Schillachi

"Mangy critters. Don't get too close, that fungus looks quite an infection."

The tiefling prefers to keep them at length and thus waves his hand to fire off a Chill Touch cantrip. A spectral hand begins to throttle one of the imps.

Schillachi: Chill Touch cantrip: +5 to hit: [1d20+5] = 14+5 = 19 necrotic damage[1d8] = 7

Middle imp of trio. Cannot regain hp until start of my next turn. If reduced to 0 hp, Schillachi gains +4 temp hp.

Initiative Order
  • 21: Luawn
  • 18: Thalian
  • 10: Fungus Imp
  • 8: Schillachi
  • 3: Alessa

Round 1
Luawn, already in range with his light crossbow, takes aim at the fungus imp-like creature furthest to his side of the trail and sends a bolt in its direction. The fighter curses as he watches his quarrel clip a red lump of moss off the creatures shoulder but continue past without inflicting any physical harm. "Steady everyone, don't let them double team anyone," he cautions as he carefully drops his crossbow and readies his sword and shield.

"Gah! I guess this is it!" Thalian emotes, clearly startled by the sinister appearance of these imp-like creatures. As he advances to join the front ranks, the cleric keeps himself calm by thinking back to his education and training, then readies a retaliatory strike as he braces himself for the eventual attack.

The attack which happens almost immediately!

The impish creatures scuttle forward, making direct routes to engage with Feylynn and Thalian. Before the elf has a chance to react, her adversary lashes out with it's long, jagged claws, raking her left forearm; then lunges into her form, face first, clamping its jaws about her side, gnawing on her flesh. Only, she feels no pain. The accompanying imp attempts the same attack routine, but the better armored fighter fends the creature off with his shield.

The final imp doesn't fully engage; instead, it stops roughly 10-feet in front of Luawn and, points a clawed finger at the fighter, and repeatedly curls its index finger back towards itself in a 'come here' gesture.

Thalian, awaiting the arrival of the creatures, waves his mace wildly in their direction.

"Don't get too close," Schillachi calls out from behind the rest of the group. "That fungus looks quite an infection." The tiefling, perfectly content to keep his distance, mutters the word "chill" as he waves his hand, creating a ghostly, skeletal hand that reaches out and grasps the middle imp -- and the hand appears to pass right through it as it squeezes. Still, the creature appears to reel and shudder at the touch, and utters a pained yelp in a strange tongue.

Alessa, while still relatively safe behind the front ranks, allows her mind to race as she studies the creatures, attempting to identify them. The claw and bite attacks are so common they don't reveal anything, but their unusual appearance trigger a memory -- Miremal; savage, degenerate fey creatures most commonly found in swamps... which makes their appearance here, in the middle of the forest a bit odd.

Seizing control of her awareness, Alessa plants her staff on the floor and draws a few arcane symbols in the air with her free hand, her finger leaving a faint light-trail lingering in front of her until it's thrust towards the furthest imp. With a command word of draconic power a bolt of fire shoots from the outstretch finger and crashes into the chosen foe.

"Miremals!" she calls to her companions. "I... I believe we are strong enough to defeat them!

Thalian Goldehart

Finding himself grinning in response to Alessa's newfound confidence, Thalian swings his mace at the imp before him with a little more focus guiding his hand. Sparing a moment to look to his right, he is dismayed to see the ferociousness of the imp's attack on Feylynn. "Get back you vile creature!"
Mace Hit [1d20] = 11 Mace damage [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6 Attack is on green dot imp. Shout is directed towards blue dot imp, for what it's worth :)

Schillachi

continues to grasp the situation in hand, literally. He senses that Feylynn is down and determines to wipe the grin off the face of the imp attacking her with some dextrously prestidigitation of his own. The tiefling makes the ethereal hand squeeze the throat of the impudent imp a bit more fiercely, twisting his hand in a snapping throttling motion.

Schillachi: Chill Touch cantrip: +5 to hit: [1d20+5] = 18+5 = 23 necrotic damage[1d8] = 8 attack on blue dot this time.

