Thanks for the advice everyone. I've stuck with my original idea for a Yama King character.
personalpariah wrote: Also, something to keep in mind with combat in SWN: IT IS DEADLY FOR YOUR CHARACTER. This isn't like Dungeons and Dragons where combat is like a sport. SWN is based on the Old School style where combat is war, and things can go south very quickly!
Intellectually, I knew this was the case, but then I rolled a 2 (minus one) for my character's HP.
Antman9 wrote: Perhaps we each have an “Inner Drive” and maybe a “Purpose” for doing what we’re doing. Then we could figure out how that gels with each other and flush out individual stories accordingly? I also like the idea of each of us having one or more “Habits” or “Personality Traits.” I think that would be fun.
I like this idea a lot. I will get started on some of these.

Wei Xuan 魏玄
He's the party's lawyer. Xuan uses his legal knowledge to help the party out if there's trouble with the authorities. If we're the kind of party that does mercenary work, he negotiates contracts. He's motivated more by a Daoist/Confucian ideology than money. He helps the party because he believes they do more good than harm (probably?) and the party gives him an opportunity to travel the galaxy where he can learn about other human cultures.

Inner Drive: To promote harmony between individuals.
Purpose: To work within legal systems to protect the powerless from the depredations of the powerful, to punish those actors who disrupt cosmic harmony through corruption, lawlessness and bad-faith agreements.
Habits: Before his mother passed the civil service examination, the Wei family was very poor and he was exposed to unhealthy amounts of his homeworld's toxic atmosphere over a long period of time. As such, he is frequently short of breath and will unconsciously lean against walls or other solid objects for support.
Xuan enjoys deploying hopelessly obscure aphorisms which are virtually meaningless outside the literati-bureacratic circles where he was educated. Related: He writes terrible poetry.
Personality Traits: Xuan is exceedingly fastidious. He is kind, if not especially warm. Having spent his youth in an isolated society, he is curious about other cultures and ways of life and seeks to understand them on their own terms.

Nice, thanks for the feedback! I finished all the mechanical aspects of the character and I'll make some macros for skills and the like later. Specific backstory stuff I might hold off on until the rest of the world and party is more fleshed out.

How is everyone else's character concept coming along?

Very nearly done, I keep flip-flopping between taking Biopsionics or not because I know someone said they wanted to be a medic.
To generate a character’s attributes, roll 3d6 six times and assign the results in order to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. You may then change one attribute of your choice to 14 if you wish to ensure that your new adventurer is gifted in at least one way.
From a glance at your sheet it seems you may have missed this.

Great catch! I didn't quite assign the results in order of STR, DEX, etc., do you think it would still be okay?

The person who was talking about playing a doctor hasn't posted at all on the campaign forum... I'm not really sure what the proper etiquette is when it comes to waiting on people.

Aye, you are supposed to assign in order unless you choose the array.
Did you get any attribute increases from your Background rolls? If not I don't think your stats are at all gamebreaking or anything, so even with a 14 Con it shouldn't matter.

No, I just did 3 1d8 rolls for skills. I'll get rid of that 5 until instructed otherwise.

I am going forward with the Integrated VI character. Its name is Ubex. Still haven't decided if I want Ubex to be a hovercycle or gravcar. They both have interesting and different personality and background implications. Also, I think it will be a little hard to load a gravcar into a spaceship, so I am leaning towards hovercycle at the moment.
So, all in all, I am nearly finished with character creation. Just have a few more choices to make, and then I'll post an update.

Tatiana is one of the newer members of the crew, joining initially as a passenger to leave her homeworld of Kham and later signing on when her psionic powers were made apparent. She has the rare talent to identify and resist other psychics, as well as a potent command of telekinesis; handy skills to have out in the black.
Having had a strict upbringing and shouldered heavy expectations for her entire life, Tatiana is almost glad to be free of those shackles and to be able to do as she pleases.

Does this apply even if you roll a stat that is already higher than 14?

Nikolai was once a promising medical student. He had trouble dealing with the stress of medical school and began using illicit drugs to improve his performance. His habit quickly outgrew his ability to obtain his drugs of choice, and he was dismissed from school when security found him breaking into a pharmaceutical locker.

He has survived since then by taking jobs in low tech settlements and with crews of dubious ethics. At some of these, his habit interfered with his ability to practice, and he left with an angry mob at his heels. He lives in the shadows, trying to avoid the notice of local authorities and anyone from his past looking for revenge.

If you rolled your stats in order instead of taking and assigning the array, you can swap any one attribute to 14, whether it's higher or lower. Not sure why you'd swap a 17 down to a 14, but you are entirely free to do so should you wish.

I need to give my background a final revision before I post it. But here is my bare bones char sheet.
Image to follow soon.
I chose to use the Attribute Array (14, 12, 11, 10, 9, 7) method and assign as I wanted.

Couple of questions:

1) What is the expected posting frequency? (I can probably swing daily if that's what everyone wants)

2) Do you have a preferred posting format for character posts. Such as always include the character name first, then actions, then dialog, etc.? Some GM's have preferences.

3) Looks like Episode 1 is up and Liaozhai already responded. Form the post I'm assuming we just jump in and go, right? (I'm down with that plan if so. Wasn't sure if there was a plan to bring folks in at specific times or if we're just going to let the story and characters dictate the direction, which I'm totally cool with. I like Sandbox games)

I'll have the rest of Udex's background written up soon. I already worked out its personality and history, just ran out of time. Posting a reply in the game thread soon!

In case anyone else is interested in this. Had to look it up because the character pic I wanted to use was huge. You can play with the % to get the pic the size you want.

I used this: <img src='IMAGE LINK HERE></img>
You could also use this: <img src="IMAGE LINK HERE" width="400" height="300" alt="">

prbably a few other options as well.

I concur Liaozhai. I've been wanting to play SWN for a long while now. I'm stoked. Going to finish up my background this morning and get that in my character sheet.
