Naruthirdor is going to throw a torch at the oil on the wall, after the troll advances past it... so (fingers crossed) nobody in his party gets burned. Then hopefully he can do something with the smoke afterwards. Would that be possible this round? I don't want to, this round, roll the die roller's d20 and get the rare (1 in 100??) good roll and not have it count. Figure if it isn't this round, then it's likely the next round at the rate we are going.

Sorry to be more specific, where in relation to the cave troll is our oil slick? Naruthirdor is tracking as to when the troll is past it, or right next to it, to throw his torch.

As per DMG p. 64...

Folco's missed oil flask: Direction: [1d8] = 5. Distance: [1d6] = 6

6 feet short left.
The floor under Elbenwin is soaked in flammable oil. :(

Folks: Do we maybe want to make our stand down that dead-end tunnel? Or would that just be a good place to die?

If they have access to the outside (which they probably have another exit cave anyway... but whatever :) ) then they can get reinforcements from other friendlies. That's what I'd worry about... endless incursions of bad guys coming at us. We've been there, done that in the other game. :D

i don;t think we know if any of the tunnels are dead ends. he is just displaying how far down the tunnel we can see.

The one going directly south dead ends as far as we know. Folco checked it out.

If we do stand and fight, i think we keep our backs to the exit tunnel in case we need to make a spectacular advance to the rear.

By the light of Naruthirdor's torch, any hero at the crossroads can see that the southern tunnel is a dead end.

I'm with rredmond on this one- the dead-end tunnel gives us a secure fighting position. Keeping the exit at our backs just invites another flanking attack.
For what it's worth, I've been in games where the PC's held off a LOT of goblins from a dead-end like this. Admitted, every game is different, but....

And, speaking as a sometimes GM, I would guarantee these orcs have other connected exits to come at us from outside.

Gonna be nasty either way. My concern with the dead end is the possibility of a secret door that Folco missed.

My concern with the dead end is the fire and oil that seems to be on its way. Having said that, I still think it's the right move, so we don't get flanked on three sides.

I wasn't actually advocating going down the dead end... where there's no escape... Pretty sure no matter what we do we'll be surrounded, so maybe (while tactically I fear it) this is our least worst option.
So I'm game if that's what the party wants to do. No guts, no glory, and hopefully no TPK!

If (and only if) you are making a stand in the dead end, please let me know:

Which PCs will be closest to the crossroads and able to engage the enemy in melee combat?

Who will be directly behind them? And behind them?

And how far from the crossroads is your front line?

Thanks.