Round 2
From behind them, the group hears Alessa call out what they assume is the name of the interesting creatures they're being attacked by: "Miremal."

Keeping his focus, Luawn takes a mighty swing with his long sword, powering through the miremal in front of Thalian. While young, the fighter is still well-enough trained to realize his blade doesn't seem to make contact at the expected time; almost as if it cut through several inches of skin before the contact seemed to offered any resistance, and the contact his blade did make was solid, not giving like would be expected cutting through flesh.

Thalian sends his mace crashing into the miremal standing before him, the same one Luawn just issued some serious damage to moments earlier, and feels the same... lack of immediate contact. His mace, when it did find purchase, didn't seem to strike until it had passed through its skin. Still, the creature collapses. "Get back you vile creature!" he yells, turning to look at the creature still pestering Feylynn, and still perplexed at the peculiarity of his oddly successful strike.

The miremal's press their attacks against those in front of them. Feylynn, again, appearing to be lashed by a pair of long, jagged claws and a vicious bite -- but still not feeling any pain as a result of the attacks. Thalian, too, appears to be bitten by the fungus-fiend, and cringes at the anticipation of the accompanying pain... which fails to arrive.

Schillachi repeats the word "chill" and the practiced hand gesture which causes an ethereal hand to stream towards the throat of the impudent imp directly in front of Feylynn -- only, once again, the grip closes on itself, passing right through the neck of the creature without appearing to grasp an actual physical form.

Seizing control of her awareness, Alessa plants her staff on the floor and draws a few arcane symbols in the air with her free hand, her finger leaving a faint light-trail lingering in front of her. She utters a few arcane syllables, unleashing a bolt of fire from her outstretched finger that crashes into the miremal that just advanced on Luawn.

Schillachi

is a bit confused as to the reactions of the imps and his friends. He anticipated howls of pain and being 'outnumbered by a greater foe' the imps turning to run or hide? He tries to study the prone form of Feylynn as the imp continues to gash her, is she breathing? bleeding out? asleep? Perhaps too far away it seems he perceives nothing unusual. Schillachi skill check vs perception. [1d20] = 2

and continues to twist his ethereal ghostly ice-cold wrist more tightly around the neck of the scrawny blue dotted critter. Schillachi: Chill Touch cantrip: +5 to hit: [1d20+5] = 6+5 = 11 necrotic damage[1d8] = 7

"Ha! Yes, take that you foul fiends!" the young witch exclaims excitedly as Thalian fells one of the imps, before shirking back in embarrassment. Her next bolt of fire seeks the same target, though her voice is barely above a whisper as she casts it.

Thalian Goldehart

Thalian has had enough of watching the strange imp have its way with his comrade. Seeking to shove the creature off of Feylynn, the cleric raises his shield up and charges at the creature, hopefully plowing right into it and knocking it back. With an intimidating shout, he lunges forth!
As per shove action requirements, here is my roll against Strength (Athletics). Strength Athletics check against 14+2 [1d20] = 8

Luawn

Luawn cuts off the approaching imp (orange) so it can't get around him to the casters in the rear and attacks with his sword.

Long Sword [1d20+5] = 17+5 = 22 to hit [1d8+3] = 2+3 = 5 damage

Local Trickster
The group steels themselves for another wave of attacks from the creepy miremal creatures when --

Poof!

-- the forms of their fungus-filled adversaries disappear!

Completely.

Any perceived damage taken, or dealt, fades from existence as if it never happened.

