Newton stays close to Gardo, attacking the creature with his axe when it comes within range.

Feargus is getting antsy at the top of the stairs down to the cellar. When the guard nearby calls down, he nearly bolts down the stairs to help. Instead, his eyes fall to Goshawk's form and then flick back up to the sky, watching for a return of the beast.

Telemachus throws the oil flask at the creature and follows it with the torch.

Casfrea attacks if she sees enough space to do so in the room.

Gardo

"What?! I asked you about the riches. Now you attack me? I would like to know what riches!" The warrior moves to prevent the creature from flying up out of the basement and goes to subdue it (Knockout).

Round Nine

The creature lumbers forward, a bizarre mixture of crawling and flying, seemingly intent on trying to burst through the line of adventurers and up out of the cellar. Gardo and Newton stand true, though, and it is unable to pass! Gardo is unable to pierce the creature's defenses, but Newton drives his axe deep into its hide, causing foul ichor to spray from the wound. The creature is definitely looking hurt. Telemachus finds that, given the angle, the low ceiling of the cellar, and the wall his companions form that he is unable to get a clear shot on the creature, but Casfrea bounds down the ladder and takes her place in line, driving her blade in as well, but the berserker notes that her massive blade seems to inflict less damage than Newton's axe.

Gardo

Annoyed with the situation, Gardo strikes the creature again. "You should have told me about the riches instead of challenging me."

Round Ten

"Foolish mortal!," Gardo hears in his head, "there are no riches! I was merely trying to buy some time!" Again, the creature tries to shoulder its way through the line of adventurers, but it is unable to break through. Gardo's blade traces an arc through the air, and the creature's head falls from its thorax. A beat later, the body itself collapses to the floor with a sickening squelch.

"What's going on down there?" calls out Tonbet Ma, "I've sent one of my men to go rouse the Watch, and they should be here shortly!"

Tonbet Ma

The Watch sergeant descends the stairs. "Hold on a second, mister. There'll be no burning of this here body, at least not we've had a chance to look at it. This is what we call 'evidence' in the business." He looks down at the corpse. "Sure is an ugly sonofabitch. Looks . . . otherworldly, almost. Like a creature spawned from pure Chaos. I'm sure the Watch captain, hell, maybe even the mayor will want to have a word with you. Why don't you folks hang out until my captain gets here, and then we'll figure out what to do."

Outside, the leaden sky is tinged with the faintest of rosy pink hues as the rising sun tries to penetrate the cloud layers. More lights are flickering in windows, and a small crowd is gathering; townsfolk craning their necks, blowing on their fingers for warmth. Off in the distance the sound of marching boots can be heard.

Newton

"Of course, officer, I was just concerned. You hear stories of monstrosities like this somehow coming back from the dead."

Newton will keep a close eye on the corpse while they wait for the Captain to arrive.

Newton takes his eyes off the corpse for just one second, and it comes to life and sucks the blood from his body with a sickly slurping sound!

Interestingly, the corpse's flesh and skin seems to corrupt rather quickly; within a few minutes it has darkened to an ugly bruise color, with blisters and pustules rising here and there, almost as though it is beginning to liquify or slough off. There are no signs of it returning to life.

Gardo

"You had a chance, stupid Chaos spawn." Gardo spits on the corpse.

"Hey, Tonbet. Your Nightstalker is dead now. After the Captain gets here, how about you help us find our way in this maze of a town back to our inn, buy us a round, and help us off to bed. Maybe even make sure that we are not summoned to appear somewhere until after the noon meal, we've been up most of the night trying to trick this thing into attacking us."

The sergeant throws his hands into the air. "That's above my pay grade," he says, "the Captain will be here shortly, and she'll sort everything out."

Sure enough, it's another couple of minutes before the Captain -- and older, grizzled woman with greying hair -- arrives with a squad in tow. "What's this I hear about a street battle?" she demands, surveying the scene quickly, taking in the body of Goshawk, the gawking townsfolk, and the remaining adventurers. "What do you have to say for yourselves, strangers?"

Newton replies to the Captain

"Good...um...morning Captain. My friends and I are the Company of the Scarlet Warriors. We arrived yesterday and heard of the problems you were having with a murderous Night Stalker. We managed to lure the foul creature out of hiding and killed it, although it has cost us the life of one of our own"
Newton will try to pitch his voice loud enough to be heard by the townsfolk, unless that means shouting or being really obvious

Captain Cynge Akar

"Hmmm. Very well. If this is indeed true it is welcome news, although I am troubled that you seemed to have alerted no one in a position of authority as to your plans. This is a town of Law, good sir, and regardless of your good intentions we cannot have armed vigilantes wandering the streets! However, if this indeed the creature known as the 'Nightstalker', perhaps we can overlook your . . . enthusiasm. I would suggest you return to your lodgings, and I will report to my superiors. We will want to talk again: do not leave, or you will be immediately suspect!" She pauses and looks around. "What would you like us to do with your dead? There is a temple here, dedicated to C'thronun, the Weight of the Mountains. We can take the deceased there, unless you know he would prefer other arrangements."

Gardo

"Well, it was a decision and plan to deal with the creature, borne out of our cups shortly after we arrived here. We didn't mean any offense, just wanted to help out and protect everyone. If it can be arranged, could you have someone show us the way back to our inn? First time here in town and not really certain where things are. As for leaving, I wouldn't worry about that. We have not slept all night and I aim to close my eyes and not open them again until no earlier than lunch. Then sleep again until dinner."

Captain Cynge Akar

"Very well." She orders two of her squad to escort the adventurers back to the Folly.
Let me know if there's anything else you want to do here before I move things forward. Pulpatoon, if you'd like Aldus to take his leave now this would be a good time to kind of fade him to black.

Feargus

On the walk back, Feargus will engage the captain in conversation. "The idea to go out was mine. The reason the boy died is on me. I will carry that and whatever punishment there is to bear. I am also happy to cover the boy's funeral arrangements. I will be checking in with the temple in the morning."

Fourthmonth, Seventhday

The adventurers return to Leoval's Folly and fall into deep sleep, which is interrupted far too soon by knocks on their respective doors. By the light coming in through the window it looks to be early afternoon. "Arise!" they hear, "for you are being summoned to speak with the Baroness's seneschal, and your fate determined!"

Gardo

Grumbling at having to get up and not having anything to eat at the moment, he begrudgingly follows. "Hey, Telemachus or Newton. One of you guys going to speak for us? I know I may mess things up if I have to be the one talking."
