur hands a sealed manilla envelope to the highest ranking member of the group, SGT Marvin Acme and hands off the half-dozen young Talents to a combination of junior Navy, Marine and Army officers.

In short order the six young Talents have gathered what little gear they still have, bid farewell to thier fellows and soon are boarding the cramped quarters of a Submarine, which quickly departs into the black waters of the Philippine night and off towards Australia.....

......................................ALMOST 4 MONTHS LATER.......................................

SSO Office located at U.S. Naval Base at San Diego, California, Mid Afternoon of 1 June, 1942

In a nondescript building that nonetheless drew the attention of almost everyone who walked past it due to the sign reading "Special Services Office: Pacific Branch" and the heavy guard detail; a group of 8 Talents were led into a small conference room by the senior SSO Officer, Commander Jay Marsden (USN) and he quickly made sure everyone had a comfortable seat.

The 8 men at the Table all had a moment to reflect on what had happened to each of them since the War broke out and since they had first manifested their Talents. After the SSO pulled strings to get them all out of whatever battle they had been a part of, they had all been routed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and there that manila envelope that MacArthur had given them led to each being promoted a rank and all received a Bronze Star for the valor they had shown. More importantly to most of them, they had also each been given a month's leave with orders to report to Naval Base San Diego in the second week of March. After each had done so, they all had reported to San Diego, and there they began training for their new military profession as part of a Special Services Team (SST).

The Team of 8 Talents had spent the better part of 3 months working and training hard together and they were all very comfortable and familiar with each other and all had grown quite capable in being able to utilize their various 'Talents' to best effect on 'special' missions as the first members of Special Services Team (SST) Four. The three previously formed SSTs were all in operation in Europe and North Africa, they would be the first to launch missions in the Pacific. The group consisted of the 6 Talents who had seen action in the Philippines and a pair of Sailors who had seen action at Balikpapan and in the Atlantic respectively.

Ensign Tom Boyd had been a junior Gunnery Officer on the Destroyer USS John D. Ford and during the battle when his ship was attacking Japanese Transports, he had noticed that one of the Imperial ships was firing back at them. As the shells started to land near and on the Destroyer, he suddenly found himself creating a spherical rain cloud to help give the ship some cover.....or at least, a 30 foot section of it centered on himself anyway. Shortly thereafter, he was nicknamed 'Rain Squall', sent to the SSO and promoted to LTJG.

Boyd knew next to NOTHING about running around with rifles, submachine guns, grenades and blowing stuff up from a close-up and personal vantage point as opposed to in a large Gun Turret from thousands of yards away. Luckily for the rest of the Talents, he was both a fast learner and more than happy to let the more experienced 'Leathernecks' to be the 'REAL' leaders in the field....

The other member of the team was a former Cook or in Navy Talk, a 'Commisaryman 3rd Class' named Carl Franklin, who had been serving on the USS Chesapeake, a Destroyer that had been escorting a convoy of merchantmen on the way to Britain when she had been torpedoed by a U-boat in early February. Without knowing how, Franklin suddenly began racing to the wounded and just by laying his hands on them, he could help heal some of their wounds. Soon, it became obvious that 'Doc' was a Talent with the power to heal others and despite some backlash, the SSO quickly decided to integrate the black sailor with the other Talents coming into the Agency and soon enough, 'Dock' Franklin was training hard right alongside the other members of SST 4....

Now, at long last tt would appear that CDR Marsden was about to tell them what that first mission would be after all that training.....