At the ground level, a rustling sound of underbrush being disturbed is heard, a bit forward of your current position and off to the right of the trail. The sound is brief, and fleeting, before being followed by the sound of rustling leaves overhead, as if the source of this sound is taking flight. A few branches above your heads accompany the rustling leaves sounds as they bend forward, then sling back into place as if someone -- or something -- disturbed them by brushing past them, heading away, confirming the airborne nature of the retreating sound.
Wilben.jpg
Wilben.jpg (225.4 KiB) Viewed 973 times
As the group nears the original location where the sound was heard, Alessa stops moving and begins to focus intently, closing her eyes. She sniffs the air, and after a moment, nods her head and a smile crosses her face.
Note: Faanku, I used the roll you supplied for your Fire Bolt attack for this instead.
"It's Wilben," she volunteers, sharing the name of the town's accomplished wizard, under whom she's studied for years. "He's quite accomplished in the illusionary arts," she continues, building her case. "And, do you smell that? That is definitely the scent of his pipe tobacco."

The others, once it's pointed out, are able to make out the fresh smelling tobacco with a hint of mint.

"He must be playing jokes on us," she continues. "I know he has mastered the art of turning things invisible, and he also owns a broom of flying, which... " She stops, shifting her gaze skyward, in the direction of the rustling branches overhead, not needing to point out the obvious.

---

Apologies for all the confusion. It's tricky dealing with illusions. At least now, in the event something "odd" happens again in the future, you'll have this experience to potentially tip you off and prompt you for a roll to successfully disbelieve what you're seeing... or not. ;)

Anyway....

You still have roughly 6.5 hours of sunlight. Do you want to push forward immediately, spend some time searching the area, something else?

Feylynn, enjoying being out of town and in the wilderness tells the group, “I think we should keep moving. We are on a timeline I believe.”

Alessa Deepbough

The young witch doesn't reply but instead keeps frowning at the sky, lost deep inside her own thoughts. She continues on with the others in a distracted way.

Thalian Goldehart

The young cleric is confused at first, seeing the imps disappear so suddenly, but when Alessa spoke up about illusions and wizardry, Thalian nods his head sagely, acting as if he knew all along... Those who watch this display can easily see through his act, knowing fully well that he does not know how to lie all that well. More often than not, his words are honest and without hidden intent, something people have come to appreciate about him.

"Whew! That was as good of a warm-up as any." Thalian is glad that he had the opportunity to test how things would turn out in a group situation. Everyone stuck to the formation, but he couldn't help but feel a bit worried about Feylynn. Looking over to her direction to make sure the wounds were indeed non-existent, he asks her how she is fairing, now that the group has resumed their travel. "You froze for a bit there. Everything alright?"
Even a child that receives one bit of praise has the ability to excel in a single talent, and those who receive regular encouragement can feel confidence, achieve success, and become leading members of society. Because they don’t believe they are worthless, they don’t need to raise a fist and have vengeance against fate or the world at large… ~Inspector Lunge

Schillachi huffs.

"Wizard tricks indeed. Sent to weary us and distract us no doubt. I expect the mayor will have other hindrances arranged."

He cautions the group against using daily spells or skills as we might be short handed in a real fight.

'Tutting' under his breath but trying to impress the group with the imagery of his chilling hand twisting scrotum and neck of the fake imps. "My, my. I even impressed myself".

“I’m not sure what happened but I can tell you now that wizards aren’t my favorite people if that is indeed what just happened” . Feylynn lets out an ironic little laugh. “If you want to know the truth, I always thought that I could never be conned. I guess I just was! I am still very young and have a lot to learn about this world” She smirks and anger turns to curiosity, looking forward to what else this quest has in store for her. Looking at Alessa apologetically for the statement about wizards and glimpsing at Schillachi in case he was offended.

Sorry guys wasn’t in the initiative order and the fight started with the elf not having a chance to react...was a bit worried what our master of the dungeon had planned for my character ;)

Alessa Deepbough

"It was definitely an unkind trick, I would not harbour resentment towards you should you direct your own at Wilbern. Though I confess a small part of me is relieved that we were in no true danger.

Her eyes dart between those that took the frontlines. "N-not that I doubted your capacity to safeguard us, nor indeed wish to detract in any manner from the bravery, courage, and impressive skill at arms you so valiantly displayed in our defence! You were very... brave and courageous... yes..."
