Building a Character in D&D Beyond

Home
  1. Start here: Character Builder;
  2. Select the 'Standard' option;
  3. Give your character a name (this can be changed later);
  4. Disable all the 'Sources'
    • Homebrew Content
    • Critical Role Content
    • Playtest Content
    • Magic: The Gathering Content
    • Eberron Content
  5. Select "Milestone" in the 'Advancement Type' drop-down and confirm;
  6. Finally, select "Manual" in the 'Hit Point Type' drop-down and confirm;
  7. Leaving all other options the same, press the blue 'Next' button to the right of your name.
(Note: Any of the above can be changed later, but to at least get you started with what I think will be the final options, please follow the above.)
Pro Tip:
It is sometimes easier to select your background (step 4) before your race (step 1). You can do this by pressing the "4. Description" menu option in the horizontal menu bar at the top.

Many times, skills that your background give you (which are specific) are also available when you select your class (where you have more options). It's easier to select these specific background skills first; when you reach the same step when customizing your class, skills selected by your background will show the background name next to them, alerting you that you do not need to take them again.
Otherwise, stepping through the options will have you perform the following:

1. Race
  1. Unless (or until) you've requested a race from a different source, please select "Player's Handbook" from the 'Filter Race Source(s)' drop-down;
  2. Select your race, and sub-race as necessary, the click the green 'Choose Race' button to finalize the decision at this point;
    • Note: This option, like most things, can be changed at any time.
  3. If your race requires any customization, make those selections here;
  4. Press the 'Blue' next button to continue.
2. Class
  1. Pick a class;
  2. Press 'Add Class' on the modal window to confirm your class;
  3. Customize any class features, as needed;
  4. Press the 'Blue' next button to continue.

3. Ability Scores
  1. Select "Point Buy" from the 'Choose a Generation Method' drop-down;
  2. After you've settled upon your desired ability scores, press the 'Blue' next button to continue.

4. Description
  1. Choose a background from the 'Background' drop-down;
  2. Make selections for any background options, as needed;
  3. Please also explore and make selections/populate the necessary values in the following fields:
    • Character Details
      • Alignment
      • Lifestyle
    • Physical Characteristics
      • Gender
      • Age
      • Height
      • Weight
    • Personal Characteristics
      • Personality Traits,
      • Ideals
      • Bonds
      • Flaws
    • Feel free to add any details in the 'Notes' section as well.
  4. Finally, press the 'Blue' next button to continue once completed.

5. Equipment
  1. When given a choice between 'Equipment' or 'Gold' in the "Starting Equipment" section, choose the 'Equipment' option;
  2. Make any selections based upon your class and background;
  3. Press the red 'Add Equipment' option once the above selections have been made;
  4. You won't start with a lot of gold, but you can always purchase additional equipment in the 'Add Items' section;
  5. Press 'Next,' and you're essentially done.

You're now able to go back in and make changes to any previously made selections.
