The personal communicator is one of the more popular off-world tech items.

"Small, ear-piece-type short range communicators with long-life batteries. Weight is negligible, and the communicators are undetectable to the casual observer. Range: 10 km across open areas, less than 1000 meters underwater. Price: Cr100 each."

There are several specialty shops which sell items like communicators. I will assume you will separately buy your own comm. unit; everyone going in at once would probably cause you all to "come to the attention of people in high(er) places." Like those cops. Unless you really want another chat with them.

Chiree can't wear one, but he will manage, using his own talents.

And now, everyone please roll 2d6 and post your results.
Yes, going individually to different shops sounds like a good idea.

Jrec

[2d6] = 5

"Communicators. Great idea", says Jrec. "What do you think about other equipment?" He makes the fingers-and-thumb gesture of a pistol, on the off-chance the room is bugged. "Whoever's running this operation down there isn't just using harsh language".

Giotto, while you are out shopping, you overhear two older men talking about shipping topics. In the great tradition of "no shit, there I was," one is talking about the naval research station:

Yeah, we got this job to make a delivery to that research station. I sure thought they would eventually close that place down, after they closed down the naval base, but something is still going on there. The place was iced in, so we had to make the delivery to this strange underwater dock, inside a large globe. There are a bunch of those globes attached to a central stem. I guess the laboratories are in the globes. Strange place. He shakes his head, and moves on to a different topic.

Everyone is successful in finding a comm unit without raising any suspicions. Describe any other shopping you do and what you buy. See the Comment/ooc thread for what is available at tech level 5.

Job hunt: Ringar got a lead on a warehouse job. more later

Hello, back again. It is rather warm here, in sunny NorCal, and the garden needed attention.
I am going to move time forward a bit.

Meanwhile, back at the fort... er, town...

You are all back from shopping and job hunting, get together in Ringal's room, and decide to go out for food. Chiree insisted on coming along, but as soon as you leave the room, you no longer see him. There is a cheap cafe down the street, where the food at least edible. The staff know nothing about your new friend, or the run-in with the cops yesterday, so it is probably safe.

Is Jrec going to find the submersible captain and play gambling games with him? Will the group go along for moral support and backup if things go awry?

Actions?

December is eager to go along and witness the game.

How did the practice games go? This will determine ho much of his savings December is willing to put in to support this risky scheme.

Jrec

"A slap-up meal at the greasy spoon wouldn't be a bad idea." Jrec agrees. "Put a bit of a lining on the stomach".

Jrec is certainly ready to go along and see the captain, either flushed with confidence at his success in the practice games, or flushed with confidence that he got all the bad luck out of his system in the practice games.

Do we have any of the equipment he suggested buying?

"People tend to get a bit too attached to money that isn't theirs anymore. They can get upset and do silly things".

Jrec, your practice sessions went well. If the anti had been higher, you would have cleaned them out.

So you feel confident playing against Capt. Mirakru. The next morning, you research where to find the captain.

Everyone: Suggest to me the name of the establishment where he plays, and what kind of place it is. I will pick the best combination. :D

In long ago Traveller games, the place we usually started/wound up in is Madam Woo's House of Pain, Bar and Grill. In later games, one of the characters worked at a Happy Orange Surprise franchise.

The Emergency Protocol
This used to be an office space for the customs service, and still has the low ceilings and boxy, utilitarian lines one would expect from such a space. Little care has been put into changing the uninspired look—a coat of dark paint, a mirror behind the bar, and holographic film depicting tourist-brochure landscapes stuck over the few windows. The space is filled with repurposed office furniture grouped into pods devoted to games of chance. The Emergency Protocol is not a place you go to have a fun time around the table with your friends. This is where you go for serious, desperate gambling. It is not uncommon to find games that would frowned on in most establishments, like mumbelty-peg and stabberscotch.

Ringar

Yeah, a bit of grub would hit the spot after a hard day at the docks.

I would name Heukseok Market as the place, thinly veiled Blade Runnner reference.

I think we will go with the Emergency Protocol as the location of the card/gambling game. That is a great description.

I fleshed out Cpt. Enli Mirakru a bit:

Local ex-Navy Commander (wet navy)
age 46
a bit battered
addicted to gambling (candidate for Gamblers Anon.)
down on his luck and is behind in the payments on his submersible, the "Direma"

He can often be found at the Emergency Protocol, trying to win enough to make his ship payment. The establishment does serve drinks, but does not have a kitchen. There are several nearby greasy spoon restaurants that will deliver there, including the local equivalent of pizza.

December will do some research to find out what Mirakru owes on the submersible, and to whom.

Sorry again... but went to a Shakespeare play last night. :D

December- You ask around, and find out the following: (giving this to you free, to keep going)

Mirakru owes Cr. 100,000 still on the sub; his monthly payments are Cr 1500, plus maintenance, fuel, and repairs. He purchased it from (Ms.) Iikush Gaarirra, of the Gaarirra Used Ship Sales Co., for Cr 300,000. The submersible had been privately owned by a younger son of one of the local "families," who had not done much maintenance on the interior (sort of trashed it). So Mirakru bought it in "needs some work" condition. (As with many used vehicle dealers, he paid an inflated price.)

Jrec

Jrec listens to the intel that December has learned about Captain Mikaru. "1500 a month eh? Well, once he's in the hole, he should be desperate to sign up with us. Especially if the local heavies are looking to break his knees because he's missed a payment."

He shuffles some cards as he continues to practice.

"Of course," he nods over at their newly acquired weapons. "We could just meet him on the dock and invite him to take us for a ride".

December: "His desperate straits certainly work in our advantage. We could just approach him as a hire—he obviously needs the income. But, as you say, if we can help him dig his hole a little deeper, it may increase his enthusiasm and perhaps his discretion."

Madox minutely cringes at the suggestion of physically intimidating the sub captain. "Let Jrec do what he can. As desperate as the Captain sounds we should be able to win our way to passage."

And onward to the card game... what sort of card game is it? Poker, or?

This will take a few rolls from Jrec, and encouragement from the rest of the group, including Chiree, who is there, but "not there." Remember to watch your backs, just in case.
